Just watched SONS of LIBERTY <again> Prime

Really strange now recognizing the cast members become stars playing in other roles

Whenever I am depressed, I tend to watch a few episodes of the TV show Chuck, with Zachary Levi and Yvonne Strahovski.

Always a barrel of laughs, and Yvonne is great eye candy.

The English: Set in the mythic mid-American landscape in the year of 1890, The English follows Cornelia Locke, an Englishwoman who arrives into the new and wild landscape of the West to wreak revenge on the man she sees as responsible for the death of her son. Upon meeting Eli Whipp, an ex-cavalry scout and member of the Pawnee Nation by birth, they join together and discover a shared history which must be defeated at all costs, if either of them are to survive.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Pretty Good!

The English is a pretty good western that's absolutely worth watching. It does start a little slow but by the end of episode 2 it picks up. Each episode just gets better and better. You really come to care for these characters by how well written and acted they are. I'd be shocked if Emily Blunt wasn't nominated for some awards for her job in this. She's that good in this. As is the vastly underrated Chaske Spencer, who's good in just about everything I've ever seen him in. It's a beautifully shot series that captures the reality of the old West. It's a mini series that's only six episodes long so it won't take long to binge it and it's worth every second?

This past weekend, watched "The Lathe of Heaven", which was originally made as a tv-movie for PBS many years ago. It can be found, if you look for it.

For this coming weekend, I was able to scrounge up a 4k version of "Clockwork Orange". It's been some years since I watched it, and this will be the first-ever film I try out in "full 4k resolution" (using a 27" 4k display).

One of Kirk Douglas finest performances, IMHO.  Upcoming on TCM.

Just watched the Starship Troopers movies, in chronological order.
That includes the original Starship Troopers, and the 4 sequels:Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation (2004), Starship Troopers 3: Marauder (2008), Starship Troopers: Invasion (2012), and Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars (2017)

While the plots and circumstances of that fictional Federation never quite sat comfortably in my brain, I now know why.

Heinlein managed to create a culture that was in the middle (?) of an endless existential war against the bugs (Klendathu).

As a result, in that perpetual state of war, a society where citizenship was contingent on military service, and ruled by military suthority.
The totalitarian aftertaste of such movies isn't imaginary, because the Sky Marshall could declare anyone, even those civilians not under direct military authority otherwise, an enemy of the Federation and order their execution.
Infantry were routinely thrown into battle with weapons which required numerous hits to disable or kill the enemy. You would think a priority would be placed on weapons heavy enough to achieve one shot kills, instead of the multiple rounds needed. Of course, a decisive advantage would mean the war might come to an end, and with it the justification for the tightly held totalitarian government model.

The Mars settlers are routinely demeaned for wanting freedom.

One of the Sky Marshals was willing to destroy the planet (Mars) partly as an example of what happens to those who do not submit to the Federation without question, even though they had known about an infestation of the Klendathu on Mars for years and allowed it to develop to the point where destroying the planet seemed the viable choice.

That seeming viability was because communications from the planet had been cut off, and the truth was censored.

Decisions were being made based on the polled popularity of the Sky Marshall, not what was good policy, and even if they had been made on good policy, total control over media ensured that the people would think the decisions of the Sky Marshall were correct because their information was filtered.

(Only the actions of a few kept the destruction of the planet from becoming a reality, but this is fiction.)

It isn't hard to find unpleasant parallels in the well managed conflicts on our globe where the factions change slowly, but the troops and weapons keep getting cranked out, and the conflicts remain unresolved because there's a lot of money in killing and mutilating the youth of the world, and someone is cashing in and converting political capital. Where somehow, weapons manage to be at parity or nearly so, either through genuine development of weapons systems independently, or by someone stealing or selling the hard won technology to one or more enemies. All power structures benefit from this near balance, and all profit handsomely, even if their citizens are doomed to serfdom by the expenditures necessary to maintain the razor thin edge on their potential enemies.
If that requires "filtering" the information the masses are given, so be it.
If it requires the censorship of those who won't be 'filtered', done.
If those still won't shut up, there are ways, from 'accidents' to 'suicides' to 'tragic' and 'terrorist' acts, even if the government has to perpetrate them itself.

No matter how seemingly benevolent it may be to some, totalitarianism is what it is.
It is the only way creatures which lack a true hive-mind (like the Klendathu, that fictional adversary possess) can be induced to perform as if they had one, either willingly through accepting religiously the dogmatic propaganda to which they are subjected, or through the fear of reprisal.

We're seeing the results of filtered information, of the near hive-minded "thought" of large segments of our society, and like ants from different colonies, the clash is coming.

I still believe in the ideals our Founders sought to enshrine in a Government which prized the individual's Rights, with a minimum of governmental interference, clear cut rules, and the strength to apply them equally for all. However, we haven't had that except to pay lip service to that ideal during my lifetime. It would be nice to have it back for my grandchildren.

Seventeen Techniques for Truth Suppression

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

...

Please don't use the movies as a basis to critique Heinlein. Other than borrowing the settings and characters, the original movie had little to do with the book that Heinlein wrote. The director, Paul Verhoeven, famously decided to make the movie into a satire of fascism, and totally ignored the political and philosophical underpinnings of the Federation government that were presented in the book.

The later movies have even less to do with the book, which had no sequels.

You should read the book. It is remarkably short by modern standards.
After 40 years of being lied to by people who called themselves "Conservatives", I no longer consider myself to be a "Conservative".

We took the grandkids to see “Wicked” yesterday. I love musicals, but this one was just ok. I know it’s the hottest thing around, but I thought it was meh.
The singing was very good, but the songs were utterly forgettable. My opinion only.

Last weekend:
"The Chronicles of Melanie" (2016), about a woman from Latvia who was deported by the Soviets to the gulag in the early 1940's. Was very good.

You can find a copy to download here:
https://archive.org/details/the.-chronicles.of.-melanie.-2016.1080p.-web-dl.x-264.-aac.-hori-zon-art-subs
There's an online player, but I don't know if the subtitles will work through it.
Better to download from the same page, here's the torrent link:
https://archive.org/download/the.-chronicles.of.-melanie.-2016.1080p.-web-dl.x-264.-aac.-hori-zon-art-subs/the.-chronicles.of.-melanie.-2016.1080p.-web-dl.x-264.-aac.-hori-zon-art-subs_archive.torrent
The "mkv" file (which you can play with a viewer) contains the English subtitle track as well.

This weekend:
"The Dead Zone".
Never have seen it before, thought I might have a look...

When the stage production debuted, I just found the entire premise uninteresting. I'm probably too invested in the 1939 "Wizard of Oz" to care about a prequel. Also, it's a little bit of overkill, seeing the two lead actresses everywhere, every single time I turn on the TV.

I'll think awhile before I watch the movie when I finally get it on tv, but probably will out of curiosity. I was sorely disappointed in the  West Side Story remake.

I had season tickets for many years to the Dallas musicals. Saw Wicked twice. Really not too bad. But as far as memorable songs...not so much. Frankly, I find that to be true of most of the modern musicals. IMNSHO the '50's/60's musicals ruled that!

The Greatest Showman was an absolutely good modern musical.

Speaking of Emily Blunt, she did an awesome job with Mary Poppins.  She is quite the old school talent.
