Hundreds of thousands of people in the mainly Russian-speaking territory of Transnistria are left facing the remaining winter months without heating or power after Ukraine halted the flow of Russian gas to several European countries on New Year’s Day.

The widely expected stoppage, which was confirmed by Russia’s state-owned energy giant Gazprom on Wednesday, marked an end to Moscow’s decades-long dominance over Europe’s energy markets.

Alongside Slovakia and Austria, Moldova was thought to be one of the countries most at risk from the cessation of Russian gas supplies.

Russian Commander Linked to Civilian Deaths in Hroza Severely Injured in Explosion

A Russian military officer, Captain Konstantin Nagaiiko, known for his involvement in war crimes during Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine, has been critically injured in an explosion in Shuya, Ivanovo region, according to Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence (HUR).

On January 3, an explosion occurred at a Russian military facility where Nagaiiko, a battery commander of the 112th Rocket Brigade, was on duty. The blast inflicted severe shrapnel injuries, including brain trauma, necessitating emergency surgery. Reports suggest his condition remains critical, with limited chances of survival.

Nagaiiko, 29, is accused of orchestrating attacks using Iskander ballistic missiles on civilian and military targets in Ukraine’s Sumy and Kharkiv regions. Most notably, his unit carried out a missile strike on a café in Hroza, Kharkiv Oblast, on October 5, 2023, during a memorial gathering. The attack resulted in the deaths of 59 civilians, including an eight-year-old child, and left five others injured.  .  .

The Ukrainian vehicles in the Kursk area carry some powerful EW capabilities.

Here are two instances where the Russian drone lost signal far before reaching the intended target.

WRT the 8:01 PST post above, it appears that Ukraine is carrying out several large attacks in Kursk. Whether these are to capture more territory or force Russia to divert resources from their stalled counterattack in another part of Kursk is unclear.

I believe it is a combination of both (capture territory or force Russia to divert resources).

If the Russians divert overwhelming resources then UKF would probably retreat to their defensive positions.

If the Russians don't divert overwhelming resources then UKF would probably establish new defensive positions.

UKF must have excellent ISR (Intelligent, Surveillance, Reconnaissance) drone coverage in all of Kursk, most likely provided by their "Shark" drone.

I flew all USAF versions of the F-4 including the F-4G Wild Weasel and RF-4.

Senior Russian officer killed in Ukrainian drone strike in Zaporizhzhia region

Ukrainian military intelligence killed Sergei Melnikov, the chief of staff of the Russian grouping "Storm. Ossetia," marking the removal of another high-ranking Russian official.

The operation took place in the Zaporizhzhia region where Melnikov, known by the codename "Kam," was targeted. Operatives from Ukraine's Defense Intelligence (GUR) carried out the mission, capturing footage now available through the agency's channel as of January 5.

Melnikov was ambushed on the Vasylivka-Tokmak highway in the occupied territory of Zaporizhzhia by drone operators from the GUR's "Kraken" unit. An FPV drone attacked the UAZ "Patriot" vehicle he was traveling in. Although the car initially evaded the strike, it crashed into a ditch and overturned. The drone then delivered a fatal blow through the vehicle's windshield.
