Songwriter Roger Nichols dies at 84

Nichols was a prominent soft rock songwriter in the 1970s as a collaborator with songwriter Paul Williams. Nichols and Williams wrote several hit songs for the Carpenters, including "We've Only Just Begun," "Rainy Days and Mondays" and "I Won't Last a Day Without You;" among other records by Paul Anka ("Times of Your Life," which Nichols co-wrote with Bill Lane) and Three Dog Night ("Out in the Country"). His brother Ted Nichols was also a songwriter, writing TV scores for Hanna-Barbera cartoons.

Nichols died May 17.

It's always amazing to me when I see the age of the actors that have passed.

I guess since the shows they starred in are still on tv they remain in my mind at the age they were then.

RIP Hot Lips.

Sly Stone, pioneering funk and soul musician, dies aged 82
American songwriter lit up generations of dancefloors with his group Sly and the Family Stone

Sly Stone, the American musician who lit up generations of dancefloors with his gloriously funky and often socially conscious songwriting, has died aged 82.

“After a prolonged battle with COPD and other underlying health issues, Sly passed away peacefully, surrounded by his three children, his closest friend and his extended family,” a family statement reads. “While we mourn his absence, we take solace in knowing that his extraordinary musical legacy will continue to resonate and inspire for generations to come.”

With his group Sly and the Family Stone, Stone tied together soul, psychedelic rock and gospel into fervent, uplifting songs, and became one of the key progenitors of the 1970s funk sound alongside James Brown and others. ...

RIP Mr. Wilson I enjoyed your music, may you find the peace with our Lord that you lacked in life.

He was a true musical genius, but was beaten by his frustrated and jealous father Murray, developed severe depression and a bad drug habit, became morbidly obese and was a hermit for a long time, and finally recovered and re-captured some of his early glory.  He was an amazing composer and musician!

Brian Wilson, Beach Boys Songwriter and Visionary, Dead at 82

https://www.remindmagazine.com/article/30974/brian-wilson-beach-boys-songwriter-dead/

Quote
But in contrast to Wilson’s gifted songwriting and the sunny image projected by the group’s songs, Wilson, the group’s leader, principal songwriter and arranger, was haunted by the abuse he suffered under his father and he was plagued by self-doubt. At the height of his powers, while working on the follow-up to Pet Sounds, the much-hyped and breathlessly anticipated Smile, Wilson suffered a nervous breakdown. The album would remain unfinished and become one of the greatest “lost” albums of the classic rock era until 2004, when Wilson, in a moment of personal triumph, would release the album under his own name to great critical and popular acclaim.

Wilson’s fragile mental health and his road to recovery were the stuff of legend. Famously, in the ’70s, his depression would lead him to spend the better part of three years in bed. His work with the Beach Boys during this era was sporadic but often memorable, reflecting a troubled genius in turmoil. In addition to alcohol and substance abuse issues and the deterioration of his marriage to Marilyn Rovell, ending in divorce in 1979, Wilson would endure lawsuits from his bandmates, and pressure to return to the studio and the stage. He eventually ended up in the care of a highly unorthodox psychologist, Eugene Landy. Landy’s extreme methods helped Wilson to regain his physical health, but at a staggering cost in fees, and at great expense to his personal and creative liberty.

Growing out of the surfing shtick was the smartest thing they ever did. But really, that's how all of the great artists, especially of that era, maintained or regained their success. They MATURED. Frankie Valli stopped singing about being a poor boy who didn't deserve love, Brian Wilson stopped writing songs about hot rods and surfboards, Lennon/McCartney started writing about more than pretty girls, Neil Sedaka stopped hitting on 16-year-olds, and even Elvis learned there was more to life than shaking his hips. The ones that didn't? Well, they ended up stuck on the nostalgia circuit, frozen in time until they got old and either have died or will soon.

Harris Yulin, Actor in ‘Scarface,’ ‘Training Day’ and ‘Ozark,’ Dies at 87

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/harris-yulin-dead-scarface-training-day-ozark-1236263033/

Quote
Harris Yulin, the ever-present Emmy-nominated actor who appeared in such films as Scarface, Clear and Present Danger and Training Day and on television in Frasier, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Ozark, has died. He was 87.

Yulin died Tuesday of cardiac arrest in New York City, his family and manager, Sue Leibman, announced.

Although he never found a starring role that made him a household name, Yulin was a familiar face who worked constantly during a career that spanned more than 50 years. “I’m not that high-profile,” he admitted in a 2010 interview with The Irish Times. “I just do the next thing that comes along.”

Ananda Lewis dies at 52

Most of you are probably too old to be familiar with Lewis, who at the age of 24 was one of the last big VJs for MTV in the late 1990s and early 2000s before the network went all-reality. An ill-fated attempt to launch a talk show in 2001, just as the format was fading and as 9/11 hit the day after her show debuted, led to a fast fall into relative obscurity.

Lewis's death from breast cancer happened due to a number of miscalculations, declining to get examined out of a fear of radiation, and attempting to treat her cancer naturopathically instead of having the tumor removed.

Lou Christie, 1960s pop singer, dies at 82

Lugee Sacco was chosen to take on the identity of Lou Christie, who was originally conceived more or less as a Pittsburgh-based knockoff of Frankie Valli. His power falsetto was similar to Valli's but his chest voice was much different, a distinction he used to distinguish himself on a string of hits that included "The Gypsy Cried," "Lightnin' Strikes," "Two Faces Have I," "Rhapsody in the Rain" and "I'm Gonna Make You Mine."

Back in the day, I never saw the similarity between Christie and Vallie...but upon listening to Lighting Strikes...
Once Christie made it big, he ended up having a lot of his production done by people who had ties to Valli. "Lightnin' Strikes" was produced by Charlie Calello, who was the Four Seasons' bassist at the time. One of his backup singers was Peggy Farina/Santiglia, who was from the same hometown as Tommy DeVito and collaborated with Bob Gaudio on some songwriting. (Things you learn while researching something totally different...)

And yeah, at least during his early years, his handlers were clearly trying to draft off the huge success of Four Seasons records at the time ("Two Faces Have I" was particularly guilty of this in my opinion). But Lou's strength was his regular voice. It was soft, tender and quite frankly it never got the respect it deserved. When he got to showcase that, that's when he was at his best. Of his big hits, "I'm Gonna Make You Mine" illustrates that one well.

My favorite Christie record was his recording of the 1930 standard "Beyond the Blue Horizon," which has almost no falsetto.

Always enjoyed G. Ailard S. Artain, of the Uncanny Film Festival and Camp Meeting of the Air (I was a faithful listener as a college student in Tulsa).

Bobby Sherman, the pop singer and Here Come the Brides actor whose image graced bedroom posters, lunch boxes and fan magazines as a heart-fluttering teen idol of the 1960s, has died. He was 81.

Sherman’s death was announced Tuesday by his second wife, Brigitte Poublon. It was revealed in March that he had been diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer.

“Bobby left this world holding my hand — just as he held up our life with love, courage, and unwavering grace through all 29 beautiful years of marriage. I was his Cinderella, and he was my Prince Charming,” she wrote.
