Bruno Sammartino, professional wrestler, dies at 82

In a profession where many of the greats didn't live to reach 70 years old, Sammartino was an aberration in many ways. One of the greatest professional wrestlers in history, Sammartino, whose acrobatics revolutionized the sport and moved it away from its mat-based origins, held the heavyweight title in what eventually became WWE continuously for an unprecedented (and unreplicated) eight years between 1963 and 1971, then won it back for another four years from 1973 to 1977.
He returned to professional wrestling in the mid-1980s as part of a contract settlement with Vince McMahon when Sammartino learned McMahon's father had cheated him out of a large sum of money during his wrestling days. Dismayed with the direction professional wrestling was going with the increased use of steroids, Sammartino left the sport in 1988, not returning until 2013.
Sammartino was born in Italy and fled to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania during World War II, calling that city home for the rest of his life.
