The FBI has reopened its investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private server while secretary of state after discovering new emails – apparently during the probe of former Rep. Anthony Weiner’s sexting – in a stunning turn of events just days before the presidential election.

FBI Director James Comey wrote in a letter to top members of Congress Friday that the bureau has “learned of the existence of emails that appear to be pertinent to the investigation.”

Comey did not detail those emails, saying only that they surfaced “in connection with an unrelated case.”

An FBI source, though, confirmed to Fox News that the new emails were discovered after the bureau seized devices belonging to disgraced Rep. Weiner and his wife Huma Abedin, a top Clinton aide who recently announced she was separating from the former congressman. The New York Times first reported on the Weiner investigation connection, noting the FBI had been probing texts Weiner sent to a 15-year-old girl.

I looked it up. The story broke over a month ago that Weiner - with his baby present - was sexting a 15 year old girl. The FBI began investigating immediately.

But it took them over a month to find some Hillary emails on his device?

Right now we're all talking in a vacuum but I want to adhere that in the last, oh, 36, 48 hours, there has been an undercurrent of kind of speculative discussion among some national security people that something might surface in the next few days about e-mails, and I think the expectation in this chatter -- and I took it as just chatter but informed chatter, to some extent -- was that it would relate to another round of WikiLeaks e-mails, which our Justice Department people seem to be saying is not the case, but there has been some noise in the national security community the last day or two of this kind of possibility of some kind of revelation.

This suggests to me that Comey has taken the last two days to weigh the consequences of taking action or doing nothing.
Also note that he is reopening an old case, not creating a new case.

His July decision to not recommend prosecution HAS to be a factor in this new decision.
Either he was unsure of his previous decision (who wouldn't be) and/or he has had a lot of internal pressure (likely)

And if he has taken two days to come to this decision, this is NOT a "form letter", as has been suggested by a previous poster.

I'm not a true cynic -- my optimistic side always seems to get the better of me.  But I am a bit cynical about Comey's motives. 

Nevertheless, the mere fact of the letter is huge, and damaging to the Clinton campaign.  Comey wouldn't have written it unless the contents of Wiener's unit had serious implications for the server-gate investigation.  It has to mean there are national security implications.  And I think it means that any immunity deals for Huma are null and void.  Huma, at least, is going down.

Anyway, if CYA was the main intent, it didn't work.  This story has has already spiraled waaaayyyyy beyond their control.

BRIAN FALLON: I think we just need to review the facts of what happened here...

The [FBI] concluded on that first week of July that there was no case to be brought here. It was not even a close call. in the weeks since, we saw Jason Chaffetz and other Republicans who were disappointed in the outcome seeking to relitigate the handling, and calling Director Comey, who throughout his career has been someone of utmost integrity and professional reputation who was the number two in the Bush Justice Department.

They suggested that there were quid pro quos involving FBI officials even after the FBI denied it.

Donald Trump himself have called the bureau's integrity into question. And I think it would be unfortunate if all of that the reputation tarnishing that the Congressional Republicans have been engaging in is what prompted this. I don't know that to be true.

But I know it is an extraordinary and unprecedented step for something like this to be conveyed 11 days before an election and to be sent to Republican chairmen who have shown no discretion for keeping anything confidential, and it had to be known that a document like this would get out. So now that it is out, the American people need to have the full facts.

When Director Comey said this was something arising from an unrelated matter to the case that was closed in July, he now owes us an explanation for why there is any connection being drawn to Hillary Clinton at all... When he includes for the possibility that these e-mails may be insignificant, he needs to tell us why he sent this letter if the possibility still exists that these materials are insignificant.

We are fully confident that however long it takes, there will be no conclusion drawn that would change the out come of the investigation that was wrapped up in July.

We think at this point it is incumbent on Director Comey and the FBI to go further than what is contained in this letter and hold another press conference if that's what it takes. To to the public explain what relevance this has on the decision that voters were making when they go to the polls and choose between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. We don't think there is any connection.

I've always thought it was one of her aides that would go down.  Mills, for various reasons, is too well protected.  But Abedin is protected only by Hillary, and that may not be enough.  The problems for Hillary is that not only is Abedin recognized as one of her two closest aides -- which puts Hillary's own judgment in relying on her at issue -- but it was Hillary's underlying misconduct for which Abedin is paying the price.  Hillary will be symbolic of every crooked boss who offered up a subordinate as a sacrifice to save their own butt.
