I have lived in a barndo (think condo) many times. A horse ranch foreman is likely to live in the birthing apartment in the barn with the horses. That is a sparse but modern one room apt. built next to the large birthing stall, so there is some ease while keeping an eye on a troublesome birth.
Another such arrangement... Folks opening a new ranch tend to be shy of money... So they will build a fully appointed multi-room apartment above the barn to save money... The ranch family will live there till they recover from the purchase of the land enough to build a proper house.
This space invariably gets converted to foreman's quarters and the ranch office.
Very common, and decent digs.
