Russian President Vladimir Putin said in comments broadcast on Sunday said that the need to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine had not arisen, and that he hoped it would not arise.

The proper diplomatic response here is to iterate that the need to use nuclear weapons in Russia had not arisen, and that we hoped it would not arise.

What???

I've been told he was elected and the protector of the people!

How does he get to choose who his successor is if he's "elected". That's what elections are for...

The lies people want to believe all the while demanding Ukraine hold elections in the middle of a war for their survival.

Flashback:  Victory Parade 2023

Veterans at Putin’s Side for Victory Parade Did Not Fight in WWII

May 10, 2023

Russian President Vladimir Putin (C) attends the Victory Day parade on Red Square.

The two military veterans seated next to President Vladimir Putin at Tuesday’s Victory Day parade on Red Square did not fight in World War II, the Agentsvo investigative outlet reported.

Putin is traditionally flanked by World War II veterans on Victory Day, which celebrates the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in 1945 with a massive military procession aimed at rallying patriotic fervor.

This year, however, he was seated between former members of the Soviet secret police, Agentsvo reported.

Seated at Putin’s right was former NKVD agent Yuri Dvoikin, 98, who was deployed to western Ukraine’s Lviv region in 1944 to “carry out operations to liquidate” Ukrainian partisans.  .  .  .

These would be the same Ukrainian partisans who had been fighting against the Nazis for the previous 2½ years.

Russian economy meltdown as gas and electricity bills soar 40% and mortgage rates rocket

Jon King  •  23h

Russia is on course for a "painful economic squeeze" with energy bills set to soar 40% by 2028, stubbornly high inflation and real wages stagnating, a Ukrainian former central banker has said. Kyrylo Shevchenko, a former Head of the National Bank of Ukraine, claimed gas bills would rise more than 76% since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

He didn't point to a source for his claim, which was posted on X on Friday (May 2) and included a further prediction that "sharp hikes" in the cost of gas, electricity and housing overall would soar 40% in three years. Mr Shevchenko said: "With real wages stagnating and inflation rising, Russians will pay more for less - while the Kremlin pours billions into war.

"To make matters worse, Russia slashed its 2025 oil price forecast to $56/barrel - the lowest since COVID-19. Russia is burning through its future to sustain war. And of course, the people are footing the bill". Russian media reports also suggest a sharp rise in people defaulting on their mortgages and consumer loans in the first three months of the year.

The Moscow Times reports that the volume of mortgage loans showing signs of distress between January and March surged 90% at Sverbank to reach £2.6billion (285bn rubles).

Overdue consumer loans increased 22.5% to £5.6bn (610bn rubles), according to the same publication.

Russia's rate of inflation rose to 10.3% in March, according to Trading Economics, and the country's central bank warned that it could continue to increase.

Food inflation stood at 12.4% with the rate of fruit and veg price rises a staggering 18.9%, spelling misery for Russian consumers.

Russia's inflation remains stubbornly high despite interest rate hikes by the country's central bank. In April, the Bank of Russia kept its key rate at 21%, warning that monetary policy would remain tight as demand was still "significantly" outstripping the supply of goods and services.  .  .  .

Putin spoke about a successor for the first time."

Кремлевская табакерка/Kremlin Secrets/Kremlin Snuffbox

Why did Putin suddenly start talking about a successor?

Vladimir Putin made a statement about a successor in a long-awaited film. Frankly speaking, the topic of a successor is fertile ground for conspiracy theorists, but it is a completely different situation when the president speaks about it in the first person. “It is no secret that Vladimir Vladimirovich is a kind of arbitrator for large groups of influence. Everyone understands who is close to whom, who is in contact with whom. But at the same time, it is absolutely clear that these groups of influence are constantly holding a kind of casting for the role of successor,” said our influential interlocutor.

Another source notes that quite well-known names in Russia are often heard. Mishustin, Dyumin, Patrushev Jr., but not only them. The list is quite large. “It is important for Vladimir Vladimirovich to create a stable system. But at the same time, there is a difficult story with economic factors that influence this,” said a source in the Presidential Administration. influential interlocutor in Vladimir Putin's entourage suggested that in fact the statement was not voiced just like that.

“This looks more like a trap for those who see themselves as successors. Now we'll see how the traitors will show themselves,” the source said

Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment, May 3, 2025

Excerpts:
Russian President Vladimir Putin indicated that Russia maintains the initial objectives of its war in Ukraine, which are tantamount to Ukraine’s surrender, despite ongoing negotiations with the United States. Kremlin journalist Pavel Zarubin published a documentary on Russian state TV channel Rossiya 1 about Putin on May 4, in which Putin claimed that Russia has enough manpower and materiel to bring the war in Ukraine to its “logical conclusion with the result that Russia needs.”

Putin also claimed that Russian reconciliation with the Ukrainian part of the Russian people is “inevitable.” Putin has repeatedly claimed that the Ukrainian people are simply a subset of Russians rather than a distinctly separate nation to justify Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the occupation of Ukrainian territory and people.

Russian state media notably highlighted that Putin has previously made the false claim that Russians and Ukrainians are one people.

Putin’s statements indicate that Russia continues to assess that it can achieve its original objectives of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which include demilitarizing Ukraine, installing a pro-Russian government in Ukraine, forcing Ukraine to abandon its aspirations to join NATO and other security blocs, and forcing Ukraine to make massive territorial concessions to Russia, including parts of Ukraine that Russia does not currently occupy.

These demands amount to Ukraine’s full capitulation. Russia will likely continue efforts to achieve these goals through military and diplomatic means, as Russian officials continue attempts to leverage battlefield gains to strengthen their negotiating position.

Putin highlighted domestic support for the war and promoted the ideal of sacrifice on the frontline and the home front, likely in an effort to prepare Russian society for a longer war in Ukraine and potential future confrontations with the West. Putin told Zarubin that Russian society reacted positively to the invasion of Ukraine and that each citizen realized that “he is the state” and Russia’s survival depends on each individual.

Putin stated that Russia is a country of “moral and ethical values” and that the basis of the Russian conscience is “the family, the state, and the future of Russia.”

Putin is notably attempting to frame the Russian public’s support for the war through shared values despite the Kremlin’s reliance on financial incentives to recruit the majority of its military personnel and to maintain its war effort.

Putin accused the West once again of “deceiving” Russia following the 2015 Minsk agreements, likely in an effort to convince the Russian domestic audience that Russia cannot negotiate with the West and needs to continue the war.

Putin’s statements throughout the documentary indicate that Putin likely does not intend to slow offensive operations or transition to defensive operations in Ukraine and instead is attempting to ideologically prepare domestic Russian society for a long war. ISW has previously assessed that Russian officials are setting conditions to maintain a long war and to justify future aggression against Ukraine and NATO.

Russian officials have also consistently intensified efforts to militarize Russian society since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, further indicating that Russia is preparing for a protracted conflict. Russian officials are engaged in long-term efforts to consolidate control over Russia’s veteran civil society and elevate a cadre of loyal veterans to positions in Russia’s regional and federal government.

Putin officially declared 2025 the “Year of the Defender of the Fatherland,” following the launch of myriad militaristic initiatives in 2023 and 2024 to provide veterans with social and financial support and reinforce the Russian state narrative that veterans are the new “elite” class.

Russia is also investing heavily in military-patriotic education for Russia’s youth, demonstrating the Kremlin’s interest in creating a new generation of militarized, loyal citizens in the medium to long term.

Reporting From Ukraine:
https://www.youtube.com/@RFU/videos

Excerpts from the video transcript:

Entire Russian Column Obliterated by Explosions!

Today [ May 4, 8 pm ], there are a lot of interesting updates from the Pokrovsk direction. Here, in the open fields southeast of Pokrovsk, Russian forces are desperate to push Ukrainians back and salvage what little is left of their logistics. However, as specialized Ukrainian equipment prevents Russians from even launching their assaults, Russian wrecks and bodies are quickly piling up, leading to another disaster for the Russian army. The goal of the Russian forces is to advance north of their positions in Nadiivka across open fields to consolidate positions along the Solona River. The 1st attempts to expand their control here, in the direction of Uspenivka, proved to be complete failures, as Russian corpses litter the approaches ... Russian supply lines are not as exposed and in a fire pocket as in the western pincer, meaning that Russians can employ armored vehicles without them being intercepted by Ukrainian drone and artillery fire along the way ...

... the Ukrainian forces are employing remote mining techniques to scatter landmines in the fields between them and the Russians ... Ukrainians use heavy octocopter drones to carry and lay landmines on roads and chokepoints to further enhance and replenish the minefields ... Russian armored units struggled to continue their attacks due to landmines. BMP infantry fighting vehicles, poorly armored against anything beyond small arms fire, were obliterated by landmines that detonated their internal ammunition, killing all aboard ... the Ukrainians sought to prevent more Russian units from coming their way, knowing that they would eventually try to advance by overwhelming the Ukrainians with sheer numbers through heaps of destroyed metal and blood ...

The Russians heavily rely on the town of Selydove for logistical support, where they station all of their tanks, armored vehicles, soldiers and ammunition ... Unfortunately for Russians, this made it the best place for the Ukrainians to scatter their landmines to prevent Russians from launching their assaults ... the landmines destroyed up to 6 other wrecks lay which were scattered around the same crossing, indicating that Ukrainians are constantly replenishing these minefields after Russians cleared them one way or another. When still trying to conduct larger assaults, Russians moved in with platoon-sized formations of 3 vehicles closely grouped together. However, these formations consistently drove onto landmines, one after another, which led to the destruction of the entire assault formations. Additionally, the Russians deployed many of their infantrymen in unarmored vehicles, resulting in the deaths of entire infantry squads from a single landmine.

... the constant Ukrainian remote mining operations are posing a major obstacle to these offensive plans as well, disrupting Russian assaults, dealing high losses, and often preventing them from launching outright. With whole minefields suddenly appearing on previously cleared roads, Russian efforts here have been stumped, as soon this area will be impassible for Russian armored vehicles as well.

Anton Gerashchenko
@Gerashchenko_en  ·  11h

During the parade in Moscow on May 9th, Russia will celebrate a slightly different victory than Europe - it will celebrate victory in the Great Patriotic War. This is an important distinction, so I thought I'd  explain this further.

Russia's collective memory separates World  War II and the Great Patriotic War (as Soviet, then Russian historians  have called it).

The Great Patriotic War (GPW) began on 22nd June, 1941 and ended on 9th May, 1945. Russia calls this war "sacred" and draws many of its current narratives from it. Russians are firmly  convinced it was solely the USSR that won the war and that only the USSR suffered (or at least suffered the most) in WWII.

The "GPW" was a  tragedy of an enormous scale to the USSR - it lost 24-27 million of its  population, a large part of the country was in ruins, the economy was  devastated. A lot of it was actually due to USSR leaders not caring  about losses and people's suffering. As we now know, the USSR would not have achieved military advantage and would suffer even more without the  help of the Allied powers and the lend-lease program from the United  States, although Russia conveniently omits that in its victory day hysterics.

Putin has built a Victory cult in Russia during his reign. Some experts call it "victory delirium" (this is a loose  translation). Victory has become a cornerstone of the Russian propaganda and a fetish in and of itself. Putin used that rhetoric to justify the Russian invasion into Ukraine - he says Russia is fighting against "Nazis" again, this time in Ukraine. When Russians talk about the war,  their motto is "We can repeat that!" - meaning that Russian soldiers can  once more march through Europe. You've probably heard Russian  propagandist Solovyev's claims to "remain in Berlin this time".

This is a true cult of war that militarizes children (see videos attached to  this post), omits inconvenient truths and feeds the state propaganda machine. During that parade, Russians will not mourn the millions of victims of the war. They will not strive for peace - they will glorify  the "Russian military might" and threaten other countries with missile and nuclear strikes.

Russia has perverted a day of remembrance, mourning and reflection into a filthy instrument of state propaganda.

Ukraine Could Snap Up US Bradley-Based Armored Vehicles as Pentagon Cuts Production

Vlad Litnarovych  |  May 05, 2025  |  16:52

Ukraine could buy the US-made Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicle (AMPV), Ukrainian defense outlet Defense Express reported, citing a letter obtained by Breaking Defense from Glenn Dean, Executive Director for Ground Combat Systems on May 3.

The Pentagon is canceling or downsizing several major programs once central to its armored vehicle fleet. Among them are the M10 Booker light tank, the ongoing competition for a new self-propelled howitzer, and further procurement of Stryker vehicles, Humvees, and JLTVs.

Importantly, the letter also notes that production of the AMPV —a turretless version of the Bradley Fighting Vehicle built by BAE Systems will be reduced.

“AMPV production will be reduced to a minimum sustainment rate but mitigated by Ukraine buyback,” the letter says.  .  .
