Poor Alfie and his parents were failed all up and down that line.  Doctors, Hospital Administrators, the government bureaucracy and, finally, the Judge that would not let anybody else treat the boy (at no cost to them) all deserve a trip to Rochester.  Then there's the picture I saw of the wall of cops who were stationed to block anybody from sneaking the baby to safety.

There's a case like that happening here a mother from NJ is fighting a Philadelphia hospital about her son and life support. It's in NJ section and heartbreaking

The way I understand it, they never did diagnose him.  For all we know, their tender ministrations may have been what killed him.

These people were so cruel, they wouldn't even let his parents see him.  Unless they were let in as he breathed his last, that little boy died virtually alone without his parents to hold him.  What the hell?

I just don't understand why it was so important for the powers that be to hold on to Alfie till the very end.

Be vigilant people.  There are plenty in this country who would think state ownership of our kids is ok.  As it is, we have parents who have already abdicated parental responsibility for their kids  to the state. They don't even feed their own children.  They want the schools to do it for them.   Full state ownership is next.  And before ling, all of us will be at the mercy of some bureaucrat.

Populist talk radio host Chuck Harder dies at 74

The talk show host, whose poulist-nationalist approach favored third parties and protectionism, was briefly a national radio star in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He continued broadcasting for another decade after that, with less popularity in an era of network consolidation. Health problems ended his career in the mid-2000s and ultimately caused his death on April 10.

Filmmaker Carlos Carvalho Dies In Accident While Shooting ‘Wild At Heart’
Dino-Ray Ramos

Award-winning filmmaker Carlos Carvalho died after an accident while shooting the ITV series Wild at Heart. He was tragically killed when a giraffe attacked him while he was getting a shot of the animal.

Carvalho had been working on the majority of the series about a British family who have set up a game lodge in South Africa. While shooting a closeup of Gerald the giraffe’s body and feet at the Glen Afric Country Lodge, the animal became “inquisitive” and headbutted him sending him 16 feet in the air and causing massive head injuries.

After the attack, he was airlifted to Johannesburg’s Milpark Hospital. He died on Wednesday night from his injuries. The announcement of his death was made via a statement on the film crew agency CallaCrew’s Facebook page: “It is with a very sad heart that we have to announce the passing of Carlos Carvalho‚ one of our favourite DOP’s. Carlos was filming a feature at Glen Afric and had a fatal run in with a giraffe on set. He was flown to Milpark Hospital but succumbed to his injuries 20:50 last night. Our thoughts and condolences go out to Carlo’s family and friends during this very sad time. He will be sorely missed.”

I'm sure he had a good heart, ITV is over in Europe I believe. Unsure.

The giraffe headbutted him.  Wild animals are wild animals, love them but one has to be careful.

@Freya @Sanguine The article said the giraffe headbutted him, throwing him 16 feet in the air. When giraffes fight for dominance, they use their heads literally, and their odd horns to thrash each other. It is likely the hit was worse than getting kicked by a thoroughbred. He may have suffered the head injury from the hit, or from impacting another object. Either way, it pays to remember that such critters are incredibly powerful and basically unpredictable. If the giraffe saw anything it perceived as a threat, he became the target.

On a softer, gentler note, I saw the bunny who lives in my lilac thicket this morning, sitting upright and alert when I came up on him/her. I just stopped and it stretched out on the ground, on its belly, obviously not threatened at all. You never know how wild animals will react, and sometimes, not even the domesticated ones.

The Cardinals had the class and grace to trade Stephen Piscotty to the Athletics last December so he could play close to his mother, who was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) last May. Sunday night, the lady lost her battle . . .

Gretchen Piscotty, mother of Athletics' Stephen Piscotty, dies at 55

. . . and, no matter his struggles on the mound, Yu Darvish of the Cubs opened his heart and his checkbook to Piscotty and his mother . . .

Yu Darvish donates $10,000 to ALS research in memory of Stephen Piscotty's mom

RIP Mrs. Piscotty . . . and Mr. Darvish, you, sir, have class.

Character still matters.  It always matters.

I wear a mask as an exercise in liberty and love for others.  To see it as an infringement of liberty is to entirely miss the point.  Be kind.

She's had some rough times.....

She and Christopher Reeve -- both gone way too soon.

I understand Ms. Kidder was manic-depressive.  I worked for an attorney who, after years of misdiagnosis and resulting poor, ineffective treatment, was finally correctly diagnosed   Last I heard he was part of an ongoing university study into manic-depression in an effort to develop better treatment.  He was doing much better last time I saw him.

Too bad Ms. Kidder was in such bad straits for all those years.  I hope she has peace now.

Me too.....

It sure is.  Especially if people don't take their meds.

It sure is.  Especially if people don't take their meds.

But... isn't it kind of like a Catch-22?   Like a diabetic needing a shot of insulin, they get in a state where they don't or won't take their meds.... cause it's already too late and they're having a reaction.  I know.... I used to give a gf her insulin shot at work.  Had to try to force her a couple of times because she argued that she didn't need it.  She did.

My guy friend in Houston was involved with a woman for several years that was bi-polar and her eventual issue was she wouldn't take her meds.  It was up to him to force her and that led to chaos.  It didn't last, needless to say.  She finally moved back to Louisiana and became her family's problem again.

Yes.  This often occurs with people with schizophrenia, too.  Often, the meds are effective...so the person then thinks he doesn't need them.

But even with medication, this condition can be a hell.  I feel for her, despite how flaming liberal she was, and concur with others that I hope she's found peace.

A former pastor of ours had a bipolar daughter who had that issue with her meds.  She took them and felt fine and then didn't take them and totally lost it, and ended up in the psych ward at the hospital repeatedly.

Tough disease.....

It depends on so many factors. Are they more Manic or more depressed. Are they fast or slow cycling, how severe are they. And a lot of it depends on the quality of your doctor and your relationship with them. My wife is Bi-polar Manic. She went undiagnosed for about 5 years. They thought it was Central Nervous system Lyme's disease. When she finally was diagnosed they had her a dosage that was way to strong. She was like a Zombie. She would sleep 12 hours a day, could not initiate a conversation, or do anything beyond the most rudimentary of tasks. Finally I stepped in and met with her Doctor. I wrote a letter to him explaining the problems so he would have a copy in writing. I told my wife that there  would be one of three results. 1) a reduction / change in her meds. 2) a second opinion 3) a different doctor. He decreased her dosage and left the practice shortly after that. She went through 2-3 temporary doctors until they found a permanent one for her. There have been some rough patches, but she does have a handle on it. I should add that she works at a Psychiatric hospital and sees what happens when they don't take their meds. She is bound to control this and not let it control her.

The problem is that the meds themselves are terrible. The side effects can be as bad as the disease you are trying to cure. They rob you of youur personality. , your soul.  They can cause ur liver and/or kidney to. Fail. Tardive dyskinesia is fun too,

Catatonic brings ECT.. it might take years to find the right med cocktail

Like I said I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy.

He had me from boyhood, his years with New York when it was the Sunday magazine offering of the dying New York Herald-Tribune and from his first anthology, The Kandy Kolored Tangerine Flake Streamline Baby. (The original headline on the title article, first published in Esquire: "There Goes (Varoom! Varoom!) That Kandy-Kolored (Thphhhhhh!) Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby (Rahghhh!) Around the Bend (Brummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm) . . . . . ."; the article was about George Barris and the 1960s car customisers.) Few were so deft at harpooning the pretenses creeping into culture the way he did in such work as The Pump House Gang, The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, Radical Chic and Mau-Mauing the Flak Catchers, The Painted Word, and From Bauhaus to Our House.

RIP Mr. Wolfe. Your books still occupy some of the most reachable space on my shelves.
