Secret Service Director: We Increased ‘What We Felt Was Appropriate’ After Iran Threat on Trump

During a portion of an interview with CNN on Tuesday that was released on Wednesday, Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle responded to a question on what assets were increased around 2024 Republican presidential candidate former President Donald Trump after a credible threat from Iran by stating that “What we increased was what we felt was appropriate for the former President and for that particular event on that day.”

CNN Law Enforcement Correspondent Whitney Wild asked, “Was every element, every part of his, from the intelligence, to the Counter Assault Team, to the detail agents, the shift agents, every element, top to bottom, of the advance and the operation, was every element increased after you learned of this credible threat?”

Cheatle answered, “What we increased was what we felt was appropriate for the former President and for that particular event on that day. We have been increasing the assets and the resources and the staffing that we have been providing to the former President since he was a presidential candidate and then the presumptive nominee. That’s what I can tell you.”

Wild then said, “That sounds like a no.”

Cheatle responded, “I am not saying a no at all. I’m saying that we have continued to increase the resources that we’ve been providing to the former President.”

Secret Service Director: We Were ‘Solely Responsible’ for Site Design at Trump Rally, Not Locals

During a portion of an interview with CNN on Tuesday that was released on Wednesday, Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle responded to a question on her earlier statement that local law enforcement was responsible for the building from which an attempted assassin fired at 2024 Republican presidential candidate former President Donald Trump by stating that the Secret Service was “solely responsible for the design and the implementation and the execution of the site” of the rally.

CNN Law Enforcement Correspondent Whitney Wild asked, “When you said that local law enforcement was responsible for that building, what did you mean by that?”

Cheatle answered, “So, Secret Service respects local law enforcement, and we could not do our job, either investigatively or on our protective mission, without them. In Pennsylvania, in fact, on that same day, they were also working the first lady trip and a vice presidential trip. So, I understand the constraints that they’re under, and, as I said earlier, we couldn’t do our job without them. At that particular site, we divided up areas of responsibility, but the Secret Service is solely responsible for the design and the implementation and the execution of the site. And that’s what I was trying to stress was that we just divided up areas of responsibility and they provided support to those areas of responsibility

Trump rally shooter’s parents called police on day of campaign event

Thomas Matthew Crooks’ parents were looking for him on Saturday in the hours leading up to the Trump rally shooting and eventually called law enforcement to indicate that he was missing and they were worried, Fox News has learned. 

It’s unclear what his parents told authorities, but the call happened on Saturday before Crooks later opened fire at Trump during the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

The parents are being cooperative with authorities and the FBI is still trying to determine a motive for the attack, sources also told Fox News.

Secret Service director backtracks as feds, local law enforcement point fingers over rally security

 Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle appeared to backpedal Tuesday as her agency and local law enforcement pointed fingers over the security lapse at former President Trump's Pennsylvania rally.

Cheatle said in an interview with CNN the Secret Service was "solely responsible" for security at Trump's rally, where 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks managed to climb on top of a nearby building and fire a rifle at Trump. One spectator was killed, and the Republican candidate and two others were injured during the attempted assassination on Saturday.

She told CNN that no assets from the rally were diverted on the day Trump was shot, even though other events in the state required Secret Service protection.

"At that particular site, we divided up areas of responsibility, but the Secret Service is totally responsible for the design and implementation and the execution of the site," Cheatle told the outlet.

Previously, the Secret Service director told ABC News that local law enforcement was responsible for the AGR International Inc., building, where Crooks found a sniper's perch.

Mayorkas Is Blocking Secret Service Director From Testifying

The Department of Homeland Security has opened an investigation after the Secret Service catastrophically failed to protect former President Donald Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania last weekend. Trump narrowly escaped death after a bullet went through his ear while he was speaking at a lectern. The shooter was positioned on an unsecured roof just 140 yards away from the stage. The DHS Inspector General has also opened an investigation.

Republicans and Democrats on Capitol Hill have also launched separate investigations and have called on Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to testify on Monday, July 22.

According to House Speaker Mike Johnson, DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas is attempting to block Cheatle from testifying. Johnson called on Cheatle to resign during an interview with Fox News Wednesday morning.

Johnson's claim is backed up by reporting from Tuesday.

    Biden's Department of Homeland Security, led by impeached Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, just stepped in to block the Secret Service from providing a previously agreed-to briefing to lawmakers on the House Oversight Committee.

Iran Denies Role in Trump Assassination Attempt — But Promises to Arrest Him

The government of Iran denied an anonymous report by the left-wing U.S. outlet CNN claiming American law enforcement authorities had discovered evidence of an Iranian plot to kill former President Donald Trump, insisting Wednesday it had nothing to do with the assassination attempt.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry nonetheless insisted it would continue to “pursue legal action” against Trump for his order to conduct an airstrike in 2020 killing a top Iranian state terrorist, Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani.

Trump, currently the frontrunner in the 2024 presidential election, was speaking at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday when a gunman shot at his head, narrowing missing his skull and injuring his ear. The shooter, who law enforcement eliminated shortly after the assassination attempt, killed one person, rallygoer Corey Comperatore and injured two others.

The Iranian government had not made any significant comment on the situation prior to the CNN article accusing it of preparing a similar assassination attempt, with the exception of veiled remarks by former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The ex-president, who has since rebranded as a populist “reformer,” published a message that did not name Trump but appeared to reference the situation.

“Acts of terror and terrorism, both state and non-state, are among the most heinous anti-human actions, the depth of whose evil, words cannot fully express,” Ahmadinejad wrote. “Humanity is suffering such severe pains all over the world.”

Tehran broke its silence on Wednesday.

Joseph Schumpeter dishes out heaps of astounding insights in his 1942 book “Capitalism, Socialism, and Democracy.” I keep going back to this treatise for guidance in our strange times, mainly to better understand the interaction of economics, politics, history, and culture. His outlook is probably best described as transideological: a partisan of capitalist systems, he was not optimistic about human nature itself.

Part of my draw to his work is that I used to dismiss it as excessively pessimistic. Of course he wrote in wartime. A product of Old World Europe, he made a name for himself as a scholar before the Great War. His education was of the highest prewar sort: all romance languages, all disciplines, the great books of all time, along with mighty technical knowledge. We’ll probably never see his likes again.

By the time the second war in Europe broke loose, his outlook had matured greatly from his earlier works on technical economics. He saw the impact of the rise of incredible wealth on the culture at large. Essentially, his view was that markets and capitalism lead to their own cultural undoing.

Yes, capitalism works. Manna falls as if from heaven, and people are no longer taught its source through any lived experience. Better lives, richer lives, more opportunities rain down on the population as if by magic, leading generations of people to believe that none of the blessings of civilization require anything like the ancient virtues. We are all along for the ride, and just enjoying its riches.

What does this do to human character? It trains people to believe that the ancient virtues are no longer operational. We don’t need fortitude, resilience, courage, and determination. A credit-soaked world no longer needs thrift, prudence, or sobriety. Instead, rising wealth of the sort we’ve experienced since the late 19th century trains people just to go along for the ride. Careerism replaces courage. Credentials replace talent. Erudition replaces wisdom. Indulgence displaces prudence.

This has a profound effect on policy, Schumpeter wrote. States come to believe that they can promise their populations anything and that normal accounting has been superseded. They create giant cradle-to-grave welfare states. They intervene in every conflict, domestic and foreign, as if there are no limits to resources. The culture celebrates recklessness, sloth, and opportunism instead of discipline and fortitude.

And what is the result, in Schumpeter’s view? The very foundations of prosperity are eaten away, giving rise to a form of socialism that works so long as the crisis is kept at bay.

Our standards of living are falling, even dramatically, even at a pace no one has previously experienced in living memory. You know it in your bones and yet public culture hasn’t really admitted it.

All of this is backdrop to the real crisis of right now, and you know the substance of it: It is a political crisis now illustrated by an attempt on Donald Trump’s life. He was spared by the grace of God: a sudden turn of his head toward the screen caused the bullet to slice off the top of his ear but miss his head.

As if by a miracle, he survived.

But the story does not stop there. Having been shot at, and bleeding from his head, he rose to his feet and rallied the gathered crowd, while promising to fight on, and urging others to do the same. As security forces got him away from the violence, he fist-pumped the air one more time and then left.

In our times, we’ve rarely if ever seen anything like that. Those who said he was a mere actor, influencer, opportunistic politician, or businessman on the make saw a different man when faced with mortality itself. He exercised resilience, fortitude, and moral courage, all those ancient virtues that are so ill-practiced in our times but which ultimately drive history.

Most people I know, even those who completely oppose his politics, are still in awe of that scene. It rocked the world, and made history. This is even aside from the incredible images that came from the scene: the real-time videos themselves present a stunning display.

We in our times are so accustomed to a culture of inauthenticity, opportunism, performance, posing, careerist ladder climbing, and pettiness that it is startling to witness an authentic display of genuine fearlessness in the face of death. If I may say so: we needed this. Desperately. We all needed to remember and to know that it matters.

All politics aside, our times have deprecated and driven out the old virtues and toughness along with it. I’m convinced that an authentic display of exactly that is precisely what the world craves right now. We need it more than ever in our lives. Otherwise, we will continue to go the way that Schumpeter predicted, straight to the doom he foresaw for Western culture.

Their response? Apparently, nothing. Nobody stopped him, nobody questioned him, and nobody was ready to halt the event when Crook reappeared on a rooftop during the event itself.

“Eh, no big deal, full speed ahead on the rally. Oh, and don’t put anybody on that roof 400 ft from Trump. It has a slope and we wouldn’t want anyone getting hurt!”
