When the Soviet union imploded in 1991, Russia signed a peace treaty with the newly-independent Ukraine, promising to recognize its sovereignty and borders - including Crimea. In return, Ukraine gave up their nukes. Russia freely signed that treaty, nobody put a gun to their head.

And, the Treaty was still in effect on Feb. 24, 2022, when Putin invaded without any provocation.

The founder of a pro-Russian militia group in eastern Ukraine, described by authorities in Kyiv as a “criminal mastermind”, has died following a bombing in central Moscow, according to Russian state media.

Armen Sarkisyan died Monday at a Moscow hospital from injuries sustained in an explosion in an upmarket residential complex in the capital city, TASS quoted the medical services as saying. The Russian Investigative Committee later confirmed Sarkisyan’s death, stating that “despite the assistance provided, one of the victims died in a medical facility.”

Sarkisyan, also known by nickname “Armen Gorlovsky” after Horlivka (Gorlovka in Russian) the eastern Ukrainian town he is from, founded the separatist Arbat Battalion fighting in the region. Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence described him as a “well-known criminal mastermind” who became the “supervisor” of prisons across Russia and occupied territories of Ukraine in November 2022.  .  .  .

Washington imposed fresh sanctions on Jan. 10 targeting Russia's oil supply chain, causing tanker freight rates to soar as some buyers and ports in China and India steered clear of sanctioned ships.

Offers for March Russian ESPO Blend crude exported from the Pacific port of Kozmino jumped to premiums of $3-$5 a barrel to ICE Brent on a delivered ex-ship basis (DES) to China after freight rates for an Aframax tanker on the route surged by several million dollars, three traders familiar with the grade said.

Prior to the January sanctions, robust winter demand and firming prices for rival grades from Iran sent spot premiums for ESPO Blend crude to China rising to close to $2 a barrel, the highest since the start of the Ukraine war in 2022, the aftermath of which had sent discounts to as deep as $6.  .  .  .

My bet is Trump is using tariffs as a carrot for China to decouple from Russia to further isolating them. And why they only got slapped with 10%.

UN report: Dozens of Ukrainian prisoners of war killed

Kiev (dpa) - The UN Human Rights Office complains of a sharp increase in the killing of captured Ukrainian soldiers by the Russian army. Since the end of August, the human rights observation mission in the Ukraine The office announced 79 executions in 24 cases. Many Ukrainians who surrendered or were in the hands of the Russians were shot on the spot.

The mission therefore also documented that an injured and out of action Russian soldier was killed by Ukrainian forces.

According to its own statements, the UN office analyzed video and film material from Ukrainian and Russian sources and interviewed witnesses. The time and place of the incidents indicated that such shootings occurred primarily where Russian troops advanced on their offensive. The reports were classified as credible.

The actions are long verified
This means a sharp increase compared to earlier periods, a spokesman for the observation mission said on request. The verification of such acts takes a long time. Between December 2023 and August 2024, 13 incidents were confirmed in which 30 Ukrainian military personnel were killed.  .  .  .
