A retired New York City Police Department (NYPD) Lieutenant and former NYPD commander is shedding light on the manhunt for the suspect who gunned down UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson and what investigators are doing to track him down.

"He's not a professional, but he is calculated. He obviously planned this out to a very good degree as well. He planned his escape route, he planned everything prior to it," Joe Cardinale told Fox News Digital.

Cardinale added the fact the killer left behind the bullets and left messages on them, like "depose," makes him think it could be someone involved in a civil suit with UnitedHealthcare or at least connected, making this not a coincidence or "wrong place, wrong time" situation.

The words "deny," "depose" and "defend" were written on the live rounds and casings left behind by the assassin after the shooting.

The words could be derived from "Delay. Deny. Defend: Why Insurance Companies Don't Pay Claims and What You Can Do About It," a book published by Jay Feinman in 2010. Fox News Digital could not reach Feinman or the book's publisher, Delden Press, for comment.

"I'm still not convinced that this is somebody who just happened to be, you know, upon him on that morning. I think he had intimate knowledge of where Mr. Thompson would be at that hour. Now, how did he get that knowledge? That is the big million-dollar question right now," Cardinale said. "He's leaving these clues, he's discarding it, he planned it from the beginning."

Cardinale said he has seen actions like these from past criminals who he says get arrogant and feel like they are "smarter than the police."

You don't need to do this when you're "closing in" on the suspect, I would think...

Agree to a point.  There is enough dna testing out there with Ancestry, FTDNA, and 23/Me  that they know exactly who he is.  The "closing in" comments are an attempt to flush him out like a quail.  The deal is (see my earlier comment) ...  isthat he has made his Hoover vacuum cleaner call, and might soon he be as as big of a mystery disappearance as D.B. Cooper. 

I might be wrong, but my best guess of locale?  Check one of serveral countries that the U.S. doesn't have extraditon rights to.  He's had plenty of time to bolt the country.

The person has a similar gun to the one used in the shooting last Wednesday, the source added.

Altoona is a city located about 100 miles east of Pittsburgh.

Thompson died last Wednesday after being shot outside of a hotel in New York City. The suspect in the shooting was last seen at a bus station in upper Manhattan.

The person of interest arrested in Altoona, Pa., in the search for the individual who killed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson has been identified as Luigi Mangione.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams said at a press conference Monday that “He matches the description of the identification we've been looking for” and that he is “in possession of several items that we believe will connect him to this incident.”

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said "The suspect was in a McDonald's and was recognized by an employee who then called local police.

"Responding officers questioned the suspect, who was acting suspiciously and was carrying multiple fraudulent IDs, as well as a U.S. passport. Upon further investigation, officers recovered a firearm on his person as well as a suppressor, both consistent with the weapon used in the murder," she added.

"They also recovered clothing, including a mask consistent with those worn by our wanted individual. Also recovered was a fraudulent new Jersey ID matching the ID our suspect used to check into his New York City hostel before the shooting incident," Tisch said. "Additionally, officers recovered a handwritten document that speaks to both his motivation and mindset."

NEW: I have obtained Luigi Mangione's high school yearbook page, where his parents praised him for being a courageous and respectful young man. Mangione, 26, was originally from Towson, Maryland.
The former valedictorian and Ivy League grad wrote a manifesto containing phrases like "these parasites had it coming," according to police.
Mangione reportedly used a ghost gun that may have been made using a 3-D printer.
Police say Mangione was recognized by a McDonald's employee who alerted police. When they arrived, Mangione gave them his fake ID, the same one he allegedly used to check into an Upper West Side hostel.
It appears that Mangione had been "missing" for a while as apparent friends were concerned about his whereabouts over the past year.
Mangione's family has mostly been quiet since he was revealed to be a person of interest, except for his sister who released a story on IG saying "praying for you."

No doubt other murders were committed during this time that got no attention and little investigation, even if they were easier to solve.

The homemade plastic gun was the source of cycling problems. They just don't work as well with hand printed stuff that does not fit perfectly together as a mass produced gun does. I wonder why someone would bother with using such a gun, just get a good cheap Taurus 9mm and dispose of it afterwards somewhere in the woods with a pre-dug hole (or just use a critter hole already in the ground). Scatter some other metal around the area to thwart/hamper using metal detectors to find it.
