One of the main goals of the Russian full-scale war is to capture the remainder of occupied Luhansk and Donetsk Oblast; their operations on Kupiansk-Svatove-Kreminna line are dedicated to that. From this section of the frontline, they also aim to push into Kharkiv Oblast and re-occupy Kupiansk and Kupiansk-Vuzlovyi, important logistics hubs for the region. 

ISW reported that the geolocated footage published on August 21 indicates that Ukrainian forces have marginally advanced in the Serebrianske forest area southwest of Kreminna.  .  .

Banks in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have been rejecting transactions from Russian companies seeking electronic components and consumer electronics from China since early August, according to pro-Kremlin outlet Kommersant on August 28.

The reported reason for this is the risk of secondary sanctions, the outlet claimed.

Kommersant's sources, who remain unnamed, indicate that Russian firms had been using UAE-based entities to transfer funds to China for goods to be shipped directly to Russia. Now, transactions for products that do not pass through the Gulf country are being blocked, the outlet stated.

According to these sources, the restrictions were imposed at the initiative of China.

Last week, the US introduced a new set of sanctions targeting Chinese and Russian companies due to their support for Moscow's aggression. In response, Chinese institutions have begun reducing their business dealings with Russia to avoid or mitigate the impact of these trade restrictions.

Notably, several major Chinese banks have started blocking transactions for electronics due to concerns over secondary sanctions.  .  .

On August 28, Ukrainian forces revealed a video of shooting down a Russian Su-25 attack aircraft in the Kramatorsk direction, Ukraine.

This was reported on the Telegram channels of the Khortytsia Operational-Strategic Group of Troops and the 28th Separate Mechanized Brigade, named after the Knights of the Winter Campaign.

The aircraft was downed by the 28th Brigade’s anti-aircraft unit as it attempted to strike Ukrainian positions.  .  .

UKRAINE, Aug 28 — During the massive attack on Ukraine on August 26, Russians used the Kalibr cluster munition for the first time, said Volodymyr Tymoshko, head of the Main Department of the National Police in Kharkiv region, on Ukrainain TV.

On August 26, Russia launched a large-scale attack on Ukraine, targeting the energy objects in 15 regions of the country. The attack killed at least seven people (two died in hospitals) and injured 47 people, including three children and an infant born in 2024.

According to Volodymyr Tymoshko, Kalibr is a ship-launched missile with a cluster warhead, which the Russian Federation used to strike a civilian industrial facility.

“Before that, [the Russians] used Iskanders cluster missiles, [used them frequently to attack Ukraine in 2024, too.]. In 2023 and 2022, S-300 missiles were usually used for long-range strikes, and “Iskanders” were made in the [North] Korea and carried a high explosive warhead. Now they use cluster [warheads],” Tymoshko said.

The first, large, burst of fire from the lower Su-25 was popping flares, whether the incoming missile had been detected or SOP after dropping munitions. The second, smaller, burst was the MANPAD hitting the Su-25. The Su-25 is a pretty robust bird, so being brought down by a single MANPAD indicates a "perfect" hit. Obviously, the MANPAD was not diverted by the flares.

The Su-25 was the Soviet "answer" to the A-10. Both are subsonic, though the Su-25's swept wings might make handling if it accidentally going trans-sonic in a dive a little less rough. It has some robustness and pilot protection, though its under-wing engines' location makes the plane more "visible" to ground-based IR missiles.

In the video above, the two-plane flight seems to be typical Russian tactics. Maybe it's like a 2-10-make-1 foul shot in basketball? :shrug:

Ukrainian air force commander fired after fatal F-16 crash

The dismissal came on the same day that Oleshchuk directed scathing criticism at a lawmaker who is deputy head of the Ukrainian parliament's defense committee for her claims that the F-16 was downed by a Patriot air-defense system. Ukraine has received an unspecified number of the U.S.-made systems.

Volodymyr Zelenskiy has fired the head of Ukraine’s air force a day after it emerged that a recently delivered F-16 jet had crashed earlier this week, killing the pilot.

“I have decided to replace the commander of the air forces … I am eternally grateful to all our military pilots,” Zelenskiy said in his evening video address on Friday, without giving a reason for the dismissal of Mykola Oleshchuk.

But Zelenskiy spoke of the need to “protect” the lives of those defending the country, suggesting the dismissal is probably related to the F-16 crash in which Lt Col Oleksiy Mes died.

The arrival of the F-16s, donated by a number of European nations, was delayed due to the lengthy training programme required for pilots and ground staff to be able to operate the aircraft.

Mariana Bezugla, a member of a parliamentary defence committee, had earlier claimed the plane was shot down by friendly fire. Reuters cited a US official stating the plane did not appear to have been hit by Russian fire, and the crash may have been caused by mechanical failure or pilot error.
