Armenia to leave Russia-led security bloc, says PM

June 12 (Reuters) - Armenia will leave a Russia-led security bloc, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan confirmed on Wednesday for the first time, accusing members of the Collective Security Treaty Organisation of having planned a war against his country with Azerbaijan.

Pashinyan, who has tried to cultivate closer ties with the United States and European Union, said in March that Armenia, traditionally a close Russian ally, would leave the CSTO unless the security bloc detailed its commitment to uphold his country's security in a satisfactory way.

Pashinyan's comments to parliamentarians - reported by the Armenpress news agency - suggest he feels he has not received such a commitment and is resolved to quit the CSTO.

"We will leave. We will decide when to exit... Don't worry, we won't return," said Pashinyan, an ex-journalist who came to power in 2018 on the back of street protests that swept away Russia-friendly politicians.

The CSTO, headquartered in Moscow, also includes Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Belarus. It had said it was waiting for Yerevan to clarify its stance.  .  .

In mid-May, the Ukrainian army launched a powerful barrage of 10 American-made Army Tactical Missile System rockets at a Russian base in Belbek outside Sevastopol in occupied Crimea.

The raid inflicted as much damage as Ukrainian planners could have realistically hoped for. Photos from the ground confirmed the two-ton ATACMS, each scattering hundreds of grenade-sized bomblets, destroyed a radar and two launchers from an S-400 air-defense battery. There were reports the rockets also damaged four warplanes at a nearby military airfield.

Belbek and Sevastopol are important bases for the Russian air force and what remains of the Russian navy’s Black Sea Fleet, so it should come as no surprise that the Russians promptly replaced the wrecked components of the S-400, whose missiles range as far as 250 miles.

And like the punchline of an explosive joke, the Ukrainians bombarded the Belbek S-400 battery again on Tuesday.

Unspecified munitions—likely the same 190-mile-range M39A1 ATACMS that hit Belbek in May—rained down on the Belbek S-400 as well as a two other nearby air-defenses batteries: another S-400 as well as a shorter-ranged S-300.

“At least 10 ATACMS missiles were used in the strike,” the Ukrainian Center for Defense Strategies reported, “with the Russian air-defense system failing to intercept any of them.”

Two radars were destroyed, the Ukrainian defense ministry claimed—one each from an S-300 and S-400 battery. “Regarding the third radar, information is being clarified,” the ministry added. “The detonation of munitions was recorded in all three areas where the anti-aircraft missile systems were stationed.”

Belbek is becoming an attrition trap for the Russian air force’s best air-defense system. The Ukrainians hit fresh missile batteries roughly as fast as they can deploy.  .  .  .

S-500 missile system

Operational history
The first S-500 prototype went on combat duty in Moscow on 13 October 2021.   However, it did not yet meet the full set of requirements specified by its operator, the 1st Special Purpose Air and Missile Defense Army.

Design
The S-500 is designed for intercepting and destroying intercontinental ballistic missiles, as well as hypersonic cruise missiles and aircraft.  With a planned range of 600 km (370 mi) for anti-ballistic missile (ABM) and 500 km (310 mi) for air defense, the S-500 was envisaged to be able to detect and simultaneously engage up to 10 ballistic hypersonic targets flying at up to a maximum of 7 km/s (4.3 mi/s).  The altitude of a target engaged is claimed to be as high as 180–200 km (110–120 mi).  However, as of 2023, the S-500's ability to intercept hypersonic missiles had not yet been tested.  Other targets it has been announced to defend against include unmanned aerial vehicles, low Earth orbit satellites, space weapons launched from hypersonic aircraft, and hypersonic orbital platforms.  It is to have a response time of less than 4 seconds (compared to the S-400's of less than 10)

  • 55K6MA and 85Zh6-2 command posts, based on BAZ-69092-12 6x6
  • 91N6A(M) acquisition and battle management radar, a modification of the 91N6 (Big Bird) towed by the BAZ-6403.01 8x8 tractor
  • 96L6-TsP acquisition radar, an upgraded version of the 96L6 (Cheese Board) on BAZ-69096 10x10
  • 76T6 multimode engagement radar on BAZ-6909-022 8x8
  • 77T6 ABM engagement radar on BAZ-69096 10x10

Crimea was part of Russia from 1783 until Khrushchev unilaterally gave it to Ukraine in 1954.  The people of Crimea have voted for independence from Ukraine and the majority consider themselves Russian.   Rather than occupiers, the majority considered Russia a protector and ally in their efforts to break free of Kiev.

Face value judgements rarely hold up in Eastern Europe. :shrug:

That ten year agreement is not worth the paper it is printed on.  Since when does the USA honor any agreement?  Ask the American Indians about how we honor agreements.

$2 trillion deficit each year and growing, and who in their right mind believes we can continue to supply Ukraine for ten more years?  Get real!!!  This nonsense of destroying the US Dollar MUST END.

Republicans need to purge the RINO POSs holding elected office, and return to being a conservative entity, otherwise this Unity Party that is running things will absolutely destroy the country.
