Survey: Historians rank Obama 12th best president

By Cristiano Lima

02/17/17 03:26 PM EST

Historians have ranked Barack Obama the 12th best president of all time, the highest rated since President Ronald Reagan, in a new C-SPAN survey released Friday.

Less than a month after exiting the White House, Obama received high marks from presidential historians for his pursuit of "equal justice for all" and for his commanding "moral authority," ranking third and seventh among all former presidents in each respective category. The 44th president also cracked a top 10 ranking for his "economic management" and public persuasion.

How the heck did he rate higher than Polk? Glad to Jefferson beat him though.

Some folks here like Coolidge and Coolidge was indeed, a great president (civil rights, etc.), but the list has him at 27, Nixon at 28. I can see why Nixon would not be rated high but it still looks like a bogus list.

Criteria not listed. Very uncertain as to the listing.

Realize something here: it's an entirely subjective listing, based on the opinion of a group of people employed in colleges, universities and "think tank" foundations—a mostly liberal lot, of course.

Note that three of the top four oversaw expansive growth of government power. Note that President Lincoln gets first but everyone before and after him rank in the bottom three. Lincoln waged a bloody war against his own people. FDR of course established the entitlement system we have today. Teddy established the bureaucracy. Note that LBJ, who expanded the entitlement system to the modern level, is listed in the top 10, even though he botched Vietnam and ended up having to bow out of re-election in disgrace.

Yet Coolidge ranks 28th, even though the country was prosperous under him and the government actually paid down the national debt; he gets blamed for Hoover.

The liberal bias is obvious.

History's judgment - as opposed to that of a bunch of left-wing academics who call themselves historians - will be much less charitable to Obuttocks.

So, you would prefer a president who allowed Slavery?

Lincoln was the best president, it's not his fault if some people defended a modern day evil.

That makes me lose faith in whoever those 'historians' are.  His supposed virtue was that he would make race relations better.  In fact, he was a black president elected by whites.

In fact, he made them worse and did nothing of note except pass a failed health care plan and make us weaker as a nation against enemies.

I didn't say that.

Was ending slavery, an achievement the rest of the Western world managed to pull off far more peaceably, worth the brutal war, the loss of rights, and the gross expansion of the U.S. government's power? Furthermore, why does Lincoln get all the credit when most of the longer-term effects of Lincoln's power grab took place under Johnson and Grant? We're still dealing with the misapplication of the 14th Amendment to this day!

George Washington was 1st
Abraham Lincoln was 2nd
13 others were tied for 3rd
29 were tied for 4th
Obama was 5th

Obama's greatest attribute as President is that he spent so much time golfing, or on vacation, or partying, or sleeping, or fund raising, or campaigning, or just generally goofing off, that he got very little of what he wanted to do done.

If Obama had been anything at all like Trump, we would all be living in a totalitarian State by now. There would be no elections, no guns, and all media: radio, television, print, and internet, would be controlled by the White House. And, America would be absolutely flooded with Muslims from all over the world.

Thank God for Obama's immaturity. Obama's laziness saved America as we know it.

Great points @240B --- had Obama had energy and focus, he would have destroyed us.  Thank God for Obama's bong.  :smokin:

If only he were.  I think he's working harder now than when he was the laziest president.

He's having fun trying to discredit Trump.

I would point out that the rest of the world didn't have a large section of their country willing to launch a brutal rebellion to defend slavery.

The Civil War was not primarily about slavery. It was about the right of States vs. the Federal.
