Eight days into Ukraine’s invasion of Russia’s Kursk Oblast, the Ukrainian invasion corps—some or all of five mechanized brigades, three air assault brigades and several independent battalions—has fully occupied its first major settlement: the town of Sudzha.

But the Ukrainians didn’t just capture Sudzha with its pre-invasion population of 5,100—they also captured many of the Russian troops who were defending the town.

Ukrainian special forces took 102 Russian prisoners as Sudzha fell on Wednesday. “This is the largest one-time ‘catch’ since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine,” according to an Estonian analyst who posts under WarTranslated.

How those Russians from the 488th Motor Rifle Regiment became prisoners speaks volumes about the main dynamics of the ongoing battle in Kursk.

When Ukrainian forces rolled into Kursk on Aug. 6, the first Russian troops they encountered weren’t the Russian military’s best professional troops. Instead, they were lightly equipped, ambivalently led conscripts.

It was official Russian policy that conscripts—men between the ages of 18 and 30 who performed a year of mandatory military service—would strictly serve in second-line military roles. They wouldn’t see combat.

That changed in Kursk, as the Ukrainian advance overtook units and parts of units that were never supposed to be on the front line. There have been several instances of large groups of bewildered and terrified Russian conscripts, some of whom only fired a few rifle rounds during their cursory military training, surrendering to battle-hardened Ukrainian troops.  .  .  .

The "cleansing" of the Russian Ministry of Defense, which began after the dismissal of Sergei Shoigu, may continue with a new series of arrests of high-ranking security officials who failed the defense of the Kursk region, where Ukrainian troops have been in charge for more than a week.

The consequence of what is happening near Kursk, where Moscow has lost control over the territory of 1000 square kilometers and 82 settlements, may be criminal cases against representatives of the military and security authorities, Verstka reports, citing sources in the government and parliament. The persecution may also affect civilian officials who allowed this situation, the publication's interlocutors said.

From the invasion of the Armed Forces of Ukraine - the largest since the beginning of the war against Ukraine - President Vladimir Putin has already fallen into disgrace with the head of the General Staff, Valery Gerasimov, who has been leading the Russian group in Ukraine since January 2023. According to Bloomberg, Gerasimov knew about Kyiv's plans, but did not inform Putin. The incident could negatively affect Gerasimov's career, a source of The Moscow Times warned earlier.

For 14 years, Gerasimov, who heads the General Staff, was not included in the number of participants in a meeting at the Ministry of Defense on August 15, where the head of the department, Andrei Belousov, was presented with a plan of additional measures for the defense of the Kursk region. Since August 9, the head of the FSB, Alexander Bortnikov, has been coordinating the actions of law enforcement agencies in the region: it is he who leads the counter-terrorist operation, the regime of which was announced in the Kursk, Belgorod and Bryansk regions.

Since the beginning of May, at least five generals have been arrested in the Ministry of Defense, each of whom has been charged with corruption articles. Among them are the head of the Main Directorate of Personnel, Lieutenant General Yuri Kuznetsov, Deputy Head of the Main Directorate of Innovative Development, Major General Vladimir Shesterov, former commander of the 58th Army, Major General Ivan Popov, Head of the Main Directorate of Communications (GUS) of the Russian Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Vadim Shamarin, Head of the Main Directorate of Personnel of the Ministry of Defense, Lieutenant General Yuri Kuznetsov. In April, Shoigu's key deputy, Timur Ivanov, was detained and arrested in the case of a billion-dollar bribe.

I very much agree that Putin is right that it is foolish to negotiate with someone like Putin.  ****slapping

I've also heard a number of people now discussing what China is observing from Russia's inability to secure its border with Ukraine when Russia is at war with Ukraine.

Add to this information that so many Russian units in the Far East were completely removed to fight in Ukraine and that much of the Far East is virtually undefended then the time is ripe for China to invade and retake their Siberian territories from the Russian invaders.

Examples that I can find of Russian forces entirely removed to Ukraine:

39th Mechanized Brigade (Khomutovo, Sakhalin) - removed to Donbas with the 68th Army Corps HQ subsumed into 22nd Army Corps HQ based in Simferopol, Ukraine.

Almost all of the 35th Army (Belogorsk, Amur) has been relocated to Ukraine but dispersed as replacements to bolster units in theatre. 165th Artillery Brigade might be operating cohesively under the 1st Army Corps in Donetsk.

120th Artillery Brigade (Yurga, Kemerovo) has been in Ukraine for over two years now and they may have been obliterated or disbanded and subsumed into other groups.

37th Mechanized Brigade (Kyakhta, Buryatia on the Mongolian border) can be viewed on Google Maps and their facilities in Kyakhta are all but abandoned. All of the armored vehicles are gone and only a few trucks are left. The helicopter base is abandoned.

I can keep going but this is the same story in almost all of the Far East. Even the 5th Army that ostensibly protects the naval base at Vladivostok is clearly gutted.

China is surely seeing this since anyone can see this same thing just by looking at Google Maps.

Irkutsk, the area where the Tu-22M3 ("Backfire") crashed, is far out of Ukraine's reach by air or ground forces. The likely causes are that the best maintained Tu-22Ms and best maintenance personnel got moved near to Ukraine, and this plane was in less than great condition, due to age and/or less than excellent maintenance. Sabotage is possible, of course.

Comparatively speaking, Ukraine has increased the area it controls and the much larger territory in which it marauds fairly freely pretty rapidly. Not bad for a country who, 2 weeks ago, Ukraine-Haters were claiming was on it last legs, incapable of a significant offensive operation. Though not committed as a division, Ukrainian forces in the Kursk offensive are about division strength, and Russia is experiencing the consequences of arrogantly/foolishly stripping combat-capable forces out of an "inactive" border area. Somehow Russia failed to notice a brigade plus other units being built up and staged near Kursk.

None of this was ever supposed to happen.

This is very far from a 3 day war. Ukraine could have done this from the beginning if Biden had not tied their hands with political threats and embargos. From what we see today, without the Biden admin interference, the war could have ended months ago.

Biden did not want "victory" on either side. The American view of war is always stalemate ... never actual victory. The same policy can be seen in Israel with Hamas.
