How Houston Lost Its Mind Over a Trump Shirt
« on: July 08, 2018, 07:52:03 pm »
This story in Texas Monthly is long, almost a book but very interesting because of the way it played out.

It's about a confrontation in an ice cream parlor when Kellye came in with her family and spotted 4 teens, one of whom had a souvenir shirt on that said "Trump."

This enraged Kellye to the point that she screamed out an appropriate remark at the girls.

Inspired by Wendy Davis to run for office, Kellye was also serving as a member of the West University Place City Council, where she enjoyed working on wonky issues like zoning and recycling.

That was what Kellye thought. But what she did was this: She gave what was—to her—an irreverent cheer, followed by a sarcastic shout-out in which she quoted one of the president’s most infamous lines. “Grab ’em by the bleep!” she declared, adding a fist pump. Then she repeated herself and punctuated her cheer with “Woohoo! MAGA!”

No one can deny that what Kellye did was profoundly dumb, and dumber still given the state of the country and given the politics of West U. The Neighborhood City is not only wealthy but also nearly 90 percent white, which can make it seem more homogeneous than many other Houston communities. Politically, though, the area is almost evenly divided, and therefore evenly polarized, between Democrats and Republicans.

I really recommend reading this story.  It's satisfying because of what eventually happened to the woman who felt justified in shouting the 'bleep' remark at a group of young teens.

It's hard to take a "Kellye" seriously.

The link doesn’t go to the story, just to the magazine.  Is it possible to get a link directly to the story?

OK, she didn't make a "stupid mistake".  What she did was deliberate and over the line.  She did issue a decent apology, which is unusual in this day and age.  The other side may have gotten a little too amped up, too, but given the bias with which the story is written, it's hard to tell.

Wow.  What a story.  I have to say that I have almost zero sympathy for Kellye; if she wants to see why, she should look at the sort of conduct that is now considered appropriate by democrats and liberals when it comes to voicing their opposition to anything or anyone.

Unfortunately, I doubt if much wisdom will be learned by anyone on either side of this.  Too bad.

The story is indeed very poorly written, and focuses completely on the things that happened to Kelley, while ignoring what she did.  The fact that she's an "official" is glossed over, but that has a lot to do with why people are outraged.

The fact is, she hollered profanities at a teenager in a public place, and was doing her best to rile up the bystanders against the girl.  She deserves whatever she gets, good and hard.

Honestly, I think it was a fairly balanced story altogether.  It didn’t whitewash either side, and it didn’t simply write off what happened to Kellye as illegitimate or deplorable.  And it took at face value the parents’ concerns that their children were afraid and had been victimized.  It also made it at least somewhat clear that a lot of the worst stuff wasn’t even coming from within the community but from outsiders.  If anything got slighted in the story, in my view, it was the recall campaign.   I think that a recall campaign is a reasonable response to misbehavior by an elected representative, and it gives the community - as opposed to outsiders - the ability to decide with their vote whether they think the individual in question has redeemed herself or not.

It is, actually, a cautionary tale in just how toxic social media can be.

...and short on content.  They were so busy trying to make us feel sorry for poor, poor Kelley I had to struggle to find out what happened.  My hands are empty.

Indeed it is.  I counted that as a blessing before I wrote that post.  Saves me having to find one of those baggies they give out at the dog park.
