Assassins and Secret Service incompetence

Those who have made an attempt on President Trump’s life have gotten way too close for comfort to succeeding.

Do you remember Kimberly Cheatle?  She resigned as director of the Secret Service after her testimony at a congressional hearing revealed her profound incompetence to protect President Trump from a would-be assassin, while she presided over a set of systemic failures that literally brought the “protected” within an inch of death — a failure that cost the life of an innocent attendee who died shielding his family from gunfire.

Cheatle’s successor is Sean M. Curran, one of those who placed himself directly in harm’s way during that attempt.  He did so when it was not clear how many more bullets were on their way toward the target.  Hero, yes, but sadly, incompetent.

Recently, the third attempt in two years failed to kill Trump, but once again, systemic failures soon became obvious.  The videotape shows an armed man with criminal intent sprinting past the outer layer of security, surprising the guards, who, thankfully, had the proper reflexes once the threat was obvious.

Reviewing that videotape, one may be amazed to see that the barrier the would-be assassin had to cross was no impediment at all.  It was a simple reception table with a metal detector off to its side.  The criminal did not even have to jump over the table.  At high speed, he was well past it and nearly at the entry door of the room in which the president was prominently seated before he was tackled, disarmed, and handcuffed.

Hooray for the Secret Service?  Not quite.  They got lucky.  This time.
