Fears of sabotage as gas pours into Baltic from Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines

Gas is pouring into the Baltic Sea from three separate leaks on the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines amid claims by seismologists in Sweden and Denmark of two sharp spikes in undersea activity, possibly indicating explosions, and speculation about sabotage.

A seismograph on the Danish island of Bornholm, near where the leaks occurred, twice recorded spikes on Monday, the day on which the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines underwent dramatic falls in pressure, the German geological research centre GFZ said.

A Danish military flight over the leaks brought back striking images from the ruptures, including one showing an area of bubbling gas a kilometre wide on the sea’s surface.

The seismograph recorded near-silence until just after midnight GMT (2am local time), when there was a spike representing a tremor in the earth followed by a continuous hissing wave form. The pattern was repeated at 5pm GMT.

Amid the speculation over sabotage, suspicion immediately turned to potential culprits – with fingers pointed at Russia, whose pipelines were hit, suggesting a further weaponisation of energy supplies to Europe in the midst of the conflict in Ukraine. Not least it was seen as a possible message about the vulnerability of other marine gas infrastructure.

STOCKHOLM/COPENHAGEN, Sept 27 (Reuters) - Europe was investigating on Tuesday what Germany, Denmark and Sweden said were attacks which had caused major leaks into the Baltic Sea from two Russian gas pipelines at the centre of an energy standoff.

But it remained far from clear who might be behind the leaks that were first reported on Monday or any foul play, if proven, on the Nord Stream pipelines that Russia and European partners spent billions of dollars building.

German Economy Minister Robert Habeck told business leaders the leaks were due to targeted attacks on the infrastructure and Berlin now knew for sure "that they were not caused by natural occurrences or events or material fatigue."

Sweden's and Denmark's prime ministers said the leaks were clearly caused by deliberate actions, with information suggesting likely sabotage, while Poland's premier blamed sabotage, without citing evidence.

Mysterious leaks in the Nord Stream gas pipe network began with "powerful subsea blasts" and resulted from "deliberate actions".

Two pipelines running underwater from Russia to Germany were damaged in a total of three places on Monday.

The two pipes were damaged near the Danish island of Bornholm in the southern Baltic Sea.

The Kremlin said it could not rule out sabotage as a cause of the damage, with spokesman Dmitry Peskov describing developments as "very concerning news".

A European security source said: "There are some indications that it is deliberate damage. You have to ask: Who would profit?"

A reading from a nearby seismograph, which records vibrations on the planet's surface, was found to show spikes at similar times to when the losses in pressure in the pipes were first recorded, according to a German geology research centre.

BERLIN, Sept 27 (Reuters) - The U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) had weeks ago warned Germany about possible attacks on gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea, German magazine Spiegel said on Tuesday, after gas leaks in Russia pipelines to Germany were reported.

The German government received the CIA tip in summer, Spiegel reported, citing unnamed sources, adding that Berlin assumes a targeted attack on Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines.

A German government spokesperson declined to comment, Spiegel added.

Yesterday evening, pressure in the undersea Nord Stream 2 pipeline suddenly collapsed, and gas could be seen bubbling to the surface of the Baltic Sea near the Danish island of Bornholm. Shortly afterwards, reports came of a total collapse in the pressure of our other major undersea pipeline connection to Russia, Nord Stream 1, indicating a further rupture.

Government officials assume that the damage is intentional, and the result of an attack by foreign forces:

    Due to the timing, the fact that three separate pipelines were affected1, and the severe pressure losses in Nord Stream 1, officials expect the worst. “We can no longer imagine any scenario other than a targeted attack,” said a person privy to the assessment by the federal government and federal authorities. They added: “Everything speaks against a coincidence.”

    Such an attack on the seabed would be anything but trivial; it would have to be carried out with special forces – for example, by navy divers or a submarine, people informed of initial assessments said.

    With regard to responsibility for the alleged attacks, two possibilities are being discussed. First, according to initial speculation, Ukrainian or Ukrainian-affiliated forces could be responsible. With the temporary shutdown of the Nord Stream pipelines, gas deliveries from Russia to Germany and Central Europe would only be possible via the Yamal pipelinje running through Poland or the Ukrainian pipeline network.

The piece that I’ve bolded is of course a lightly disguised reference to the United States or NATO. This should surprise nobody: President Biden said in early February that in the event of a Russian invasion of Ukraine, “there will be no longer a Nord Stream 2, we will bring an end to it.”   ...

Poland’s President and the Prime Ministers of Poland and Denmark are inaugurating the new Baltic Pipe in this very moment.

It will bring 10 billion cubic meters of Norwegian gas to Poland every year.

Ironic that it is being opened on the same day that Nord Stream disappeared.

No doubt Pedo Joe has declared full war on the hydrocarbon industry.  He has made no secret about that.

If he and his band of industrial terrorist hit squad can pull this off, what makes anyone think he won't do the same to some pipeline, refinery, or off shore platform in our country?

I can only think of one outfit that has that level of capability and crazed activism, and that is Green Peace.  But, this operation does 't fit their M.O.

I am 95% sure due to the level of explosives, and use of divers, that this was governmentally sponsored.  And I were to bet, I'd wager it was ours.

Tucker Carlson was about as clear as it comes tonight without fulling accusing Biden.  IMO.....Pedo Joe has upped his war on hydocarbon a couple of notches, and this probably is the 1st violent salvo.

You don't really need divers if you know exactly where the pipe is. With current sonar tech I'm sure it is pretty easy to scan the bottom and see exactly where the pipe is. Just drop your explosives right on it.
