Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky angered Donald Trump so much during the peace talks with Russia that Trump was on the verge of withdrawing American military support from Ukraine, three U.S. officials familiar with the discussions tell Axios.

Why it matters: The conflict between Trump and Zelensky escalated into a war of words between the two that scared European allies who are worried about emboldening Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and rewarding his brutal expansionism.
  • "President Trump is obviously very frustrated right now with President Zelensky," National Security Advisor Mike Waltz said Thursday at the White House press briefing.
The big picture: Trump and Zelensky have had an awkward relationship ever since Trump was impeached in 2019 for trying to leverage U.S. military aid to the war-torn country in return for Zelensky having Joe Biden's son investigated over his sinecure with a Ukrainian gas company.
  • Today, Trump is finding it more difficult than expected to make good on his pledge to quickly implement a deal to end the Russia-Ukraine war.

Zoom in: Six administration officials tell Axios that during the past nine days there were five incidents that angered Trump, Vice President Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Waltz. Taken together, one administration official said, Zelensky "showed how not to do the 'Art of the Deal' " when it came to courting Trump's support:

The meeting started off badly when dress decorum was dissed by Z.  Trump likes respect in the Oval Office, and no suit just does not cut it.

Trump is dead wrong here. He and Hedgpeth went into their 'negotiations' being hostile to Ukraine and demanding that Ukraine capitulate to Russia and with zero security assurances for Ukraine.

Would the United States accept such a deal?

Further the lesson every country in the world gets from this is to never give up their nuclear weapons based on bullshit promises from the US or Russia.

First of all Trump was absolutely correct in the way that he handled Z.  Z has become obnoxious and disrespectful.  This is the 2nd time that he has lied to Secy of State Rubio as well.

As for nukes .... I don't trust Z and if he doesn't have them by now ... he just paddled up the wrong river; as Russia nor China is going to sit idly by now.  Z just put another huge target on his country and possibly just started WWIII.

Let it go.  It was Joe Biden’s responsibility to stop the invasion before it happened.  He chose to be a belligerent Irishman, so the Ukraine fought a bloody war and lost.  Now Trump needs to help negotiate a peace, to the extent Zelensky is interested in doing so.

Why? Ukraine used to be a nuclear power. If they'd had nukes in 2014 instead of worthless security assurances from the US & Russia then there never would have been a war.

If they want security now then they need to handle it and the best way to assure their future sovereignty against a nuclear armed invader is to build their own nuclear weapons.

Not really true as I have seen him in suits at the WH, but I think he mostly does not.

I will say though Musk is not a visiting foreign dignitary begging for help from the USA.

Trump is a f_cking Russia worshipper.  What a f_cking disappointment.  One would think that even a person of average intelligence could tell the difference between a man leading his country in a fight for its life and its freedom and a crackpot dictator who thinks he can roll over his neighbors, slaughter their civilians, and get the West’s blessing.
