What do I think....

Well the term "Poop or get off the pot" would apply to me.... I don't know what to think. I am lukewarm... No love for Russia (understatement), no love for blowing money when Europe spends all it's dime on giving welfare programs instead of defense.

We have staunch positions on both sides presented here and I am still on the dang pot... I kinda would like Russia to bleed out fighting this war... I don't want it having the sea areas... and I sadly don't seem to mind a million(s) of lives lost in the process, partly because I have no real affinity connection to Ukrainians either, though they don't seem to be godless monsters like Russia. Yet they aren't exactly beacons of morality either (not sure where my utopia of such is, perhaps I live in a small world).

Trump can say "peace, peace" all he wants, but I am not sure he actually wants anything more than to wash the mess off his shoes and be done with it. Peace under Russian terms ain't exactly leaving anyone with a pleasant taste in their mouth. Debt on Americans without something in return also seems like we are funding war without any spoils, might as well wage the war. Euroweiners in their socialist 6 month wait time "free" dental plans not having stick in the fire to fight communism, with the BBC actively coddling it for decades...

Meanwhile I sit on my pot.... while someone suspects I am being rightfully called some B-name in Ukrainian... while I debate whether I heard them right or not.

In short it is a mess. And it is going to have consequences far beyond the battlefield.

I've heard that from multiple sources. An error on Zelenskyy's part, as he was demanding something that cannot be given. At the same time, it was positioning Trump to have a national interest in Ukraine that he could defend to his supporters. Now things are rapidly splitting apart across the planet.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent revealed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky repeatedly backed off on the prospect of signing a minerals and economic agreement after stating he would do so on numerous occasions. This, according to Bessent and additional reports from the administration, led President Trump to adopt a “three strikes and you’re out” approach to dealing with the Ukrainian leader.

According to several lawmakers, including fierce Ukraine backer Lindsey Graham (R-SC), congressional leaders had hoped that Zelensky would sign the minerals deal on Friday. President Trump has demanded backpay for the hundreds-of-billions of dollars sent to Ukraine in the form of military and humanitarian aid, noting that European countries have made agreements that would see their investments repaid.

Trump has stated that a minerals deal — which would see roughly 50 percent of profits from the sector going to the U.S. until the loans are repaid — is an essential first step to a security agreement. The president has stated that he is open to the prospect of security guarantees and peacekeepers for Ukraine, though the minerals deal must be secured first.

Trump cannot sign something that puts American troops on the ground in Ukraine. It is simple as that. As long as those are the only terms Zelenskyy is willing to accept, he's going to get nothing.

By having a mineral deal with the US, Trump was positioning the US's national interest, justifying his actions there for many that simply want to cut and run. Zelenskyy was unable to recognize this - and it will cost him, and potentially his country dearly.

Trump's mineral deal was for minerals in eastern Ukraine. That was Trump's door into the country maintaining our national interest. It didn't really matter what the terms were at this point. It greatly improved the chances of Russians not being there. So yes, Zelenskyy screwed up and he doubled down on it. So either he steps aside for the good of his country or they'll get to bet their future on the Europeans.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is holding a Ukraine summit in London today with EU leaders, following two phone calls with President Trump.

According to the outline Starmer proposed on BBC News, following the disastrous Zelenskyy meeting in the White House, the British PM called President Trump and also Emmanuel Macron.  According to his statements, Starmer told Trump he would work with Macron +2 unidentified countries (a “coalition of the willing”), to organize an EU security force for a Ukraine ceasefire; then the group will require Trump to provide a U.S. troop “backstop” as an insurance policy.

Starmer completely ignores the NATO provocations against Russia that preceded the military operation by Vladimir Putin, instead blaming only the aggression of Putin for the expansion of NATO in Europe.

Clear Kremlin propaganda, right there, with that false premise, which in any measure does NOT justify Russia's invasion of Ukraine and all the atrocities that occurred afterward.

There were no provocations, except for Russia's neighboring countries clamoring for membership because they rightfully feared Vladimir Putin.  It is a defensive alliance after all, and there are a lot of steps for getting in, including a unanimous vote of all member countries.  Putin just uses that as a flimsy pretext for bullying and attacking his neighbors.

My reaction to this is the same as it has been for awhile. President Trump and his team knew, or strongly suspected, that this would go off the rails. If strong signals were picked up confirming a derailment was coming, Vice President Vance was primed to push back, which he did - and it did. President Trump knew full well a media and political firestorm would follow.  That firestorm would ultimately, per the calculation, result in a deal getting done and perhaps the removal of Zelenskyy.

The whole moment was rightly anticipated.
