Hey, Republicans.  The sky will not fall if there's a government shutdown.

The government was shutdown 6 times during Ronald Reagan's presidency.  Over 20 times since 1974. Yet, recent presidents have avoided it like the plague. The nation survived, Reagan won massive landslides, and, in the end, the public didn't give a damn despite all the media-Democrat Party hype at the time.  The bureaucrats wound up getting their money.  Social security checks and Medicare payments continued without a hitch.  So did veterans' benefits.  The active military was unaffected.  That is, truly essential government services were funded because they are specifically excluded from government shutdowns.  Indeed, taxes keep rolling into the government's treasury.  That never shuts down.  There is plenty of revenue for basic government operations.

But a shutdown does draw a line on what they call "discretionary spending" -- the government itself calls it non-essential spending -- much of which, but not all, funds ideologically driven projects.  And, yes, it can cause temporary inconveniences for those visiting, let's say, national parks, etc.  Seems like a small sacrifice.  In fact, it is a very, very small sacrifice.

Many years ago on my radio show, budget guru and now never-Trumper Paul Ryan told me that the government never really shuts down; indeed, he said when there is a so-called government shutdown, about 17% of the government actually shuts down.  When you think of it, since the biggest entitlements are unaffected, and they make up the overwhelming majority of government spending, it makes sense.  And, by the way, no one, and I mean no one, will discuss reforming any of the big entitlement programs.  Not even the self-anointed fiscal conservatives.

We are talking about a pittance in relative terms.  Nonetheless, the Republicans need to take a stand somewhere.  At least it'll be a beginning.  And they should explain to the people that the Democrats (and too many of their fellow Republicans) spend, borrow, and steal like pirates, which will bankrupt the country for their children and grandchildren, and further drive-up inflation, including the cost of food, clothing, and energy, destroy the value of their paychecks and pension checks, eventually collapse the government altogether, and that this drug-like spending addiction must be broken before it's too late, which it already may be.

The Republicans shouldn't act defensively or out of fear, but boldly and proudly.  They should speak up and speak to the people.  In a way, this is like the abortion issue.  What, you ask? The Democrats and their DC-based media lied about abortion and exploited it and fearmongered it in the last election in the belief they would ride it to victory.  Their propaganda became more extreme and insane the closer to the election.  They truly believed they had an issue that would drive them to victory.  It was pounded and pounded and pushed and pushed.  But the people didn't buy it.  Even more, there were much bigger issues about which the public cared.  Well, the Democrats and their media lost in a landslide didn't they, and it turned out that the tactics were of no consequence.  The economy was the #1 issue.

Do the right thing, Republicans.  It also happens to be good politics.  You might actually get used to it.  And stop destroying each other.  Just get your collective act together and fight.  This CR is just a baby step.

This is stupid.  The other bill never came to the floor.  Chip Roy is right.  Stop funding the Swamp.

Chip Roy is right.  Stop funding the Swamp.

Chip Roy is a double-edged problem:  He's a hothead who never learned how to work and play well with others, and a myopic visionary incapable of grasping a mult-level strategy.  Roy's quickly becoming Schumer's favorite Republican.

Johnson says plan C reached to avert shutdown, vote expected
by Mike Lillis, Emily Brooks and Mychael Schnell - 12/20/24 7:36 AM ET

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said Republicans have arrived at a plan C to avert a shutdown and the House will vote Friday morning on the legislation.

“Yeah, yeah, we have a plan,” Johnson said Friday morning as he entered the Capitol. “We’re expecting votes this morning, so you all stay tuned. We’ve got a plan.”

He did not say what it entails.

Lawmakers have little time to avoid a shutdown: Government funding runs out when the clock strikes midnight late Friday.

Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.) said on CNBC on shortly after Johnson’s comments Friday morning that he thinks Washington will probably avoid a shutdown since “we’re pushed up against Christmas here,” alluding to the likely path forward without directly confirming it, saying that will be up to the Speaker’s office to announce it.

“There’s a chance today a clean CR [continuing resolution], short term clean CR, it may be for two, three weeks,” Mullin said. “That was something that was discussed, you know, late last night, you know, even some discussions this morning. I’m not going to say that’s going to happen, but you know, that’s really the option that’s on the table.”

If Johnson does move forward with a clean, short-term stopgap, it is unclear if that will muster enough votes to clear the House. A handful of Republicans have historically opposed continuing resolutions, and Democrats have evaluated the Speaker’s proposals on a case-by-case basis, two factors that are fueling the chances of a shutdown so close to the deadline.

It’s also unclear if Johnson’s plan will appease President-Trump and his demand to raise the debt ceiling as part of the CR.

Friday’s vote will be the latest effort by the House to fund the government ahead of the partial shutdown deadline. And it will come hours after the House on Thursday voted down Johnson’s plan B bill that combined a three-month government funding extension with $110 billion in disaster and farm aid, some other policy measures, and a two-year suspension of the debt limit — the latter of which was a last-minute demand by Trump.

How Trumpian to advocate removing the debt ceiling, so he can spend $12Trillion in 4 years.

I didn't realize that working and playing well with the Swamp is something we are supposed to support.  To hell with that.  We are supposed to be at war with the Swamp, not ready to jump in bed with them by awarding them another $100+ billion in deficit spending.  If Trump's strategy is to further fund the Swamp, then count me out.

Many "announcements" come from the Swamp.

"Announcements" are not results, achievements, accomplishments, etc.

For the unwashed deplorable masses, "announcements" are insufficient.

We send them to DC and pay their for their salaries and staff.  In exchange, we expect them to pass a (smaller? balanced?) buget on time, reduce the size and scope of the Federal Government and rewrite immigration laws.  If they are not up to the task, and cannot accomplish these in the next two years, we need elect new people to occupy those seats.

The NFL does not tolerate losing coaches and underperforming players, and neither should the American electorate.

More proof victory is wasted on Republicans.  **nononono*

Something straight out of the mouths of Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries.  The Swamp has spoken.

You're going to erase the promises of a hard fought and stellar victory in November

Uh, no.  That's what you're doing.  By offering the Swamp another $100 billion in deficit spending on top of the $500 billion a CR already contains, plus taking away the ONLY weapon we have at reducing spending.  The bill Trump backs is a Swamp rat's dream.

Sharyl Attkisson 🕵️‍♂️💼🥋
@SharylAttkisson
Quick story about govt. shutdowns and the theatrics behind them. One year when I was reporting at CBS News during a govt. shutdown, I think 2013, we were sincerely searching for real life impact. When we couldn't find any, *that* should have been part of the story. Instead, we kept trying to create the appearance of an impact.

It wasn't really trying to be dishonest. It was, in my retrospective view, because the general editorial idea for the story was to show how bad the "Republican" shutdown was for ordinary Americans, and the answer simply couldn't be that it wasn't. I've written quite a bit about this but we, as journalists, too often "decide" the story in advance and shape the facts to fit our narrative, rather than gathering information and letting that tell the story, whatever it may be.

Anyway, the Ds were blaming Rs for the shutdown, so we were calling Ds and the Obama administration for ideas to report what was the real impact. Taking our cue, these officials fabricated impact that we could report. For example, they cordoned off outdoor public monuments in Washington DC. We knew and even discussed in the newsroom that this made no sense. These monuments weren't "manned" to begin with. The only reason to cordon them off from the public was so that visiting tourists would see the "impact" of the shutdowns and the news media would have something to take pictures of and interview people about. There are other examples but this is the one I remember the most.

The battle lines are drawn.  On one side, you have Democrats, House GOP leadership, and the rest of the Swamp.  On the other, you have Conservative Republicans who want to starve the Swamp of funding and who are honoring the commitments made during the election.   Conservatives who refuse to surrender to Democrats before the fight has even begun.

I know which side I'm on.
