We got snow this morning for about an hour.  Only because the weatherman forecast zero precipitation today.  How can someone be so consistently wrong yet still keep his job?

When I lived in St. Louis many years ago, we had an ice storm that encased everything in nearly 1/2". The front yard was like a hilly ice rink, impossible to traverse, and the car that was parked in the driveway was completely stuck. I chipped and chipped, trying to free the tires (without puncturing them) when, in my awkward crouching position, my leg shot out on the ice, I heard something loudly pop, and was sure I'd torn a hamstring or worse. Wow, did that hurt! Thankfully, it wasn't as serious as I feared, but that got me thinking about moving back east to my hometown where they may be a lot of snow at times, but ice storms were fairly rare.

My sole purpose in trying to go out today was to check my propane and start my truck and let it run for a while. I hope the cold hasn't killed my battery. I'll find out later in the week I guess.

I swear that when I was growing up, we didn't have ice storms. We might have a "snowflake" storm. Not even enough to make snow ice cream. My friend assures me that I just don't remember. But I don't think that's true.

Well the old fireplace insert is holding the temps within the 60s inside... Tonight is a test as it will be colder, but this morning it was 61 in the house and we managed to get the temp back up to 70 before nightfall. It is all good, I have an electric blanket and some thermal undies that are getting good use. Wife is thrilled (she likes the cold)... boy is buried under about 6 quilts and seems to be doing fine. Dog is enjoying her heat lamp on the porch but we had to put some water on the porch because her's froze outside pretty solid. I carried some coal out of the fireplace to put in the shed to try and keep it above freezing (so the paints and things don't go bad).

I'm so thankful we haven't lost power nor Wi-Fi in the midst of this storm, and that neither of us has taken a tumble while out trying to clear the driveway.

Now the models are hinting at a Miller A setup this weekend with snow in the Mid Atlantic and 30 foot swells offshore.

They did a long segment on the snow-plowing results in the Montgomery County, Maryland area of Washington, DC.

The vast majority of side streets are NOT plowed and the streets are covered in large chunks of solid ice.

Then it dawned on me... the County workers are all illegal immigrants.

Wondering if the work inefficiency is due to their fear of being targeted by ICE...or something more simple:  It's 20 degrees BELOW our seasonal norms.

The massive temperature gradient between the Gulf Stream and the land causes a quick spin up around Cape Hatteras.  I have been out there in the winter.  The shelf water is in the 40s, but suddenly you encounter the gulf stream where the water is teal colored and in the 70s.

An 'Arctic hurricane' is expected to form off the US East Coast, threatening millions of Americans with extreme cold, heavy snow, and dangerous winter conditions.

Weather models indicate that the powerful system will develop off the coast of the Carolinas early Saturday before rapidly intensifying at an explosive rate, fast enough to meet the criteria of a bomb cyclone.

The impending Arctic blast is expected to be so extreme that temperatures are predicted to fall to near freezing throughout Florida on Sunday. Even Miami is expected to reach the 30s that morning.

Throughout the rest of the country, including portions of the South, Midwest, Northern Plains, and Northeast, temperatures are expected to fall near zero on Sunday morning, increasing the risk of hypothermia or frostbite for anyone outdoors.

Meteorologist Ryan Hall, known as 'The Internet's Weather Man,' warned that the bomb cyclone, a powerful winter storm that strengthens quickly as air pressure drops sharply, will develop in the Atlantic this week, spiraling just like a tropical cyclone.

'That's pretty much a hurricane,' Hall said on Tuesday. 'Whoever ends up on the western side of that in the cold area is going to get absolutely clobbered with snow.'

While Hall cautioned that it was too early to say if the storm would make landfall this weekend and deliver up to a foot of snow in some areas, the forecaster was certain that this week's dangerously cold temperatures are about to get worse.

'Another arctic blast is going to come around the backside of this low-pressure system, probably the most powerful one of the year so far, and it's going to plummet temperatures down 30 degrees below average,' the meteorologist warned.

SWFL had frost this morning, just a bit north of here had a freeze and this weather will continue on for a few days ... Sunday we'll see night temps at 33 -- with 20 mph winds; that's darn cold for us. We will have several nights in the 30's -- highs only around 50.  Other than getting up on a ladder and draping sheets over all our Christmas palms and flowering trees there's just no way to protect them.  Nurseries around here are busily putting up heavy screening to help save their trees and plants.

Our palms will survive short periods of cold in the 40's so, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they survive  -- unfortunately our flowering trees likely won't make it.

They are predicting snow in Tampa!  I only saw it snow in Tampa one time.  That was back in the 80's!

Fun times.  Those people can't drive in the rain.  Wait til it snows!
