Ted Randall, founder of American shortwave radio's only commercially supported music channel, dies at 73

Most of you might not recognize the name. Shortwave is, of course, very much a niche following. But among shortwave operators, Randall was one of the most important of the modern era.

The year was 2010. Randall was a radio engineer and ham radio operator in Tennessee. He was approached by someone launching a shortwave radio station. An exchange was offered: Randall would offer his services for free, in exchange for getting the right to use one of the new station's channels for programming as he saw fit, since the new station had another entity leasing out the main channels and paying the bills. It started out innocuously enough, with talk shows like Dave Ramsey and Art Bell, and a ham radio show. By the late 2010s, Randall was playing oldies at night, and he began bringing on other veteran jockeys who were willing to host for free simply for being able to provide something of value to the shortwave band. I discovered the station in the early 2020s while bandscanning with a new shortwave radio I had bought.

Eventually, one night in 2022, things between Randall and the Tennessee station's chairman, along with its financial backers, fell out. Fortunately, a few days later, WRMI, a station in south Florida, agreed to offer Randall one of its many channels for a few hours each night. Thus was born WRMI Legends. If you tune to 5050 in the evening on a shortwave radio, you'll still hear that station. On a band known for its fringe kooks, pre-recorded preachers and increasing irrelevance, WRMI Legends provided an oasis of old school rock and roll, complete with commercial sponsors (mostly for ham radio equipment).

Randall was an irascible personality but a devout Christian. He had suffered some health problems in the last year of his life and, fittingly for a ham radio enthusiast, died at the age of 73--a common ham code used as a closing salutation.

Charles Strouse, Broadway composer behind the smash hits Annie and Bye Bye Birdie, dies at 96

Strouse was a pianist in the late 1950s who was approached by an upstart producer to produce a musical about teens; taking inspiration from a news story about Elvis being drafted, Strouse and his collaborator Lee Adams (who survives, at age 100) developed Bye Bye Birdie, which became a smash hit for the inexperienced composer. Several years of modest successes (including the Sammy Davis Jr. vehicle Golden Boy, which they spoofed as the short-lived A Broadway Musical some time later, and a Superman musical) and flops followed before making his next huge hit, Annie. Many other adaptations followed, some more successful than others.

Prior to breaking through on Broadway, his song "Born Too Late" was a hit record in 1958 for The Poni-Tails, and his "Those were the Days" became the iconic theme to All in the Family.

Remember going thru that town on the way back from visiting relatives and stopping at a restaurant. Dad asked a couple of questions like if it was a bad as the movie, and nobody, I mean nobody wanted to talk about it. The mood in the room was unsettled to say the least.

Kay Arthur, Bible teacher, dies at 91.
Quote
Kay Lee Arthur
(1933–2025)

Kay Lee Arthur, world-renowned author of more than 100 books and Bible studies, and cofounder of the nonprofit ministry Precept, passed away on May 20, 2025, at age 91 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, surrounded by her family. She will be remembered for her love for the Lord, His Word, and His people. A dynamic speaker with a warm writing style that captivated many, Kay was a remarkable beacon of grace and truth to all who encountered her.

Arthur’s gift for teaching helped her inspire countless others to study God’s Word inductively through the Precept Bible Study Method, encouraging millions to observe, interpret, and apply the truth of Scripture. She often said, “When you know what God says, what He means, and how to put His truths into practice, you will be equipped for every circumstance of life.” ...

I heard her speak at an apologetics conference sometime around 2008 or so, and she was a real dynamo. Very inspiring.

RIP, Miss Kay. You were a faithful servant.
You're everywhere I go, I am not alone
You call me as Your own to know You and be known.
You are holy!
And I fall down on my knees.
I can feel Your presence here with me.
Suddenly I'm lost within Your beauty,
Caught up in the wonder of Your touch.
Here in this moment I surrender to Your love.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. Rick Derringer, the guitarist and lead singer of The McCoys who shot to fame with their hit song "Hang On Sloopy," has passed away at the age of 77.

Enjoyed his stuff back in the day!  RIP

Off topic but did they ever confirm the identity of that girl in the video?
You don’t become cooler with age but you do care progressively less about being cool, which is the only true way to actually be cool.

Rick Derringer confirmed on his Facebook page on November 21, 2022, that the dancer in his "Hang On Sloopy" video from 1975 is Lisa Leonard Dalton.
This information resolved a long-standing mystery about the identity of the dancer, who was often mistaken for Liz Brewer, a British party planner with no connection to Derringer or the video.
Lisa Leonard Dalton was 19 years old at the time of her performance in the video.

"I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.

"So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."

Seventeen Techniques for Truth Suppression

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Harrison Tyler, the last living grandson of former president John Tyler, dies at 96

Tyler and his older brother Lyon G. Tyler Jr. (who died in 2020, age 95) were two curious footnotes in the legacy of John Tyler, who served as acting President of the United States in the 1840s before defecting to the Confederacy before his 1862 death. John Tyler had 13 children in his lifetime, the last seven of which with his second wife, Julia Gardiner (which is itself a sketchy story). The 11th of those 13 children, Lyon Gardiner Tyler, was born when John Tyler was 62 years old. Lyon, in turn, married Susan Ruffin and, at the age of 75, fathered Harrison Tyler. Thus, John Tyler would have living grandchildren until 235 years after his own birth. Through his mother, among other famous ancestors in Harrison Tyler's lineage were Pocahontas, William Henry Harrison (whom John Tyler had replaced as President) and the ancestors of Jimmy Carter.

While Harrison Tyler's primary vocation was as the owner of a major water treatment business, his peculiar family tree made him a prominent de facto historian and keeper of his grandfather's legacy; he donated much of the Tyler family papers to the College of William & Mary. He purchased and restored his grandfather's plantation and a Union fort built by black soldiers near that plantation (while John Tyler and Lyon Tyler were both staunchly pro-Confederate and critical of Abraham Lincoln, Harrison Tyler never expressed such strong opinions on the matter).

I am heartbroken over the loss of my dear friend Bernie Kerik. He was a decorated police officer, Corrections commissioner and NYC police commissioner during the worst terrorist attack on American soil. Bernie oversaw the biggest evacuation of a city during this time. His work in security has benefited many communities. My sympathies to his wife Hala, his son Joe and  his two daughters Celine and Angelina , whom are my goddaughters.
