Do you believe the Iranian tunnels were dug by hand then? Or do the Iranians posses some magical tech that surpasses any Western tunneling machines which somehow decades ago managed to tunnel through granite to create Cheyenne Mountain Complex?
Tunneling machines? Cheyenne Mountain was done by the time honored methods of drilling shot holes and tunnel rounds and blasting. It started in 1961, and was largely done by the Corps of Engineers. It had to be stabilized by rock bolts, and eventually a concrete dome because they found a fault in there.
I've drilled shot holes in granodiorite (similar hardness to Granite) when I worked on a construction crew in the Blue Ridge. The cutters on most tunneling machines, even today, are made for softer, sedimentary rock.
The Mullahs have had plenty of time to dig those tunnels the old fashioned way. Drill, blast, muck, and drill some more. It's one thing to do in virgin rock, but now it is not only fractured from the original tunneling, but from the effects of bunker busters dropped successively into the same hole, a technique designed to fracture the rock extensively. That, contrary to some belief, will NOT make for easier digging.
And they still have to contend with a chaotic, biologically toxic, and radioactive environment if and when they get there.
