@mountaineer

Interesting that nothing like that story was even mentioned yesterday among all the positively glowing tributes to Mrs. Mandela.

I don't know about you, but I am getting a little "tired"

If he'd given nothing more than Hill Street Blues, Mr. Bochco would have been a television immortal. RIP.
I agree. That was a great show.

Of course not. And no one cared that the ANC was a Marxist organization.  **nononono*

Oh, but if you happened to be light skinned and opposed the ANC, why you were (all together, now) "RASIS!". No one wanted to think about their politics, although that was a successful early venture of identity politics, indeed. But, considering, what did they win? The country went from being an economic powerhouse and nuclear power to its present 'Glory'.

@TomSea

Thanks for posting this.  It's big news here in western PA.  I'm not a fan of professional wrestling, so I don't really know Mr. Sullivan (his real name).  The story here locally is that he was crossing in the middle of a heavily traveled and dangerous road (McKnight Road) when he was struck.  I'm guessing he wasn't at an intersection with traffic lights and/or "Walk-Don't Walk"  signals.  Not a good idea to jaywalk on Mc Knight Road.  That road is dangerous enough for drivers, let alone pedestrians.

Rest in peace, Mr. Sullivan.

Belated:
Edwin Hawkins, gospel singer, dies at 74

Hawkins, the leader of a California black gospel choir known as the "Edwin Hawkins Singers," is most famous for his 1969 hit record, "Oh Happy Day" (not to be confused with the Lawrence Welk staple of the same name). An adaptation of an eighteenth-century hymn, it went on to become a top-5 hit in multiple countries.

Hawkins had one other chart hit to his name: "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)," a collaboration with folk singer Melanie Safka.

Hawkins died way back on January 15 (sorry it took me this long to find it) from pancreatic cancer.

I met Edwin Hawkins at a Choral Associates convention back in the '80's, and heard a small choral group perform "Oh, Happy Day" to perfection.  It was like being swept away to heaven.

He had a remarkable gift, and it will be missed.

He has been with His Savior since January!  Praise the Lord!

Did you see the movie, Secretariat?   When they play it at the end, I cry every single time!

That's maybe my favourite movie about horse racing ever. The book was even better.

And Penny Chenery, Secretariat's owner, went to heaven last September at 95.

Secretariat, Belmont Stakes, 1973

To this day I've never seen a more staggering performance than Secretariat's Belmont to win the Crown.

That's probably because there's never BEEN a more staggering performance.   ^-^

I think the whole world was watching that race, with mouths agape, and hearts beating faster.

Stunning moment in time.

Maybe the closest for staggering was the Affirmed/Alydar rivalry and the so-close finish in their Belmont Stakes.

I couldn't watch horse racing after what happened to Ruffian.
Ruffian, tragically, was a unique case:

* The actual injury to her happened when she was startled by a bird on the track infield and took a bad step, which would almost have to have been catastrophic
for a horse with a soft-boned lineage, even a horse as strong otherwise as Ruffian was.

* Ruffian was a granddaughter of Native Dancer---who was somewhat infamous for having a soft-boned skeletal structure and also sired a likewise soft-boned
son, Raise a Native. (One Raise a Native son who managed to avoid the line's soft bones was another racing legend: Alydar.)

* Her sire, Reviewer, suffered three breakdowns as a racer and the fourth, at stud, killed him.

* Her dam, Shenanigans, who never raced but was considered a top broodmare, was put down after eventually breaking two legs coming out of anesthetic following
intestinal surgery.

* Ruffian's jockey for the match race, Jacinto Velasquez, tried to pull her up to stop when he heard the crack that proved her injury but Ruffian wouldn't stop. Say
what you will otherwise, that horse had an overendowment of spirit.

* Ruffian actually underwent successful surgery for her leg injury . . . but she re-injured herself violently when she thrashed about coming out of anesthesia, both
undoing the surgical repair and concurrently shattering her own elbow with her own plaster cast.

* Veterinarians normally knew how to handle horses thrashing violently coming out of anesthesia until Ruffian's case, but Ruffian's reaction and death provoked
the creation of a recovery pool into which a horse is placed so they come out of the anesthesia in comfortable warm water.

Milos Forman, the anti-authoritarian director who left his native Czechoslovakia for creative freedom in the U.S. and captured Oscars for the masterpieces One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Amadeus, has died. He was 86.

Forman, also known for two biopics about controversial Americans — The People vs. Larry Flynt (1996) and Man on the Moon (1999) — died Friday after a short illness, according to his wife, Martina, who broke the news to the Czech news agency CTK.

His manager, Dennis Aspland, confirmed Forman's death to The Hollywood Reporter. The filmmaker died in Danbury Hospital, near his home in Warren, Connecticut.

William Nack, Author of Secretariat Book That Spawned the Movie, Dies at 77

Quote
William Nack, the esteemed thoroughbred-racing writer from Sports Illustrated whose book about Secretariat paved the way for the popular 2010 film about the legendary Triple Crown winner, has died. He was 77.

Nack died Friday at his Washington home from complications associated with cancer, his family announced.

Nack spent 23 years at SI through 2001, then penned freelance articles for ESPN, GQ and others. He received seven Eclipse Awards for excellence in writing about horse racing, the first in 1978, the last in 2003.

"He stands among the best sportswriters in the history of the genre, and in many ways, among the best writers of any kind," SI senior writer Tim Layden wrote in a tribute piece. "When he stopped typing, he was a giant personality, full of endless good charm, disarmingly well-read and all times, given to entertain."

In 1973, Secretariat was the first horse to break the two-minute mark in winning the Kentucky Derby, then became the first Triple Crown champion since Citation in 1948 when he captured the Belmont Stakes by a jaw-dropping 31 lengths.

Nack's 1975 book, Secretariat: The Making of a Champion, was adapted by screenwriter Mike Rich for the Randall Wallace film at Disney that starred Diane Lane and John Malkovich. The author appeared in the movie as a reporter and served as a consultant as well . . .
----------------------------------------------------
I have and have read Mr. Nack's Secretariat: The Making of a Champion numerous times. It's the best book I have ever read
about horse racing. And I consider Mr. Nack one of the nation's greatest sportswriters ever---right there with Red Smith, Shirley
Povich, Thomas Boswell, Roger Angell (no, Angell isn't baseball's Homer; Homer was ancient Greece's Roger Angell), Jim Murray,
Barry Svrluga, and Jay Jaffe.

RIP, Mr. Nack. Mrs. Chenery has a hug and a kiss waiting for you through the gates.

One more time, for you, Mr. Nack . . .

Harry Anderson, comic actor of Night Court and Dave's World fame, dies at 65

Anderson first rose to fame in the early 1980s during the "dark era" of Saturday Night Live, as a recurring guest. Originally trained as a magician, Anderson's comic acting skills soon led to a recurring guest role on Cheers, then to his most famous role, that of Judge Harry Stone, the befuddled not-quite-straight man on the long-running sitcom Night Court. Unusually for a sitcom actor, he followed that role up with another successful one, playing real-life columnist Dave Barry for the sitcom Dave's World, which ran four seasons.

Anderson mostly withdrew from the public spotlight after the late 1990s, making occasional guest appearances and spending the last decade of his life in Asheville, North Carolina. He was found dead there April 16 of what his son described only as "natural causes."

RIP Harry, you will be missed.

NOTE: My previous report on Barbara Bush has been retracted. I cannot verify. Lone link I have found appears to be a fake news link (breaking-cnn.com, which is not the real CNN).

Yes.  To old timers like me, 65 is a spring chicken.  I'm 65.  Kids think I'm ancient.  LOL

Rest in peace, Mr. Anderson and thanks for the laughs.

At one point or another in my life I have drank with, or stood in front of more Judges than I care to remember.  But when they spoke of their courtroom experiences they all said  they dealt with the same type of characters Judge Stone worked with- a womanizing prosecutor, a cynical chain-smoking bailiff, a couple of idealistic public defenders and a steady stream of bizarre and/or hilarious defendants, plaintiffs, and prosecuting witnesses.

RIP Harry.
