Russian Civilians Keep Getting Killed by Putin's Tanks

Russia's military vehicles have been involved in a spate of fatal accidents this summer, resulting in the deaths of Russian civilians.

At least four incidents in June and July have seen Russian President Vladimir Putin's tanks and trucks hitting civilian cars on Russian roads.

A woman, 39, and her 6-year-old son were killed after a Russian military truck crashed into their vehicle in Novoshakhtinsk in Russia's southern Rostov region. Three other children—ages 9, 16 and 17—were hospitalized after the crash, local media reported on Wednesday.

Investigative Russian news outlet The Insider reported that markings on the vehicle indicate it belongs to Russia's Eastern Military District.

It marked the third such incident this month, independent Russian outlet the Moscow Times reported.

On July 24, a Russian tank crashed into a civilian car in Russia's Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine, killing the driver, according to the local Telegram channel Pepel.  .  .

It is reported that the helicopter could have been carrying injured people.

The first batch of F-16 fighters arrived in Ukraine

More than a year after the United States agreed to the transfer of F-16 fighters to Ukraine, the first aircraft arrived on its territory. The deadline for delivery was the end of July, and it has been maintained, people familiar with the situation told Bloomberg.

According to them, the number of aircraft is small. At the same time, they do not know whether pilots trained by Western countries will be able to immediately begin combat duty or it will take more time.

The delivery of the aircraft themselves is only part of the process of strengthening the Ukrainian Air Force. It also includes training of pilots and maintenance personnel, preparation of runways and bases for repair and maintenance.

The process of training F-16 pilots in the West takes about four years. After that, U.S. pilots typically spend at least a year in their unit before being sent to their duty station, "and these guys will go straight into battle," a U.S. official told The Wall Street Journal about the Ukrainian pilots.

According to The New York Times, so far only about a dozen F-16s will be able to participate in sorties, to which about 20 trained pilots will be attached.

Ukrainian leaders have long asked for these aircraft from Western countries, but President Joe Biden agreed only in May 2023.Four European countries - the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway and Belgium - agreed to supply fighters: there should be about 80 of them in total, but the process will stretch over this and next years.

Weapons for the F-16 will be provided by the United States: these will be air-to-ground missiles, two types of bombs and two types of air-to-air missiles. It will be enough to meet Ukraine's urgent needs, a US official told the WSJ.

And a senior Western intelligence official told the newspaper that it would take some time to integrate the F-16 into the Ukrainian air force and could take months before they had a noticeable impact on the course of hostilities. "The first thing I would worry about if I were the Russians would be attack helicopters and things like that," he said.  .  .  .

General Staff: Russian army drops 7 glide bombs on Kharkiv region

UKRAINE, KHARKIV OBLAST, July 31 — Since the beginning of the day, the Russian army dropped seven glide bombs (KABs) on the Kharkiv region from the Russian cities of Belgorod and Shebekino, reported the General Staff.

Russia started its new offensive north and northeast in the Kharkiv region in May, but Ukrainian troops have stabilized the frontline in this section since. Now, heavy battles are ongoing in and around Vovchansk (three miles from the border, 46 miles away from Kharkiv) and near Lyptsi (six miles from the border, 12 miles from Kharkiv.)

The General Staff reported that the Russians dropped KABs on Slobozhanske, Lyptsi, Vilcha, Horiane, and Velykyi Burluk.

According to the General Staff, the Russian army continued their assault in the Kharkiv direction. In total, there were six combat clashes over the day. The combat was near Tykhe and Vovchansk.

In addition, the Ukrainian army spotted groups of the 1st Assault Company of the 83rd Separate Airborne Brigade of Russia moving to the frontline positions near Tykhe.

1. The original Leopard 1 was an early 1960s design. It was kind of like a battle cruiser, heavily armed (for the time) and sacrificing some armor for speed. The 1A5 was the culmination of series of upgrades, increased armor and much improved targeting technology.

2. The Mi-8 is a general-purpose cargo/transport helicopter. As the model number suggests, its been around for decades. It's just too good at what it does to simply mass-replace with a new model.

3. Omsk is something like 1600 miles from Ukraine. It's just north of Kazakhstan on the Irtysh River. Sounds like local Russians were in on the sabotage/attack, with or without Ukrainian assistance.

Yeah, Omsk is located along the Trans-Siberian Railroad and a major transportation center for connecting Russia to Eastern Siberia.  It played a big role in the Russian Civil War of 1917-1922.
