Gary Johnson, the Libertarian candidate was a popular New Mexico Governor. He is likely to hurt Trump badly in this state that went Obama in 2012.

Serious question -- if Johnson is an open borders, popular guy in NM, isn't there a chance that he'd actually take a lot more from Hillary than from Trump?

I can't stand people who say that, along with people who say "Take my word for it," or this personal favorite, "Trust me".

McCain used to say, "My friend"........... I always said to myself, "You ain't my friend"........

There is no contradiction. Trump energizes turn out. New Mexico has a GOP turn out problem understandably. And the alternative is the America destroying Hillary who has higher negatives then Trump.

I know Hillary and I think she'd make a great president or vice president.  Hillary is smart, tough, and a very nice person.  Bill Clinton was a great president.  They are fine people.

Wrong.  Not a single poll has Hillary with higher unfavorables than Trump.  None.

I happen to agree with you about the relative disdain for these two thugs, but I really hate polls (even when I agree with them).

I'd encourage you to watch a replay of the rally.  It's the only way you'll understand why crowds are cheering.

Yep, Trump energizes turn out...protesters who smash doors, break through barriers, and light fires.  You would have me believe that DEMS didn't turn out to vote for him in the primaries to make him the nominee against Hillary; why now?

Smoke and mirrors. The entire primary energized turnout. All the candidates got numbers way in excess of past elections. Most of those were Republicans who usually didn't vote in primaries.

You have no way of showing that this will extrapolate to Indies and Dems.

I've seen some of his material on FNC, and he is indeed a very motivational speaker.  If that's all one has to go on, a couple hours is all that's needed to get people crawling through broken glass to vote for him.

The trouble starts when folks pay more attention to him than just his speeches.

He was talking about the economic climate in NM.  And from the rousing applause and cheering from the crowd, they agreed with Trump.

 :bs:

She has consistently maintained a Reagan-like approval rating that falls between 60-65% among Republicans and 44%+ among Democrats.    They are cheering and applauding because its a Trump rally and they would cheer and applaud anything he says.

This is Jujitsu using the Enemies tools against them. A NYT article:
...
A review of public polling, extensive interviews with a host of his supporters in two states and a new private survey that tracks voting records all point to the conclusion that Mr. Trump has built a broad, demographically and ideologically diverse coalition, constructed around personality, not substance, that bridges demographic and political divides.
...
In poll after poll of Republicans, Mr. Trump leads among women, despite having used terms like “fat pigs” and “disgusting animals” to denigrate some of them. He leads among evangelical Christians, despite saying he had never had a reason to ask God for forgiveness. He leads among moderates and college-educated voters, despite a populist and anti-immigrant message thought to resonate most with conservatives and less-affluent voters. He leads among the most frequent, likely voters, even though his appeal is greatest among those with little history of voting.
...
His support is not tethered to a single issue or sentiment: immigration, economic anxiety or an anti-establishment mood. Those factors may have created conditions for his candidacy to thrive, but his personality, celebrity and boldness, not merely his populism and policy stances, have let him take advantage of them.

Tellingly, when asked to explain support for Mr. Trump in their own words, voters of varying backgrounds used much the same language, calling him “ballsy” and saying they admired that he “tells it like it is” and relished how he “isn’t politically correct.”

New Mexico governor's office blasts Trump's "pot shots"

CBS News

Following Donald Trump's Tuesday night criticisms of New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez, the Republican governor's office is out with its own scathing critique of the presumptive GOP nominee.

"The Governor will not be bullied into supporting a candidate until she is convinced that candidate will fight for New Mexicans," Mike Lonergan, Martinez's press secretary, told CBS News in an email. "Governor Martinez doesn't care about what Donald Trump says about her -- she cares about what he says he will do to help New Mexicans."

Lonergan added that Martinez, who is also the chairwoman of the Republican Governors Association, was "disappointed that she didn't hear anything about" such proposals during Trump's Tuesday rally in Albuquerque.

While protests raged outside of the Albuquerque Convention Center last night, Trump leveled attacks at the state's chief executive, despite her position as with Trump's own party.

"Since 2000, the number of people on food stamps in New Mexico has tripled," Trump told a raucous crowd. "We have to get your governor to get going. She's got to do a better job. Okay? Your governor has got to do a better job. She's not doing the job."

But Martinez, on the receiving end of Trump's criticisms after she declined to attend the rally citing a busy schedule, dismissed the comments, per her press secretary.

"Apparently, Donald Trump doesn't realize Governor Martinez wasn't elected in 2000, that she has fought for welfare reform, and has strongly opposed the President's Syrian refugee plan," Lonergan said, touting Martinez's conservative policy bona fides. "The pot shots weren't about policy, they were about politics."

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, a former rival of Trump's who had received Martinez's endorsement while he was a presidential candidate, also defended Martinez.

Could be true. Johnson is at about 10% when put in the National Presidential polling with Clinton and Trump. With the high unfavorables with Clinton and Trump he is probably drawing from both. He is probably stronger with younger white males, so who does that hurt the most? Don't know.

I guess we can count Governor Martinez out as Trump's VP.

Trump really loves going into states and attacking Republican governors for some reason.

The Orange Won has thin skin.  Gov. Martinez (who is, in fairness, a bit of a squish, but does well for state that is basically owned by the federal government) supported first Bush, then Rubio, then Cruz, and now has declined to endorse the Orange Won.

This undoubtedly got the Orange Won's expensive weave in a knot and made him madder than the time Melania hid his Viagra.

You're probably right there.  With Trump's negatives among women and Hispanics he's a long shot for New Mexico regardless of whether he trashes the governor or not.

The effect of trashing Republicans doesn't stop at the state border.

Nope.

You are saying Susana Martinez is Not popular?    This is your truth - not The Truth.

Google "Susana Martinez Popularity" and get a slap in the face of reality.   According to the most recent statewide survey, Martinez earns an eye-popping 66 percent overall approval rating, including positive marks from 70 percent (!) of women.  And since nearly half of the state’s population is comprised of Hispanics, it stands to reason that the governor is faring quite well among that demographic group, too. According to the poll, Martinez is extremely popular among Republicans, and gets thumbs-ups from roughly two-thirds of independents and almost half of self-identified Democrats.
