Early reports are that it was a Learjet, possibly a Mexican air ambulance?  Looks like a missile coming in, in the videos I've seen.

Edit: crash was near Roosevelt Mall, in Northeast Philadelphia.

Fox29 reporting the plane was a Learjet air ambulance registered in Mexico, had just taken off from Philadelphia airport, carrying two pilots, two doctors, a patient and family member (6 souls on board total).

Good point, still puzzled this thing seems to be accelerating like a missle as it crashes.  A mid air explosion would seem more likely to cause the craft to fall under normal gravational forces.

Was the craft commandeered?

Just wondering why a medical flight (apparently originating in Philly) would be headed halfway across the country to Springfield, which isn't known for being any kind of medical mecca. No Mayo Clinic or anything like that.

Springfield is the site of the Medical Center for Federal Prisoners.

A possibility on an air ambulance...Improperly secured, all sorts of things can happen, including that tank bouncing around like a missile in the cabin if the valve is broken off. (I saw that in the steel plant I worked in, and that one had a lot of room to bounce around).

Exactly..I was surprised they were headed there not really a huge town and in the middle of nowhere...maybe they are taking the patient home..was treated in Philly

Springfield is the site of the Medical Center for Federal Prisoners.

Maybe they planned to stop there to refuel on their way to Mexico? Just speculating, I don't know what the flight range of a Learjet 55 (reportedly the type of plane that crashed) is. The plane was supposedly registered in Mexico, so they might have been taking someone home from Philadelphia?  :shrug:

There's been mixed reports on how many were on the plane. Some say 6 others say 2.
