I just had a lengthy and highly productive phone call with President Vladimir Putin of Russia. We discussed Ukraine, the Middle East, Energy, Artificial Intelligence, the power of the Dollar, and various other subjects. We both reflected on the Great History of our Nations, and the fact that we fought so successfully together in World War II, remembering, that Russia lost tens of millions of people, and we, likewise, lost so many! We each talked about the strengths of our respective Nations, and the great benefit that we will someday have in working together. But first, as we both agreed, we want to stop the millions of deaths taking place in the War with Russia/Ukraine. President Putin even used my very strong Campaign motto of, “COMMON SENSE.” We both believe very strongly in it. We agreed to work together, very closely, including visiting each other’s Nations. We have also agreed to have our respective teams start negotiations immediately, and we will begin by calling President Zelenskyy, of Ukraine, to inform him of the conversation, something which I will be doing right now. I have asked Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Director of the CIA John Ratcliffe, National Security Advisor Michael Waltz, and Ambassador and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, to lead the negotiations which, I feel strongly, will be successful. Millions of people have died in a War that would not have happened if I were President, but it did happen, so it must end. No more lives should be lost! I want to thank President Putin for his time and effort with respect to this call, and for the release, yesterday, of Marc Fogel, a wonderful man that I personally greeted last night at the White House. I believe this effort will lead to a successful conclusion, hopefully soon!

President Donald Trump said he had a "lengthy" call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday, which included Putin agreeing to "immediately" begin negotiations over the war in Ukraine.

"We agreed to work together, very closely, including visiting each other’s Nations," Trump posted to Truth Social on Wednesday. "We have also agreed to have our respective teams start negotiations immediately, and we will begin by calling President Zelenskyy, of Ukraine, to inform him of the conversation, something which I will be doing right now. I have asked Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Director of the CIA John Ratcliffe, National Security Advisor Michael Waltz, and Ambassador and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, to lead the negotiations which, I feel strongly, will be successful."

Russia and Ukraine have been at war since February 2022, when Russia first invaded its neighboring nation.

I think this is an exercise where President Trump will shine.  He knows how to bring folks to a table and arrive at mutual benefit decisions.  Putin is in a pitiful position at present.  Russia is on the verge of a 1991 collapse.  Trump knows this, will leverage this with Putin's team.  So what if Putin flatters Trump.  Trump has one mission, end the war, and end it in such a way that both sides save some face.

There is no way Russia will give up all the lands it currently occupies in Ukraine.  They will not give up any part of the Crimea.   Not going to happen.  And I suspect at most, Russia will withdraw from about half the land Russia seized on the eastern part of Ukraine.

If anyone can end this war, it will be Trump.  Neither Russia nor Ukraine will get everything they presently want.  Trump will force them to give on both sides, and in seeking peace, both countries can move forward in restoring their nations.  I see Ukraine giving up all Russian lands seized if Russia gives up about half of the lands seized by Russia.

Trump has already gotten Zelensky to share in the rich mineral fields of eastern Ukraine, currently held by Russia.  Trump will convince Zelensky that half of what you had and peace is a better proposition than continuing to wage war.    I am sure Trump has promised to help Ukraine rebuild the country and more importantly rebuild and strengthen the military to prevent future attacks by Russia.

Knowing Trump, I would bet he told his folks to make it happen within six months timeframe.  Look for a solution by August/September.

Ukraine may not end up in NATO, but they will receive direct training from US military forces, wis ill receive some of the finest US military equipment to strengthen their defensive capabilities, etc.  When all said and done, I would not be surprised if Ukraine ends up with one of the best fighting forces in Europe.

i believe Rubio is confusing two different events.  Where did the $500 billion number come from?  If Zelenskiy was the originator of that figure, then Rubio has a valid point.

That $500 billion number came from Trump, as usual.  And I think they tried to do another "bait and switch" on Zelensky but he read the fine print and said "no way!" Vance and Rubio promised security guarantees in the verbal deal but those weren't included in the document that Kellogg presented to Zelensky.

REPORTER: Diplomacy is great when both sides want peace. But when one side just wants a "pause" to recharge, that's not diplomacy - that's setting up for the next invasion.

HEGSETH: So you're saying no negotiations, just endless war?

REPORTER: No, I'm saying that a peace agreement where only one side makes sacrifices is not peace - that's a better saying for surrender.
