I assert that "Pass Behind" was wrong and that the order should have been "HOLD and then pass behind".

And none of that would have been an issue if they had been at the 200' or below altitude limit for that location.

The army does 3 types of check rides. Instrument, annual, and night vision goggles. This was a combined annual and night vision goggle check ride. We believe the helicopter was like the helicopter crew was likely wearing night vision goggles throughout the flight. Given the nature of the flight.

So collision occurred at like 344ft and the helicopter was climbing at 9degrees?

And none of that would have been an issue if they had been at the 200' or below altitude limit for that location.

The FAA today announced a rule change where either helicopters have to hold to allow jets to land or the jets yield to the helicopters. No more crossing flight paths with less than 1000 feet of separation...as it is everywhere else in US airspace.

A recent deadly collision over Washington, D.C. involving an Army helicopter has brought sudden national scrutiny to the service and its missions over the nation’s capital, but a master Army aviator told Breitbart News that they had been at risk for years.

In fact, the aviator said, the Army was so strapped for experienced pilots that up through 2023 it was sending its most junior pilots fresh out of flight school to fly these specialized missions. At one point, an estimated 40 percent of the pilots assigned to these missions, which can include evacuating leaders in the event of an attack, were on their first assignment, the aviator said.

“D.C. is some of the most challenging and restricted airspace in the country if not the world, so you can’t just send the most junior pilots there, which they don’t anymore. We said, ‘Enough is enough. We cannot take any more new pilots, because the people that we fly are the nation’s most senior leaders, and you need experienced pilots to deal with that and to deal in this airspace,'” the aviator, who wished to speak on background.

“I want to say 40 percent of the formation was first assignment. That’s — that’s huge. The problem with that is because of who we fly and the airspace. When you have these very junior groups, we got to get these people trained, get them out there so they can start flying missions,” the aviator said, adding that instructor pilots are flying their “butts off, trying to get these people just qualified and trained.”

“So a new person comes out of flight school, they’re basically qualified in the Black Hawk. Now you have to get them qualified in the unit’s mission. So in D.C., you got to get them familiar with all the helicopter routes, all the landing zones, the airspace, all the different places [they] go. That’s the structure,” the aviator said. “There’s a lot that goes into it. And so when you, when you have a W-1, or a lieutenant fresh out of flight school, they’re struggling just to keep the spinny side up, you know? And then now, now I’m throwing all this air and it’s challenging.”

The aviator said the directive to stop sending brand new pilots came around the summer of 2023 under Army Lt. Gen. Allan Pepin, who was then in command of Joint Task Force-National Capital Region and U.S. Army Military District of Washington. Pepin, who is commander of U.S. Army North Command, is an aviator himself.

“So he had a much better understanding. Right now it’s an infantryman, and before the aviator was an infantryman,” the aviator said. “We messaged that to the right people, and then we were able to get a hold of [Human Resources Command] and kind of have a handshake deal where no more — no more brand new pilots, just because of the airspace that we operate in.”

The aviator, who personally knew the Black Hawk crew members involved in the deadly January 29 collision, did not directly attribute it to the experience gap, but disagreed with news reports describing the crew was “highly experienced.” The instructor pilot, Chief Warrant Officer 2 Andrew Eaves, had just under 1,000 flying hours, but the co-pilot, who was doing her annual flight evaluation at the time, Captain Rebecca Lobach, had just under 500 flying hours.

Families of the victims of January’s plane crash near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) are pursuing a potential lawsuit against the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the U.S. Army, their legal representatives told the Daily Caller.

The victims’ families are exploring legal action following the fatal Jan. 29 midair collision between American Airlines Flight 5342 and a U.S. Army Sikorsky UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter over the Potomac River which killed 67 people.

The Regan Zambri Long law firm, who are representing two families who had loved ones perish in the crash, are demanding “a thorough investigation into aviation safety protocols and accountability,” according to a statement.

Negligence on behalf of the FAA, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) or the pilots of either the American Airlines flight or the Army helicopter are among possible elements a lawyer told the Daily Caller could have caused the crash, resulting in wrongful death.

Patrick Regan, president and senior partner of Regan Zambri Long, told the Caller that his team is monitoring the NTSB’s investigation and filing notices under the Federal Torts Claim Act practically “every day.” He added that they are pressuring the NTSB to complete its investigation in a reasonable and timely manner to provide closure for the victims’ families.

The @nytimes story on the January DC plane crash hides its takeaway until the last sentences: the lady helicopter pilot ignored multiple warnings from her right seat about altitude (and his directly telling her to turn away) and flew straight into a passenger jet.
The end. Ugh.
Yes, there were other factors that allowed her to screw up and kill herself and almost 70 other people, but she was the one flying the Black Hawk. And she repeatedly ignored warnings.

A checkride is a formal evaluation conducted by a designated pilot examiner (who usually is also a flight instructor) to assess a pilot’s skills, knowledge, and decision-making abilities to determine if they meet the requirements to obtain or retain a specific pilot certificate or rating (such as a pilot's license or night rating).

The pilot under evaluation is considered the pilot-in-command during a checkride. During a checkride, the examiner would only intervene during serious or life threatening errors to ensure safety. When the pilot under evaluation willfully ignores the safety warnings or interventions of the examiner, they will almost certainly fail the checkride. The incident would also be recorded in the evaluation report, and the pilot would have to undergo remedial training and likely be subject to an investigation by the licensing authority.

To put a more real face on this, a relative by marriage's husband was on the flight. His young widow has two little kids, none of whom were on the plane, but they found enough of their Dad to identify what remains they recovered. Such collisions, the impact with the water, tidal currents, etc., are not conducive to recovery or identification, and the remains are not always intact.

So, I will publicly offer my prayers for this young lady, her children, and all the victims and families and friends of those lost in this incident.

That is just one of the many horror show moments, and I also offer my prayers for the divers who were engaged in recovery efforts. That affects you.

The accident was the first fatal crash of a U.S. commercial airliner in 16 years  and the deadliest since 2001. So nerves were especially tense a month later, on the morning of March 1, when more than a dozen planes inbound for Reagan experienced similar warnings. As they were drawing near the airport, following the course of the Potomac River, TCAS audio alarms unexpectedly went off: “Traffic, traffic!” or “Descend, descend!” The pilots responded as they were trained to do, quickly putting their aircraft into a dive. But just as quickly, the flight crews realized that nothing was there. Visibility was good, and there was nothing to be seen ahead of them in the sky. The tower also saw nothing, either visually or on radar. The oncoming planes weren’t real, but some kind of electronic ghost.  ...

It’s not that unusual for TCAS systems to issue spurious warnings. A receiver might pick up its own outgoing radio signal reflected off a building or vehicle, for instance. But for so many planes to receive the same warning in the same place for hours on end was deeply weird. As Robert Sumwalt, the former chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board, told CBS News, “I’ve never heard of something like this.” ...

My read is she willfully ignored instructions but did not intend to endanger anyone.

That's my take, too. That degree of self mutilation at a moment of pique, perhaps, inadvertently. Intentionally, and taking a host of others along, would be the provenance of a more deeply troubled mind than someone just feeling pissy who would not accept constructive criticism.

Autistics with OCD make exceptional pilots. If one of them is your pilot then you can rest assured that every preflight check and checklist was done and then checked again.

The commercial pilots were not the ones with issues. It is being speculated that the person flying the helicopter may have had a problem.

After the most recent revelations came out, my retired U.S. Army Chinook pilot friend said the guy evaluating the pilot should have taken the controls from her when she was so clearly at the wrong altitude, and that he would have done so in that situation. He said only 2 or 3 times in his career did he ever have to do that. One time, he said, was with a female pilot who was so enthralled with viewing a volcano from the air, she nearly crashed the helicopter into the mountain.

People are ignoring too she was on her fifth check ride after failing four previous ones.    If DoD would go ask the real Aviators in the unit they would hear the same stores people I know there told me.  She would have never been in the cockpit let alone ever been sent to fight school.

In coroporate America there are certain categories of "protected classes" you can't confront or they run to HR crying discrimination.  It's easier to just let them and the organization fail under the weight of its own nonsense.

Fact is, autistic people are not capable of normal communication.  They lack empathy along with other normal human behaviors.   IMHO, anyone on the spectrum should not be in a position of authority or control others.  PERIOD!!!  They make life miserable if you work for such a person.

I am certain she was a DEI hire.  And yes, HR has made it nearly impossible to criticize or properly evaluate certain categories of people.  The total insanity of the Biden Administration was the foundation for this accident. 

Why is anyone having a check flight at night in an air space that is over populated like the metro Washington DC area?  Makes no sense.  Total incompetence by many people.  No such flight should be allowed in that air space.

Here's some news: Everyone is autistic to some degree or another. Basic narcissism is an expression of autism and from what I have seen of the internet it is wide spread.

I'm ASD-1 and while emotional communication is not my forte the realm of in-flight communications is perfect for me. It's unexcited and unemotional.

Yes, I don't always have empathy for other people but I also don't have misplaced empathy for other people. Hamas, for example, elicits zero f*cks from me when they get slaughtered by Israel.

In the past I have managed kitchens and you're right that the people who worked with me found me absolutely inflexible over topics such as sanitation and food safety. No, it is not 'okay' if you leave the fresh fish out for forty minutes prior to cooking it.  *****rollingeyes*****

Now do you want people like me making your food or are you okay letting someone slide on food safety when it's your food being prepared?
