It's interesting to speculate about the source of the new e-mails: is it wikileaks? Guccifer? Somebody else? Whatever the source or the contents, Comey sees them as admitting no delay beyond the election.

Considering the letter states that the FBI doesn't know what is in the emails they just got...

...Comey doesn't know if they are significant or not.

Just that they exist.

More than that. It's e-mails from "an unrelated case" that are sufficiently significant to cause his investigators to recommend, and him to agree, to re-open, with a public letter, a high-profile, big-noise investigation that had supposedly exonerated Clinton, and to do so just 11 days before the election.

It's not entirely clear to me what's actually going on -- but it's unusual, and damaging to Clinton's campaign.

When in the Obama era has the FBI proven itself worthy of our trust? The last time they conducted an 'investigation' into Clinton's server they granted immunity willy nilly & destroyed the evidence.

Seems like they consider themselves more a damage control team for the state than a law enforcement organization. Kinda like the roll of HR in most corporations.

A better strategy is probably to release the information through non-government sources.

Well, somehow those wikileaks are getting out there. Might not result in any dramatic collapse but the drip drip of revelations is doing more damage to her than what the FBI came up with - "yeah she acted feloniously but no, nothing was prosecutable."

I don't know what it is, but of all the things about which I am most worried, a Russian nuclear strike would be one of them. I don't think that's what he means, so it's probably referring to some sort of major political upheaval.

We are all jaded to some degree or another. As most of us have been political observers over decades of time, how could we not be? But the timing is so extraordinary, with potential reverberations so huge, that this feels different to me. Maybe it is nothing. It is probably nothing even.
