Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment, May 7, 2025

Excerpts:
US officials acknowledged Russia's continued intransigence toward any ceasefire agreement in Ukraine while reiterating that Ukraine remains committed to US President Donald Trump's proposed comprehensive 30-day ceasefire ... US Special Envoy to Ukraine General Keith Kellogg stated on May 6 that Russian President Vladimir Putin's refusal to agree to a 30-day ceasefire is the main impediment to establishing peace in Ukraine and that Russia will be hurt if the parties do not agree to a comprehensive ceasefire, as “Russia is not winning the war.”

Kellogg reiterated that Ukraine has agreed to a renewable comprehensive sea, air, and land ceasefire for a minimum of 30 days and that Ukraine is willing to immediately sign the agreement ... Kellogg stated that Ukraine is prepared to accept a “ceasefire in place” that will require both Russia and Ukraine to withdraw 15 kilometers from the current frontline in order to establish a 30-kilometer demilitarized zone that could fall under an unspecified monitoring mechanism.

Russia is likely attempting to prolong and delay discussions about a comprehensive ceasefire to obfuscate its continued rejection of the United States’ ceasefire proposals ... ISW continues to assess that Russia likely remains opposed to any sort of enforcement or monitoring mechanisms, as Russia would likely weaponize the absence of such mechanisms to flood the information space with unsubstantiated claims of Ukrainian ceasefire violations, as it has done before.

Russian authorities will likely test their ability to completely disconnect large areas of Russia from the internet on May 9 under the guise of protecting Russian Victory Day celebrations ... Russian authorities have been periodically testing their Sovereign Internet system, which allows Russia to completely disconnect itself from the global internet and increasingly censor Russians’ ability to communicate and access information. Reports of significant Russian internet outages have increased in the first months of 2025, and Russian authorities likely seek to take advantage of the May 9 holiday to conduct a widespread test of the Sovereign Internet system without encountering significant opposition from Russians.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro signed the Russia-Venezuela Strategic Partnership and Cooperation Agreement on May 7 ... The agreement notably includes a provision for the development of military-technical cooperation between Russia and Venezuela. This strategic partnership agreement coheres with Russian efforts to strengthen relations with Venezuela over the past several years, in large part to contest US influence in the Western hemisphere and to paint Russia as a competitive and capable world power.

Ukrainians Take Crimea By Storm!

Excerpts from the video transcript:

Today [ May 7, 8 pm ], there is important news from Crimea ... the Ukrainians conducted a massive, combined air and sea drone strike against the Crimean Peninsula with devastating results. With Ukrainians threatening this would be just the beginning, panic spread throughout the Russian government that the most important event in their calendar is under immense threat. Firstly, Ukrainians launched a massive drone strike targeting Russian military assets across Crimea and the Black Sea. Utilizing a combination of aerial and naval drones, Ukrainian forces launched a highly coordinated assault, systematically dismantling layered Russian defenses. The operation began with precision strikes on key air defense and electronic warfare systems, neutralizing Russia’s ability to detect and intercept incoming threats.

Once these systems were degraded, Ukrainian drones targeted patrol boats and airfields, paving the way for deeper strikes, and exposing vulnerabilities in Russia’s coastal and aerial security. Notably, Ukraine's military intelligence agency deployed Magura V5 and V7 naval drones equipped with R-73 infrared air-to-air missiles ... The strikes were widespread, with Ukrainian drones reported over areas including Zhuravlivka near Simferopol, Orlovka, Tarkhankut, and Yevpatoria, destroying numerous targets like an air defense system S-300, an Obzor-3, Kasta-2E2, ST-68, and Imbir radars. The Belbek, Hvardiiske, Saky, and Kacha airfields, and the Kirovske military air base were also targeted, as they are used by Russia to control airspace over the Black Sea and launch strikes on Ukrainian territory.

The important Russian radio-technical intel complex Zvezda near Stavropol was hit again, critical for Russian satellite communication. The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed to have intercepted 112 drones in total, yet the scale and precision of the attacks indicate a significant breach in Russian defenses. Numerous reports from eyewitnesses from the peninsula confirm that, despite Russian claims, there were a substantial number of explosions to be heard and seen, a clear indication that not all drones were intercepted. Ukrainian military intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov suggested that visitors to Moscow might need earplugs ... the military equipment and personnel assembled in grouped-together locations, before and after, the event present legitimate military targets.

In response to the heightened threat, Russia has reportedly already redeployed over 280 air defense systems, including S-400, Tor, and Buk air defense systems, as well as radars and electronic warfare equipment to Moscow to bolster security for the Victory Day Parade ... the redeployment of at least 280 highly effective air defense assets to Moscow has left other regions vulnerable, without the necessary protection ... massive gaps are appearing in Russia’s air defense network, with the recent strikes in Crimea appearing to be just the beginning of something much bigger. Overall, after the devastating strike on Crimea, President Zelenskyy's remarks have unsettled the Russian government, prompting a reactive and resource-intensive shift of air defense assets. By forcing Russia to concentrate huge amounts of air defenses around Moscow, Ukraine has created opportunities to strike elsewhere, potentially leading to significant losses for Russia in the coming days. This not only threatens Russia's military assets but also challenges the internally perceived invulnerability of the Russian state

Kursk Offensive Continues. Dragon Teeth Breached! Bridges and Command Centers Destroyed!

Excerpts from the video transcript:

Today [ May 8, 8 pm ], there is interesting news from the Kursk direction ... the Ukrainians launched another surprising incursion through the border. This is putting extra pressure on the Russian reserves and could force them into an overreaction that can lead to even more serious problems for them and result in an operational-level penetration and crisis ... The Ukrainian plan incorporates creating multiple simultaneous threats along the border, and strategically prevents the Russians from focusing on their Donbas summer campaign by baiting them into costly defensive operations in Kursk. The incursion started with well-timed preliminary strikes, with the Ukrainian Air Force hitting a Russian drone command center near the village of Tyotkino, reportedly killing up to 20 Russian personnel ... Ukrainian forces shelled Tyotkino and engaged in a battle near the railway station, while Ukrainian aviation destroyed a bridge near the village of Zvannoe, to isolate the Russian defenders. These actions disrupted Russian mobility and communications, laying the groundwork for the main effort.

Towards Tyotkino, Ukrainians launched a sophisticated maneuver ... attacking Russian logistics ... in the Novi Put direction, the local “dragon’s teeth” defenses were already compromised since September last year, so Ukrainian armored vehicles moved in after mine-clearing operations, exploiting a pre-existing gap without conducting a full-scale breaching assault. This allowed for rapid penetration and complicated the Russian tactical response ... Russian analysts suggest that this may not be the Ukrainians' main offensive, but rather a diversion aimed at drawing off Russian operational reserves and conducting their main strike in a completely different direction ...  As Ukrainian forces that withdrew earlier from the first Kursk incursion were not destroyed, but are still combat-effective, they can now be reinserted into action, giving Ukraine the initiative.

This would extend even more pressure over the Russian command to throw its forces in a counterattack, which would be doomed to end in disaster with huge losses, due to the terrain and Ukrainian drone dominance ... if the current effort succeeds, would be a push toward Glushkovo. Capturing ground along the Seym River could effectively cut Russian communications to the west, isolating multiple positions and paving the way for a new broader Ukrainian presence in Kursk Oblast. If this happens before or during Victory Day on May 9, it would not only be a military blow to Russia, but a psychological one as well, overshadowing a key symbolic date. Success in Kursk would undo Russia’s gains from March and April and serve as a morale-boosting milestone for Ukrainian forces ...  the newest incursion into Kursk is not an isolated action, but a deliberate continuation of Ukraine’s border pressure campaign. Combined with the earlier Belgorod operation, it represents a clear attempt to overstretch Russian military capacity, disrupt reinforcements to Eastern Ukraine, and deny the Russian command any breathing room.

False flag event in Belgorod.  The Russians just happened to have a high def camera filming at the moment of impact.  One drone.  No damage.  Nothing else hit.

New Drone Boat Unveiled At Special Operations Conference In Afterglow Of Ukrainian Success
The Kraken3 Scout Medium is designed for one-way attacks, counter-drone missions and cargo and personnel delivery.
https://www.twz.com/sea/new-drone-boat-unveiled-at-special-operations-conference-in-afterglow-of-ukrainian-success

Using AV’s proprietary “HaloSwarm” collaborative autonomy system, Kraken3 Scout can operate fully autonomously or with man-in-the-loop ... The boat is a so-called “marsupial” USV, with two different compartments designed to carry a variety of payloads. In Tampa, it carried AV’s Titan 4 RF detect and defeat counter-drone system ...

The Kraken3 can also carry “a lot” of AV’s Switchblade 600 and 300 drones ... The Kraken3 has four cameras that are just for situational awareness and a user-configurable sensor ball gimbal ... This can be a FLIR or any number of other camera systems around the top for spotting longer range ... in use right now are Starlink long-range, HF and 2.4 ... It can also run over cellular networks. Depends how we have it configured.

No link provided:

“Keir Starmer has issued an ultimatum to Russia, saying that Europe and the U.S. will jointly increase military aid to Ukraine unless Putin agrees to Trump’s 30-day-ceasefire.”

Also, the new sanctions are in play - Trump-style.

Europe, in coordination with the USA, are now “demanding” a Russian ceasefire. Sounds like Russia is set up to get hit with the Trump sanctions punch soon, if they refuse a ceasefire.

I don’t think that this war has much longer to run.

Kyiv Independent reports:

“Ukraine and its European allies are demanding that Russia agree to an unconditional 30-day ceasefire starting on May 12, President Volodymyr Zelensky said on May 10 during a press conference in Kyiv…

…”We (France, the U.K., Germany and Poland) agreed that a full and unconditional ceasefire must begin on Monday, May 12, for at least 30 days. We jointly demand this from Russia, and we know we are supported in this by the United States,” Zelensky said, as reported by a correspondent from European Pravda.

“The ceasefire must be comprehensive — in the air, at sea, and on land. Monitoring the ceasefire is entirely feasible in coordination with the United States. This is a realistic goal.”

Starmer also confirmed that Ukraine’s European allies would not ease any sanctions against Russia until a result had been achieved.

Ahead of the press conference, the five leaders held a phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said the call was “productive,” adding that all allies are ready for a complete unconditional ceasefire on land, in the air, and at sea for at least 30 days, starting as early as Monday…

…Zelensky and European leaders said during the press conference that the threat of tougher sanctions could help not only to pressure Russia into agreeing to an unconditional ceasefire, but also serve as a deterrent against any potential ceasefire violations.

“If Russia refuses an unconditional and complete ceasefire, sanctions must be applied — strengthened sanctions against its energy sector and banking system,” Zelensky said.

Tusk confirmed that if Russia “takes the proposal lightly,” then it would be met with “a new wave of sanctions,” stressing that coordination with the U.S. was key to achieving an effective approach to peace talks.

Amid reported growing frustration with a lack of a peace deal, Trump called for an “unconditional” 30-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine on May 8, adding that “if the ceasefire is not respected, the U.S. and its partners will impose further sanctions (against Russia).””

Ukraine’s Guerrilla Drone Warfare is Spurring a US Military Shift

Every Ukrainian frontline drone is piloted by someone whose expertise has evolved with the rise of FPVs and, by 2025, fiber-optic drones. Their battlefield insights are now shaping the behemoth that is the US defense industry. Can the Pentagon keep up with Ukrainian drone operators?

Lucile Brizard  |  May 09, 2025  |  19:10

A Russian soldier lying in a muddy field tilts his head up, eyeing the camera. He is looking at a hovering Ukrainian drone, its bird’s-eye view drifting left to right. The soldier crosses his arms, indicating surrender. The drone drops water and a note, and then slowly leads the soldier out of the trench. Minutes later, Ukrainian soldiers take him in. He’s given medical care, then sent to a POW camp.

Three years into Russia’s full-scale war in Ukraine, drones have transformed into sophisticated tools with the potential to replace soldiers on the battlefield. As photographer Tyler Hicks told the New York Times, his 2022 shot of soldiers atop a tank in Bakhmut would be impossible today.

In fact, Ukraine built over 2.2 million FPV drones in 2024 alone and is, as of today, the top producer of FPV drones in the world. Ukrainian officials project that the number could rise to as much as 10 million annually, depending on resource availability. Ukraine was also the first to establish an entire branch, the Unmanned Systems Forces, dedicated solely to drone warfare.

How the US is catching up
Ukraine began modifying DJI Phantom 4 drones to drop F-1 grenades back in 2014, a tactic that gained prominence during the Russian invasion. Fast-forward to January 2025: the US formed its own Marine Corps Attack Drone Team (MCADT) citing “lessons learned from Ukraine.” American officers have since debriefed Ukrainian soldiers and studied their tactics to close the growing gap.

“We’ve got to learn how to use drones, how to fight with them, how to scale them, produce them, and employ them in our fights so we can see beyond line of sight,” said Colonel Donald Neal, commander of the US 2nd Cavalry Regiment.  .  .  .

Ukraine Reports Russian Airstrikes Despite Victory Day Ceasefire Declaration

Liubava Petriv  |  May 09, 2025  |  23:42

Despite Russia’s announcement of a temporary ceasefire from May 8 to 11 in observance of Victory Day, Ukrainian officials say fighting has continued across several regions of the front line.

Ukraine’s Air Force spokesperson Yuriy Ihnat said Russian forces continued airstrikes using guided aerial bombs across multiple regions, including Sumy, Donetsk, and Zaporizhzhia region.

Ihnat told Ukrainska Pravda on May 9 that Russian forces launched around 130 guided bombs on May 9, Ihnat noted that around 130 bombs were launched on May 8 alone, primarily targeting Sumy region, which borders Russia’s Bryansk, Kursk, and Belgorod regions.

Strikes reportedly continued on May 9, with 56 more guided bombs launched by midday, largely from Su-34 aircraft supported by Su-35 fighters. The Air Force also observed nearly a dozen Russian aircraft operating near the front line.  .  .  .

Excerpts from the video transcript:

Victory Day Chaos! Hundreds of drones wreak havoc on Moscow!

Today [ May 9, 8 pm ], there is an interesting update from the Russian Federation. Here, Ukraine launched a wave after wave of massive drone attacks against Moscow and other targets in the days leading up to Russia’s Victory Day celebrations on the 9th of May. These strikes have penetrated the Russian air defense, set massive fires, and revealed severe vulnerabilities of the Russian military, sending a powerful message both domestically and internationally.

Over recent nights, the Russian capital has faced repeated drone attacks. The non-stop strikes started on the 5th of May, and the Russian Ministry of Defense later stated that 105 drones had been intercepted across the country during that night alone. At least 2 drones were also shot down near Podolsk in the Moscow suburbs, where air defense missiles reportedly crashed into residential buildings, highlighting the reason why anti-air systems should not be deployed in the middle of densely populated areas ... Moscow’s main airports, Sheremetyevo, Vnukovo, and Domodedovo, were shut down for hours, with similar disruptions reported at airports in other Russian towns, affecting the direct routes of the visiting world leaders. This coincided with the scheduled arrival of Chinese President Xi Jinping, but regular Russian airlines were also forced to cancel 100s of flights due to the ongoing disruptions ...

More importantly, these strikes are a part of an extensive Ukrainian campaign serving several important goals:
Firstly, Ukrainian drones are likely attempting to strike military targets gathered near the capital for the Victory Day parade ...
Secondly, as over 450 drones were reportedly launched during one night, the scale of these drone attacks is forcing Russia to reposition even more air defense systems toward Moscow, despite they already brought 280 such assets ...
Thirdly, these attacks undermine the Russian government’s narrative of control and military superiority ...
Lastly, the Ukrainian drone strikes could also aim to exhaust Russian air defense stockpiles by sustaining a high operational tempo over several days ...

Overall, Ukraine’s drone campaign is more than just a show of force, it is a deliberate, multifaceted strategy designed to expose Russian weaknesses, disrupt military logistics, and challenge the Russian image of control during what Putin positions as the most important holiday ... By exploiting the Russian concentration of air defenses in and around Moscow Ukraine creates dangerous coverage gaps elsewhere. If Russian commanders continue to redeploy assets to protect against a possible Victory Day embarrassment, they may find themselves exposed in other vital regions and it will be too late to adjust.

Excerpts from the video transcript:

Spectacular Failure: 4 Vectors, 46 Assaults, Zero Survivors!

Today [ May 10, 8 pm ], there are a lot of interesting updates from the Velyka Novosilka direction. Here, Russian forces launched one of their largest attacks near Velyka Novosilka. What followed was a brutal engagement that would turn their ambitious assault into a devastating spectacle of failure. The goal of the Russian forces is to expand the area under their control along the elevated positions northwest of Velyka Novosilka to support their broader offensive towards the border of the Dnipro Oblast. To achieve this, the Russians launched synergistic attacks from 4 vectors of assault at Rivnopil, Vilno Pole, and a 2-pronged attack at Novosilka. These assaults were launched simultaneously, and with effective coordination among the Russian units to exert heavy pressure on the defense line and expose its weakest points ... The main disadvantage for the Russian forces in this area is the Vorona river and the nearby lake, which diminish the mobility and speed of their motorcycle assault units, due to the softer terrain around the water, and reduces the synergies and coordination between different attacking groups ...

However, the Ukrainian-held high ground in front of Novopil is the highest point of the ridge, which exposes Russian flanks at Novosilka to ATGMs, machine-guns, artillery and drone strikes from the Ukrainian-held high ground. The hill ridge at Novopil, therefore, is tactically used by Ukrainians for the defense of both Novosilka and Novopil ... combat footage from the area reveals the devastating precision of 31st Mechanized Brigade, which cautiously tracked and destroyed Russian BTRs, spending just one shell for each vehicle in front of Novopil ... the Russian fighters attempted to compensate for their exposure to fire in the open fields, by using motorcycles to deploy their soldiers ... they were swiftly eliminated by FPV drones as soon as they stopped and dismounted from the motorbikes. By carefully observing the movement of their targets and striking them when they are the most vulnerable and exposed, ensures that the Ukrainians eliminate the Russians with one blow.

The Russian soldiers attacking towards Vilno Pole were less exposed to crossfire due to elevated ridges ... they were eliminated before they entrenched. The Ukrainian artillery was also adjusted to fire at the main roads leading to the villages, so as soon as the drone operators reported Russians moving into Novosilka, Novopil and Vilno Pole, they were ready to fire. Overall, Russian forces launched a coordinated multi-vector assault near Velyka Novosilka, aiming to capitalize on elevated terrain and numerical superiority, but were met with devastating Ukrainian fire, which inflicted heavy losses and disrupted their advance ... Given the current stalemate and the challenges posed by Ukrainian defenses, it is likely that Russia will intensify its efforts in this sector, to reach the borders of Dnipro region, potentially leading to further intensifications in the coming weeks.

Vladimir Putin's offer of direct talks with Ukraine is the latest attempt to avoid committing to a 30-day ceasefire

The build-up to this announcement was extremely strange. The proposal for direct talks with Ukraine felt like it had been hastily cobbled together.

Ivor Bennett  |  11 May 2025  |  03:09, UK

The Kremlin billed this as a meaningful statement from Vladimir Putin but how much does it actually mean?

His comments are exactly the same as what Moscow has been saying for weeks, only repackaged with a date. The latest attempt to avoid committing to a 30-day ceasefire.

Next Thursday - 15 May - is when he's proposing to hold direct talks with Ukraine. Only then, he says, can they discuss the details of a longer truce.

Istanbul is apparently the venue. The trouble is, Turkey doesn't appear to know about it. The Russian leader said he'd call President Erdogan tomorrow.

Given America's apparent support for Europe's ultimatum to Russia (ceasefire or sanctions), he had to respond with something new. But this felt like a proposal that had been hastily cobbled together in the corridor outside.

The build-up to this announcement was extremely strange. We were told it would be a press conference  .  .  .

Putin announced this via a late-night broadcast which is never done in Russia.  Putin is reacting, which indicates that he has been caught off balance.  That's a good thing.  Europe and the US are becoming unified which is what Putin has been desperately trying to break.

Erdogan in Turkey is also friendly with Putin, so Turkey is hardly an honest broker.  Plus, it'd love to get some of its old Ottoman territory back in the Black Sea.

Russia's “Immortal Regiment” Online Parade Just Got Immortally Trolled

On the Russian “Бессмертный полк онлайн” (Immortal Regiment Online) website, users began noticing some very suspicious veterans honored among the WWII heroes.

Alongside actual Soviet veterans, appeared the likes of Trampin, Vitkov, Budyonny, Malyk, Parmezanov and other… less conventional names. Whether this was the work of hackers or just Russians being Russians remains unclear.

But let's not forget: in 2014, Kremlin-controlled media seriously published photos of Eminem, Sasha Grey, Adolf Hitler, and even Stepan Bandera as so-called “Russian heroes killed by Ukrainians in Donbas”. Yes - they literally claimed Eminem was a victim of Ukrainian aggression.

Ukrainians Ambush Sleeping Russian Soldiers!

Today [ May 11, 8 pm ], there are a lot of important updates from the Pokrovsk direction. Here, under the cover of darkness, Ukrainian forces launched sudden night raids near Uspenivka, including a high-speed machine gun drive-by that stunned Russian troops ... The goal of the Russian forces in this area is to collapse the Ukrainian positions south of Novoserhiivka by cutting off their logistics. The capture of this area would allow the Russians to widen their bridgehead and protect their logistics by establishing stable defenses along the Solona river, exploiting the most vulnerable part of the Ukrainian defense...

The main tactical disadvantages of the Russian forces are their poor logistics, due to a lack of proper infrastructure to deploy a meaningful number of infantrymen, let alone mechanized units ... because the bridge connecting the Russian bridgehead in Uspenivka with their rear positions, was destroyed during the fighting, forcing them to conduct their entire assault on foot. Russian forces would need to cross exposed fields and the 50-meter-wide Solona River to reach Novoserhiivka, but Ukrainian surveillance of bridges forces them to attempt slower crossings through marshes, increasing detection risk.

These conditions make success unlikely ... deployment of a domestically-made Ukrainian BTR-4E Bucephalus infantry fighting vehicle at night, just a few minutes after the Russian assault group was detected near the Solona river ... crews of BTR-4Es to use the heavy firepower of their 30-millimeter auto-cannons whose more destructive ammo and rate of fire decimated the Russian infantry units and their positions, inflicting severe losses ... additional BTR-4Es arrived with several infantry squads that dismounted and engaged in small arms fire with suppressed Russian units that were starved off ammunition ... forced the Russians  to withdraw due to heavy losses  and inability to advance, sustaining yet another failure at improving their positions on the western flank of Pokrovsk.

Overall, the Russians gambled with a risky operation to reach Novoserhiivka and cut off the key Ukrainian logistics for expansion of their positions on the western flank of Pokrovsk, only to be swiftly dealt with and eliminated by the Ukrainian forces ... Russians understand that in order to conduct their main offensive towards Pokrovsk they must first secure their logistics on their western flank of the city, which is why they will persist with assaults here and intensify them.
