Spanish woman believed to be the oldest person in the world has died at age 117

MADRID -- Maria Branyas, an American-born Spaniard considered the world’s oldest person at 117 years old, has died, her family said on Tuesday.

In a post on Branyas' X account, her family wrote in Catalan: “Maria Branyas has left us. She has gone the way she wanted: in her sleep, at peace, and without pain.”

The Gerontology Research Group, which validates details of people thought to be 110 or older, listed Branyas as the oldest known person in the world after the death of French nun Lucile Randon last year.

The next oldest person listed by the Gerontology Research Group is now Japan’s Tomiko Itooka, who is 116 years old.

Branyas was born in San Francisco on March 4, 1907. After living for some years in New Orleans, where her father founded a magazine, her family returned to Spain when she was young. Branyas said that she had memories of crossing the Atlantic Ocean during World War I.

NBA Legend Alvin Attles Dead At 87

Warriors legend and NBA Hall of Famer Alvin Attles passed away Tuesday surrounded by family. He was 87.

Attles spent over 60 years with the Warriors organization as a player, general manager and team ambassador, helping lead the franchise to the 1975 NBA championship. Golden State made the announcement Wednesday that Attles died Tuesday while at his home in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Nicknamed “The Destroyer” because of his physicality, Attles only played and worked for the Warriors. He was drafted by the team in 1960 in the fifth round when they were still based in Philadelphia. In the entire history of the NBA, Attles’ run with the Warriors is the longest stretch with one team for a single individual.

The Warriors moved from Philadelphia to San Francisco in 1962. The San Francisco Warriors played in several venues in SF and as far south as San Jose, finally moving to Oakland Coliseum Arena in 1971, where they changed their name to "Golden State". In 2019 the Warriors moved back to SF, in the newly built Chase Center (Oakland has managed to lose the Warriors, the Raiders, and this is the Athletics' last year in Oakland - they'll play a few seasons in Sacramento at the River Cats' stadium, and then finally move to Las Vegs).

Adam Andrzejewski, a longtime government transparency advocate, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday at age 55.

TheHerscher, Ill. native jumpstarted his career with a successful telephone directory business before committing himself to public service. After a brief run for Illinois governor, he founded OpenTheBooks.com, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing the public information about "every dime" of taxpayer money being spent by elected officials.

Andrzejewski was a weekly guest on The National Desk as well as several Sinclair stations, including FOX45 News in Baltimore, CBS Austin and FOX17 in Nashville. He also made frequent appearances on Fox Business Network and a variety of other radio and television channels.

I never heard of him until I saw him on Deep Space Nine. He  was really good as a crooner on that show. And extremely handsome for an older man . I'll have to look for his music from the 50s per your recommendations.

I lost my very truly best friend to it five years ago when she was 39. The doctors initially treated her for a liver infection. It was too late when they realized it was cancer.

Sorry for your loss @MeganC  So very sad and yes, it is one of the most difficult diseases to diagnose.

Yeah, it killed my mother-in-law in June 2023.  She had developed her first symptoms during COVID but couldn't get any doctor appointments for proper treatment because of the lockdowns and general cowardice that afflicted many of the hospitals and clinics in Pennsylvania at that time.  She was finally diagnosed with the cancer three months before he died but it was too late.  Another victim of Wolf and Levine.
