Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov reiterated the Kremlin's rejection of a ceasefire and unchanged demands, including demilitarization and regime change in Ukraine ... . ISW continues to assess that the Kremlin remains uninterested in good-faith peace negotiations and any settlement to the war that does not acquiesce to its demands ...

Belarus recently unveiled a jointly produced Russian-Belarusian modernized armored personnel carrier. Ukrainian military-focused outlet Militarnyi reported on July 7 that the Belarusian 140th Repair Plant coordinated with an unspecified Russian defense industrial enterprise to produce a modernized BTR-60MB3 armored personnel carrier that features enhanced firepower, an upgraded powertrain, and a modernized troop compartment equipped with advanced electronics and surveillance cameras.  Militarnyi noted that the armored personnel carrier still suffers from insufficient armor protection, a difficult dismount, and an underpowered engine. Militarnyi reported that the Russian Ministry of Defense-run TV network Zvezda claimed that the modernized vehicle is intended for foreign customers.

[ You can plainly see that 'modernized' Russian equipment is only 'modernized' to the standards of several decades prior. ]

The death of the dismissed minister Roman Starovoit is certainly the news of the day. Yes, it is no secret that he was one of the participants in the scheme to embezzle budget billions on the construction of defense structures along the border with Ukraine.

But, firstly, after many structures had already been built according to the documents (in reality, the funds were simply stolen), Starovoit was promoted from the post of governor of the Kursk region to the chair of the Minister of Transport! And at the same time, he left his man (Alexei Smirnov), who continued to profit from the defense of the region, which ultimately led to a breakthrough of the border, the death of our people (both military and civilian), as well as large-scale destruction.

Secondly, Starovoit could have given up other accomplices. In completely different cases. There have already been rumors that he was allegedly killed. This is all nonsense. But sources agree that "Starovoit got off easy", because he could have either been sent to prison or even to the storm troopers in the SVO - to wash away his guilt with blood. How Starovoit would have looked into the eyes of the guys whose comrades died because of his theft is a big question.

By the way, against the backdrop of Starovoit's death, the arrest of former deputy head of the Russian Guard Viktor Strigunov went unnoticed. These stats are reminiscent of the daily body count numbers from the military during the Vietnam War.

Ukraine is holding its own tactically, but is losing strategically.  Putin already posses the territories he wanted most.  Now he's managing to hold on to them in the hopes the West will lose resolve, get bored, or be distracted.  Putin wins by not losing and not having to give terroritory back to Ukraine.

Real progress would be making the Russians retreat on the ground after establishing air superiority.

If air superiority can't be established.  Mass attack with drone mechanized vehicles, tanks, and planes may needed for a land breakthrough.  Drone armored vehicles may be the ground force multiplier that Ukraine needs.

I remember that day so well, and the emotions I felt. I think many of you do, too.

Russia keeps attacking our children, killing civilians. Russia remains unpunished for its war crimes.

A lot of Russo-Ukraine War news bubbled up last week when every other damn thing was happening, so here’s a roundup, much (but not all) from Suchomimus. Plus some bits on Russia’s economy and their continuing friction with various neighbors.

•  Multiple successful Storm Shadow strikes:

•  “Storm Shadow and Ukrainian-produced cruise missiles hit a train yard in Yasynuvyata, the officer Headquarters of the 8th Guards Combined Arms Army plus drones destroy oil depot in Luhansk. Multiple impacts are seen–at least EIGHT missiles hit the train yard. Many more targeted the office headquarters. Six drones impacted the oil depot….One of Ukraine’s biggest missile strikes of the war so far.”

•  “SAM System Factory Hit By Drones in Izhevsk, Russia – Over 1,300 km From Ukraine. Liutyi drones hit the Kupol Electromechanical Plant which produces Tor and Osa SAM systems for Russia as well as drones, including Shaheds.”

•  Russia did manage to carry out a massive missile attack against Kiev, but as usual with Russian missile and drone attacks, it’s not clear that anything of military significance was actually hit.
•  There’s always talk that Russia’s economy is about to crack due to the strain from their illegal war of territorial aggression (as well western sanctions), but Putin recently announced that Russia would decrease defense spending next year. Given that there’s no way for Russia to recover material and equipment losses to its forces while continuing the war, he must imagine some sort of end to the conflict is near.

•  And there are some signs that, this time, it’s possible that Russia’s economy really is starting to crack.

The Russian economy is on the brink of recession, with several key sectors showing dwindling productivity, according to analysis. Alexander Kolyandr from the Center for European Policy Analysis took to X to explain that the country’s manufacturing sector was “losing its mojo”, even in military production.
