Locals and campers were blindsided by the sudden surge of 20-26 feet on the Guadalupe River

We keep hearing this from Big Media over and over ... but, really? It was preceeded by freaking 10 inches of rain

And Kerr County, Texas only gets 30" of rain per year ... so shouldn't getting 1/3 of that compressed into a span of just 2 days be considered a warning to get out??

(not trying to be a jerk in the midst of this terrible tragedy, just pointing out that common sense still helps a lot with basic survival ...)

Disgusting and evil. Christians no doubt support this woman's charity and she hates Christians. Honestly, this deserves to be posted on its own and then shared wide and far!

Disgusting and evil is right.  When will the hatred, bitterness and lies end?

When it happens after midnight, and people are asleep, and the rain can be miles away while the flood comes to you?

Some of us are savvy and respect mother nature's hissy fits enough to get clear, but many are not. Sit through enough warnings where nothing happens and there is a tendency (human nature, really) to not take them as seriously as some of them merit.

It's like blizzard warnings in North Dakota. ('Yeah, what else is new' can easily become the attitude) But drive a few hundred miles in those conditions (and I have), and you earn respect for what you are facing.

I can pretty much guarantee no one who has survived this will ever blow off a flood warning.

The question is, is there a better way to get those out, regardless of the time of day?
Cell phone alerts only work if he phone is on, and if you wake up and pay attention.

Perhaps sirens that warn of rising water levels, but even those would only give a very few minutes of lead time unless they are tied to flow monitoring upstream from the site to provide more advanced warning.

If someone wants to make AI really useful, they would have a system that integrates rainfall, rate, and the geometry of the watershed to produce automatic flood warnings with the maximum amount of lead time to evacuate.
Yes, that's done to some extent to produce warnings now, but those warnings are seen as precautionary by many and not a sign of imminent hazard. This might add a level of urgency to evacuation.

In Texas region prone to catastrophic floods,
questions grow about lack of warning

Water rose fast along the Guadalupe River, causing 68 deaths as of Sunday afternoon. Local officials said they couldn’t have seen it coming.

Paul Cobler July 5, 2025

The forecast began to look ominous in the Texas Hill Country on Thursday afternoon.

A flood watch was issued by the National Weather Service at 1:18 p.m. that predicted up to 7 inches of isolated rainfall early Friday morning in South Central Texas, including Kerr County.

By the time the sun rose on the Fourth of July, less than 24 hours later, as much as 12 inches of rain had fallen in parts of the region while its residents were asleep, according to NWS radar estimates. The Guadalupe River gauge at the unincorporated community of Hunt, where the river forks, recorded a 22-foot rise in just two hours, said Bob Fogarty, meteorologist with the NWS Austin/San Antonio office. The gauge recorded a level of 29 ½ feet before becoming completely submerged and failing, Fogarty added.

All true. I grew up camping the Guadalupe River, a fabulous place but certainly required respect.

Fortunately, my dad was a meteorologist at the US Weather Bureau in Austin, so knew behaviors of the weather patterns.

Once playing golf near there under blue skies we noticed the local creek was rising. Within minutes two foot rise with no rain.  We barely got off the course before the green was under water.

not how it works.

One can have clear blue skies but the rain 50 miles upriver causes huge downriver flooding.  Happens with little warning.

Castro on TX Flood: Trump’s Cuts to National Weather Service ‘Should Be Investigated’

Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-TX) said that after the deadly flood of the Guadalupe River in central Texas, the Trump administration’s cuts to the National Weather Service should be investigated.

castro is evil.

He knows full well those cuts are not for weather forecasting but the climate change game that NWS has been playing since Obama

Yeah, those lies are all over X.

About the only thing that might work are stream monitors that record and transmit water height and time to some sort of processor that would sort out rapid rises in river levels and trigger warning sirens to tell people to bug out. The gauges would have to be upstream, and the monitoring setup would have to take into account the geometry of the watercourses in order to be able to predict water levels downstream at any given point. Tributaries would have to be monitored, too.

Even then, 10 minutes or so might be the best some places get for a warning to bug out.

Texas flooding kills more than 80 as search continues for dozens of people

The death toll from the devastating floods across central Texas surpassed 80 as dozens of people remain missing. In Kerr County, at least 40 children and 28 adults died, according to officials.

Camp Mystic says it's mourning loss of 27 campers, counselors in Texas flooding

Camp Mystic in Hunt, Texas, said it’s mourning the loss of 27 campers and counselors following the flooding of the Guadalupe River over the Fourth of July weekend.

“Our hearts are broken alongside our families that are enduring this unimaginable tragedy. We are praying for them constantly,” the camp said in a statement on Monday.

“We have been in communication with local and state authorities who are tirelessly deploying extensive resources to search for our missing girls,” it added.

As of this morning, ten campers and one counselor were reported missing. At least 82 people have died in central Texas following the flooding that began early Friday.

“We ask for your continued prayers, respect and privacy for each of our families affected. May the Lord continue to wrap His presence around all of us,” said the camp, which describes itself on its website as a “private Christian summer camp for girls.”

Teen camp counselors describe harrowing moment they wrote girls’ names on their bodies in case they were swept away in floodwaters
By Patrick Reilly
Published July 7, 2025, 6:53 a.m. ET

Two teenage camp counselors have recalled the harrowing moment they wrote the names of the young girls they were caring for on their bodies in case they were swept away in the raging Texas floodwaters.

Silvana Garza and Maria Paula said they desperately put on a “happy face” to keep the children calm as they prepared to evacuate a branch of Camp Mystic neighboring the one where at least five girls were killed and 11 are still missing.

Texas flood death toll set to top 100 as family members summoned to Kerrville to ID bodies with DNA

By MARYANN MARTINEZ, TEXAS BUREAU CHIEF FOR DAILYMAIL.COM

Published: 11:29 EDT, 6 July 2025 | Updated: 03:30 EDT, 7 July 2025

Texas's Division of Emergency Management predicted the number of dead as a result of catastrophic flooding in Kerrville on July 4 would top 100, Daily Mail can exclusively reveal.

In an email sent out Saturday, the state disaster office told partners the number of dead would surpass 100, two different sources confirmed to Daily Mail.

The estimate of the dead is vastly different than the message state officials are projecting publicly, insisting that they are still searching for people who are alive, and refusing to say rescue efforts have shifted to recovery of remains.

'Our state assets and local partners are continuing to search for live victims,' the head of TDEM W. Nim Kidd told reporters at a press conference Saturday.

'Our hope and prayer is that there is still people alive that are out there.'

As of Sunday morning, 69 had been confirmed dead, and 11 girls and one counselor from Camp Mystic are missing.

Of the dead, 46 are adults and 21 are children, local officials said.

Additionally, DNA testing will be used to help identify the remains of the flood victims, a state source told Daily Mail.

Families have been asked for blood draws or other records to help identify the bodies of loved ones who have been recovered.

It always seems to be the AWFLS, like this Doctor, who are the most tolerant in these maters where great empathy is needed most for those affected...

Wonder how many MAGA parents are already  in her  patient list as guardians.  If I were them, I'd ask and wonder does her ideology impact care provided.

She's fired.

Look at her credentials.

She's affiliated with Houston Methodist Hospital (which was the first hospital to fire employees that refused the Covid shot), and Texas Children's Hospital (which has been caught performing transgender surgery without parents' approval).

Both these hospitals have declined significantly since these actions came to light.  No wonder people like this witch doctor worked there.

Central Florida agencies deploy to Texas to aid flash flood relief efforts

Six members of the Central Florida Urban Search & Rescue Task Force 4 were deployed to Texas to help the state following flash floods that left more than 80 people dead over 4th of July weekend, officials said.

According to a news release issued Monday by the Seminole County Fire Department, the search and rescue team includes two members from its department, two members from the Orange County Fire Department and two members from the Orlando Fire Department.

The six team members will be deployed in a Swift Water Team, which are comprised of water rescue specialists and boats, officials said.

The rescue teams are typically deployed for 10 to 14 days and are designed to be self-sufficient — they bring their own resources so that nothing is taxed from the geographic areas to which they are deployed, authorities said. ........

Texas Flooding Devastation Laid Bare In Harrowing Images, With More Rain Forecast, Warnings

After a devastating holiday weekend that left dozens dead and many still missing, Central Texas is bracing for more rain. Harrowing images have captured the devastation left behind by the historic floods which downed trees, washed away homes and left roads underwater. Forecasters warn that additional storms this week could exacerbate already hazardous flood conditions, with saturated ground and swollen rivers leaving little room for further water accumulation. Emergency officials remain on high alert as the region faces the threat of renewed flash flooding.

What to Know:

A new round of storms is expected to bring 2–4 inches of rain, with isolated totals up to 10 inches possible.
The National Weather Service has extended flood watches across Central Texas through Monday evening.
Areas hardest hit by the July 4 floods—including Kerr, Llano, and Bell counties—remain at high risk.
Emergency crews are still conducting search and rescue operations for missing residents and campers.
The Guadalupe River and other waterways remain dangerously elevated, with little capacity for runoff.
Officials urge residents to avoid low-lying areas and heed all weather alerts and evacuation orders.
The flooding has already become one of the deadliest in U.S. history, with at least 91 confirmed dead.

For those wondering how this happened, why there wasn't more warning, etc., this video from a Houston meteorologist explains the weather that caused the flooding pretty well, as well as laying out the timing of events:

Democrats call for probe into cuts at National Weather Service after Texas floods

Sen. Chuck Schumer is pressing the NWS’s watchdog to probe whether Trump’s cuts worsened the recent catastrophe.

Ja'han Jones  |  July 7, 2025  |  5:28 PM EDT

The Trump administration is facing outrage and despair in the wake of deadly flooding in Texas, as Democrats in Congress are asking whether the president’s cuts to the National Weather Service limited emergency response efforts — and, if so, how.

Nearly 100 people, including more than two dozen children, have been confirmed dead and dozens more remain missing following the flooding in Kerr County. Multiple Texas officials, including the mayor of Kerrville, which suffered immense devastation, have criticized the NWS’s forecasting and warnings ahead of the flood.

In a letter Monday to the agency’s inspector general, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., asked for an investigation into what role, if any, the Trump administration’s recent layoffs and other reductions in staff may have played in the death toll and property damage.

Schumer’s letter cites a New York Times report that quotes former NWS officials as saying the agency’s forecasts were as good as could be expected, but that key staffing shortages due to Trump’s cuts left areas without officials to coordinate with local emergency managers to warn local residents and help them evacuate. “To honor the lives of those lost, we have a responsibility to the American people to determine whether preventable failures contributed to this tragedy — and to ensure that it never happens again,” Schumer wrote.

That sentiment was echoed by Texas Democrat Rep. Joaquin Castro, who said during an CNN interview over the weekend that he couldn’t state conclusively that the NWS cuts had played a role in the government’s readiness for and response to the Texas floods, but that an investigation is warranted.  .  .  .  .

Excellent post, and Kudos to the meteorologist who presented it. Some things are beyond our ability to predict, and the confluence of rare and serious events can often have tragic consequences.

Sometimes shit just happens.  Try as they might the weather does not come with a California type warning label.  Life is hazardous to your health.
