Russian Oil Export Earnings Hit Four-Month Low Amid Decreasing Flows

According to Bloomberg's report on July 11, revenues from Russian oil exports have dropped to their lowest level in 4 months, due to slightly reduced shipment volumes, as indicated by data from the International Energy Agency (IEA).

Russia's earnings from oil exports in June totaled approximately $16.7 billion, marking a 1.2% decrease from the previous month. This decline continues from a peak of nearly $19 billion in February 2024. Still, Russia’s oil export earnings surged nearly 23% from a year before.

However, the consistent decrease in Russia's oil export revenue volumes since March, as estimated by the IEA, does not necessarily indicate a reduction in overall financial inflows to the Kremlin.

Russia's oil taxes, which contribute to the national budget, primarily depend on crude production volumes, the price of Russian barrels, and the exchange rate of the ruble against the dollar.

Russian oil taxes generated $6.7 billion for the Russian budget, marking an increase of nearly 50% compared to the same period last year.  .  .

The Australian government is set to give Ukraine another $250 million in military support — its largest contribution to the war effort since Russia invaded.

Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles announced the package on the final day of the NATO summit in Washington DC.

The event, which has been taking place against a backdrop of turbulence in American politics, has been largely focused on bolstering support for Ukraine.

But Australia and other non-member partners from Asia-Pacific nations have sent delegations to strengthen ties with the alliance amid fears about Chinese aggression in the region.

NATO has also accused China of being a "decisive enabler" of Russia's ongoing invasion, and called on Beijing to stop supplying weapons components, and other material and political support.

Colonel arrested whose regiment was associated with the murders in Bucha

In Ryazan, Colonel Artyom Gorodilov, who is under US sanctions due to the war in Ukraine and his possible involvement in war crimes, was detained in a case of fraud on an especially large scale. Subsequently, a court in Moscow, at the request of the investigation, sent him to a pre-trial detention center. He does not admit guilt.

The detention of Gorodilov was first reported by Kommersant, citing a source. FSB military counterintelligence officers took Gorodilov to Moscow and handed him over to representatives of the Main Military Directorate of the Investigative Committee.

The theft of what kind and for what amount is imputed to Gorodilov is still unknown. According to the Criminal Code, an "especially large amount" starts from one million rubles. The meeting on the measure of restraint was held behind closed doors.

Since 2019, Gorodilov has been the commander of the 234th Airborne Assault Regiment, which is stationed in Pskov, and at the beginning of the full-scale war in Ukraine, he was deployed in Bucha, Kyiv region. His name appeared in a number of foreign media publications about alleged war crimes committed by the Russian army in Ukraine. In particular, in the New York Times investigation into the involvement of paratroopers of the 234th regiment in the murders of civilians in Bucha.

In April 2022, it was reported that for the fighting in the Kyiv region, by decree of the Minister of Defense, Artem Gorodilov was awarded the military rank of "Guards Colonel" ahead of schedule. Later, he was appointed commander of the 83rd Separate Air Assault Brigade stationed in Ussuriysk.

Kommersant notes that in the criminal case of the Guards, the colonel passes as the commander of an airborne assault regiment.

  • The Russian army entered Bucha on February 27, 2022. After its retreat at the end of March, local authorities and journalists reported the discovery of more than 400 bodies of civilians. It was found that most of the dead were shot, some died from torture. The facts of killings, rapes and robberies of civilians by the Russian military in Bucha were confirmed by international organizations such as the UN and the OSCE.

Ukraine's navy added three Swedish-made patrol boats to its fleet earlier this month as it continues to hammer Russian naval forces in the Black Sea.

The recent CB90 delivery comes after Sweden announced its massive $682 million military aid package to Ukraine in February, which included 10 CB90 vessels and 20 other riverine boats. The Netherlands similarly provided three more CB90s to Ukraine a month later, for a total of at least 16.

Steel Front, a military assistance initiative run by Ukrainian billionaire Rinat Akhmetov, sent Ukraine the new CB90-class fast assault crafts, which are already in operation in waters near Crimea.

Following a six-month effort by Steel Front and Ukrainian steel giant Metinvest, the three vessels and crew training for Ukrainian forces cost more than $4.1 million.

"There is no doubt the Black Sea is an important front," Oleksandr Vodoviz, an executive at Metinvest, said in a statement, "and our aim is that these powerful boats will make a significant difference to Ukraine's ability to defend itself."

In total, Sweden has provided at least 13 CB90s to Ukraine's navy. The Netherlands donated nearly two dozen inflatable and armored boats, including three CB90s, to Ukraine in March. The Finnish Ministry of Defense also delivered a number of landing crafts to Ukraine  .  .  .

CB90-class fast assault craft are armed with .50 caliber machine guns, so they are probably armored against that caliber of weapon. They are capable of up to 40 Kn and carry a grenade launcher and can carry mines. These probably aren't going to be sinking frigates, but their mines could make supplying orcish forces in Crimea even more risky (and might take out a frigate, if the orcs still have any).

A Russian contract soldier shot three colleagues and escaped from a military unit in the Belgorod region, according to the telegram channels Baza, Shot and the local publication "Pepel".

According to Shot, the military unit in which the incident took place is located in the Grayvoronsky district bordering Ukraine. The shooting was opened by a 28-year-old private, who had a domestic conflict with colleagues. As a result, he killed two soldiers and wounded another. After that, he fled.

A top Ukrainian official said that his country is on track to churn out "significantly" more small attack drones by the end of the year than it originally set out to make as it continues to expand its weapons production capacity.

Oleksandr Kamyshin, who serves as Ukraine's minister of strategic industries, shared in December that Kyiv planned to produce 1 million first-person-view, or FPV, drones by 2025. He said the country is also able to make over 10,000 mid-range attack drones capable of traveling hundreds of miles and more than 1,000 drones that can specifically reach targets more than 600 miles away throughout the year.

"This year we will produce significantly more than 1 million" of the FPV drones, Kamyshin told Business Insider this week, providing an update on the production efforts but declining to provide specific figures. "Mid-range strikers, long-range strikers — the goals will be outperformed as well," he said.

Throughout much of Russia's brutal war in Ukraine, FPV drones have been heavily featured in combat. Both sides have effectively managed to turn these systems — which are cheap and in abundance — into precision munitions by strapping explosives to them and using them to strike everything from armored vehicles to the soldiers in the trenches.  .  .  .

As World War II drew to a close, Soviet and Western officials raced to scoop up Nazi rockets and Nazi rocket scientists. In May 1946, the Soviet Union created a new rocket test range outside Moscow, in part to experiment with ex-Nazi V-2 rockets.

In many ways, the Kapustin Yar range is the birthplace of the Soviet space program. Tests of the V-2s spurred the development of domestically made rockets that lofted the first Soviet satellites into orbit.

Seventy-seven years after the first captured V-2 blasted off from Kapustin Yar, the sprawling range—3,000 square miles in area, according to a U.S. Central Intelligence Agency assessment from the 1990s—is a target in Russia’s wider war on Ukraine.

On or before July 9, at least one Ukrainian drone reportedly struck a rocket assembly building at Kapustin Yar, setting it ablaze. “The historic test range in Kapustin Yar, where Stalin’s rocketeers were learning to fly Nazi ballistic missiles in 1947, is apparently being de-nazified by Ukrainian drones!” quipped Russian space historian Anatoly Zak.  .  .  .

.  .  .  It’s yet another ominous sign for Russia that its most important military and industrial facilities are exposed to Ukrainian drone attacks. Yes, the Ukrainians are struggling with a serious shortage of air defense systems that has left their cities and airfields vulnerable to Russian raids.

But the Russians are struggling, too. The best Ukrainian drones range as far as 800 miles. There are so many thousands of Russian targets within 800 miles of the front line that the Russian air force cannot possibly defend all of them while also defending Russian forces in occupied Ukraine.

The air force must choose which bases, factories and space facilities inside Russia to protect—and which to leave undefended. It apparently chose not to guard Kapustin Yar. And so, on or around July 9, the historic test site burned.

Russia has accused Ukraine of preparing to destroy the Kyiv Hydroelectric Power Station and the Kaniv Reservoir.

Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has once again alleged that Ukrainians destroyed their own Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Station. According to her, Ukraine is now "preparing another provocation to blame Russia."

"We have noted reports that have emerged about research conducted by the so-called World Data Center for Geoinformatics and Sustainable Development of Kyiv Polytechnic Institute on possible scenarios of flooding adjacent territories due to the destruction of dams of certain reservoirs in the Dnipro cascade," she said.

On June 6, 2023, Russian forces blew up the dam of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Station. As a result of the explosion, settlements on both banks of the Dnipro River were flooded. Officially, 32 people died, but it is unknown how many people died on the temporarily occupied left bank of Kherson region by the Russians.  .  .  .

Two associates of arrested Russian defense official die days apart

Fifty-two-year-old businessman Igor Kotelnikov died in a Moscow detention center on July 8, the independent Russian outlet Mediazona reported on July 12.

According to Eva Merkacheva, a member of the Human Rights Council, Kotelnikov died after being held in a punishment cell, allegedly due to a blood clot, which she described as a common cause of death in the Russian Federal Penitentiary System (FSIN).

Kotelnikov was accused of bribing of top officials in the Russian Defense Ministry (MoD) to win large contracts. He was repeatedly visited in pre-trial detention by FSB officers who “pressured” him to testify against Ivanov. When he refused to do so, Kotelnikov was placed in a punishment cell, where he could not be held due to his illness.
The second person is 62-year-old Magomed Khandayev, the head of the Russian Defense Ministry's state examination department. The Russian propaganda agency TASS reported his death on July 9. No cause was given.
