Throughout 2024, Ukraine's Air Defense Forces intercepted over 1,300 missiles and 11,200 attack drones launched by Russian forces targeting the country.

This was reported by the Air Force Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

“In 2024, Ukraine’s air defense forces successfully destroyed over 1,300 missiles of various types, 11,200 attack drones, and 3,200 operational-tactical reconnaissance UAVs. Additionally, 40 enemy aircraft and six helicopters were downed this year,“ the Air Force Command stated.

At the same time, throughout 2024, the Ukrainian Air Force conducted over 20,000 sorties, nearly 9,000 of which involved the combat use of Western-supplied weaponry.  .  .

It's a bit confusing, as available info is partial and the context confusing, but it looks like Ukraine has equip marine (= boat) drones with heat-seeking missiles and shot down one Mi-8 and damaged another. The Mi-8 is a 60s vintage design utility - military and civilian - helicopter that is too useful to obsolete.

NAVAL SAM KILL:  UKR again makes history: for the first time, an unmanned surface vessle has downed an aircraft in combat.  A Russian Mi-8 helicopter was shot down off Crimea by a Magura V5 armed with R-73 surface to air missiles.

My understanding is that the helicopter shootdown was done by positioning the naval drone near an airfield that is close to the shore, possibly in ambush. In the past, the Russians have used helicopters to protect important ports and targets against naval drones, so this development could result in a mixed group of naval drones to complicate that tactic.

While some 17K Mi-8 transport helicopters have been made, just ~126 Mi-28 attack helicopters have been made.

The Ukrainian air force doesn’t have a lot of Sukhoi Su-25 attack jets left. But the ones it does have are still in the fight as Russia’s wider war on Ukraine grinds toward its fourth year.

A recent video montage capturing imagery from cameras attached to the tough, subsonic attack jets depicts the Soviet-vintage planes lobbing French-made Hammer glide bombs at Russian targets.

The video of the single-seat Su-25s in action with their 550-pound winged bombs comes just a few weeks after a similar video appeared online depicting the Ukrainian air force supersonic Sukhoi Su-27s tossing American-made 250-pound glide bombs.

In both cases, the tactics on display are similar. The warplanes fly low and fast toward the front line, hugging the terrain to avoid detection by Russian air defense batteries. At the last moment, before releasing their bombs, the planes climb.  .  .

I believe the USVs with heat seeking missiles would not be positioned near an airfield. They  would "escort" the kamikaze USVs to the target area and engage & shoot down any helicopters that threaten any USV. Once the kamikaze USVs have reached their target the "Escort" USVs will return to base.

You are correct in that this will make the helicopter's job much more hazardous.

To date, I have not seen any reports as to what the target was for the kamikaze  USVs. Perhaps there weren't any kamikaze  USVs in the attack and the primary targets were the helicopters...much like Operation Bolo led by Col. Robin Olds.
