Terry "Superlungs" Reid, one of classic rock's most prominent opening acts and session musicians, dies at 75

Reid was perhaps most famous for the roles he turned down: the lead singer positions for Led Zeppelin and Rainbow.

Chuck Girard, "Jesus Music" pioneer, dies of cancer.
Quote
LoveSong Pioneer Passes: Chuck Girard 1943 - 2025
Aug 11
Written By Christmas Beeler

A pioneer of contemporary Christian music since the Jesus movement of the 1970s, LoveSong cofounder Chuck Girard passed away in the presence of his family on Monday afternoon.

Born in Los Angeles, Chuck brushed with Billboard Chart fame as a teenager with The Hondells but became a high school alcoholic. He and his fellow musicians became disillusioned with life during the hippie movement of the 1960s, until they found Jesus at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa, CA.

Band mates Tommy Coomes and Fred Field were the first to accept Jesus, but Chuck was wary. When he reluctantly came to Calvary Chapel for the first time and heard the young people passionately singing simple folk songs, his heart was moved.

“God began to just hit me,” Chuck declared, gesturing to his heart. “I just broke. I had tears, snot, goo all over my face, my beard.” He surrendered his life to God.

Calling their band LoveSong, Chuck, Tommy, Fred, and Jay Truax dedicated their talent to God and started writing songs about Jesus—later joined by John Mehler and Bob Wall. Encouraged by Calvary Chapel founder Chuck Smith, LoveSong played at Calvary weekly, and crowds were singing their songs like “A Love Song,” “Little Country Church,” “Welcome Back,” and “Let Us Be One.” ...

Christian leader Dr. James Dobson, who advised 5 presidents, dead at 89

James Dobson, (April 21, 1936 – August 21, 2025) was an American evangelical Christian author, psychologist, and founder of Focus on the Family (FotF), which he led from 1977 until 2010.

Announced by his son on Facebook:
Quote
Ryan Dobson

My dad, Dr. James Dobson, has gone home to be with the Lord.

I’m walking through the kind of grief that words can’t quite reach. But even in the middle of it, I keep returning to this verse:
“For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” —John 3:17

That was my dad’s heart. Yes, he was bold. Yes, he spoke hard truths. But beneath all of it was a deep, quiet desire to help families, to protect children, and to introduce people to Jesus. Not to condemn. To save. To restore. To heal.
He didn’t just preach it—he lived it. With me. And with his grandchildren.

His greatest hope wasn’t just that the world would hear him—but that generations after him would know the love of Christ and walk in truth.

That legacy lives on in my family—and in so many of yours.

We’re spending this time together—grieving, remembering, praying, and holding tight to the promises of God.

If my dad’s words, work, or witness ever impacted your life, I’d be honored to hear your story. Your prayers and reflections mean more than you know.

I will say this much: the sheer speed of our cultural descent into sexual anarchy seems to have gone into full turbo mode since Dobson retired. His absence from the public sphere has been felt tremendously which should say a ton about his influence that he held such a strong influence in holding back the forces of "free love."

And while some of his ideas are making a comeback, it has never felt as authoritative as it was.

Longtime CBS News correspondent Mark Knoller has died at the age of 73.

He died in Washington, D.C., according to a close friend. The cause of death was not disclosed, but he suffered from diabetes and had been in ill health.

You don’t become cooler with age but you do care progressively less about being cool, which is the only true way to actually be cool.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Damn!

I don't say that often, but seriously. The Turtles were some of the boldest, wackiest entertainers in the music industry of the 1960s. I strongly recommend you look up their record The Turtles Present the Battle of the Bands, where they send up just about every genre popular at the time, including themselves! They had some legendary battling with the music industry over the years, too.

Rest easy, Phlorescent Leech.

Really sad to hear this, too. Mark was a brilliant musician, as is Howard Kaylan (the other half of Flo & Eddie, and a founding member of The Turtles).
