We got snow this morning for about an hour. Only because the weatherman forecast zero precipitation today. How can someone be so consistently wrong yet still keep his job?

I swear that when I was growing up, we didn't have ice storms. We might have a "snowflake" storm. Not even enough to make snow ice cream. My friend assures me that I just don't remember. But I don't think that's true.

Well the old fireplace insert is holding the temps within the 60s inside... Tonight is a test as it will be colder, but this morning it was 61 in the house and we managed to get the temp back up to 70 before nightfall. It is all good, I have an electric blanket and some thermal undies that are getting good use. Wife is thrilled (she likes the cold)... boy is buried under about 6 quilts and seems to be doing fine. Dog is enjoying her heat lamp on the porch but we had to put some water on the porch because her's froze outside pretty solid. I carried some coal out of the fireplace to put in the shed to try and keep it above freezing (so the paints and things don't go bad).

I'm so thankful we haven't lost power nor Wi-Fi in the midst of this storm, and that neither of us has taken a tumble while out trying to clear the driveway.

They did a long segment on the snow-plowing results in the Montgomery County, Maryland area of Washington, DC.

The vast majority of side streets are NOT plowed and the streets are covered in large chunks of solid ice.

Then it dawned on me... the County workers are all illegal immigrants.

Montgomery County is a Felony-level Sanctuary County, inside a Sanctuary State.

Wondering if the work inefficiency is due to their fear of being targeted by ICE...or something more simple: It's 20 degrees BELOW our seasonal norms.

Perhaps it's a form of going on strike, but I think they're having trouble filling the positions.

Yeah i've heard the term "bomb cyclone" thrown around recently. Something about barometric pressure?

The massive temperature gradient between the Gulf Stream and the land causes a quick spin up around Cape Hatteras. I have been out there in the winter. The shelf water is in the 40s, but suddenly you encounter the gulf stream where the water is teal colored and in the 70s.

An 'Arctic hurricane' is expected to form off the US East Coast, threatening millions of Americans with extreme cold, heavy snow, and dangerous winter conditions.

Weather models indicate that the powerful system will develop off the coast of the Carolinas early Saturday before rapidly intensifying at an explosive rate, fast enough to meet the criteria of a bomb cyclone.

The impending Arctic blast is expected to be so extreme that temperatures are predicted to fall to near freezing throughout Florida on Sunday. Even Miami is expected to reach the 30s that morning.

Throughout the rest of the country, including portions of the South, Midwest, Northern Plains, and Northeast, temperatures are expected to fall near zero on Sunday morning, increasing the risk of hypothermia or frostbite for anyone outdoors.

Meteorologist Ryan Hall, known as 'The Internet's Weather Man,' warned that the bomb cyclone, a powerful winter storm that strengthens quickly as air pressure drops sharply, will develop in the Atlantic this week, spiraling just like a tropical cyclone.

'That's pretty much a hurricane,' Hall said on Tuesday. 'Whoever ends up on the western side of that in the cold area is going to get absolutely clobbered with snow.'

While Hall cautioned that it was too early to say if the storm would make landfall this weekend and deliver up to a foot of snow in some areas, the forecaster was certain that this week's dangerously cold temperatures are about to get worse.

'Another arctic blast is going to come around the backside of this low-pressure system, probably the most powerful one of the year so far, and it's going to plummet temperatures down 30 degrees below average,' the meteorologist warned.

SWFL had frost this morning, just a bit north of here had a freeze and this weather will continue on for a few days ... Sunday we'll see night temps at 33 -- with 20 mph winds; that's darn cold for us. We will have several nights in the 30's -- highs only around 50. Other than getting up on a ladder and draping sheets over all our Christmas palms and flowering trees there's just no way to protect them. Nurseries around here are busily putting up heavy screening to help save their trees and plants.

Our palms will survive short periods of cold in the 40's so, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they survive -- unfortunately our flowering trees likely won't make it.

They are predicting snow in Tampa! I only saw it snow in Tampa one time. That was back in the 80's!

Woot saw a single snowflake tonight... OK, I am out. Probable all we will see (other than cold)... Got another load of wood today next to the door. Been burning the bark parts that broke off the logs that nobody wants... (ya burn it when it ain't that cold, it produces some heat when you need just "some heat").

Have got use to the house being a little cooler, can take some lower 60s just fine. Power bill came in (around $200) so not bad... Water bill was close to the same (little cheaper, but has things like garbage fees built in). Read somewhere that 1/3 of Americans are having trouble paying their power bill, so glad to heat with the wood.

I used to buy slabs from lumber mills Seems like a pretty sweet deal... they come in a big, banded bundle you can chop right down through with a chainsaw - you peel off stove lengths in minutes, right on the trailer...

And *DIRT* cheap.

Only problem is that they are mostly bark. Ash through the roof... and sweep the chimney twice a month (and that's not enough).

Didn't take me long to figure out it wasn't worth it... Went back to bucking up buckskin Tamarack, for all the trouble they are to go knock down up some logging road somewhere, buck and bust up and throw in the truck..

That's cold!

Set out for my walk this afternoon and 15 minutes into it I turned around and headed back. Too darn cold for me. We are under a gale warning and a freeze advisory.

Aww.... right about now, I could use a woodstove -- I would so use it.

Yeah, we do that creosote stuff every few weeks (dries out/prevents the slags on the walls of chimney). Only clean our chimney once a year (and it really isn't bad at all) as most the chunks break off and fall down. Since only burn hardwood we miss out on a lot of the buildup problems. Still we probable have a two gallons of dirt come down when we do clean. Can't vacuum it cause the fine dust blows right through my shop vac (Yeah, wife taught me a lesson of manners after doing that one year).

We burn firewood with bark, but often if falls off and I do use the larger pieces to extend the fire when it doesn't need a bad hot burn to keep house warm. Not great BTU, but sometimes that is all you need.

Problem we have today is the wind, the old house is drafty, so even though we don't have -18 degrees the house can get cool... I pulled in the kerosene heater to add a little auxiliary heat.

The advantage of a drafty house, is very unlikely to die of CO (or is it CO2) poisoning. Same with Radon, a drafty house tends not to have any concentration of Radon giving problems. Heck, had a house full of boys at one time, so some ventilation helps after some oatmeal cookies.
