Assassins and Secret Service incompetence

Those who have made an attempt on President Trump’s life have gotten way too close for comfort to succeeding.

Robert Arvay | May 16, 2026

Do you remember Kimberly Cheatle?  She resigned as director of the Secret Service after her testimony at a congressional hearing revealed her profound incompetence to protect President Trump from a would-be assassin, while she presided over a set of systemic failures that literally brought the “protected” within an inch of death — a failure that cost the life of an innocent attendee who died shielding his family from gunfire.

Cheatle’s successor is Sean M. Curran, one of those who placed himself directly in harm’s way during that attempt.  He did so when it was not clear how many more bullets were on their way toward the target.  Hero, yes, but sadly, incompetent.

Recently, the third attempt in two years failed to kill Trump, but once again, systemic failures soon became obvious.  The videotape shows an armed man with criminal intent sprinting past the outer layer of security, surprising the guards, who, thankfully, had the proper reflexes once the threat was obvious.

Reviewing that videotape, one may be amazed to see that the barrier the would-be assassin had to cross was no impediment at all.  It was a simple reception table with a metal detector off to its side.  The criminal did not even have to jump over the table.  At high speed, he was well past it and nearly at the entry door of the room in which the president was prominently seated before he was tackled, disarmed, and handcuffed.

Hooray for the Secret Service?  Not quite.  They got lucky.  This time.

What I notice is how many USSS agents seem to be out of shape and lacking shooting skills. Some physical fitness requirements and more time on the range would be nice.

It looked to me like once the crowd was in, the agents went into 'the rush is over' mode, and effectively lost their edge.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

There is a monotony that happens with doing the same thing over and over again. Large crowd control ain't no different in that. It is generally always easy to find a flaw to exploit if you're looking for it. It may be as easy as using a side door that the cops leave open so they can come and go, rather than using the heavily protected front entry.

That complacency, undoubtedly, is the main thing to overcome in any security situation. The problem is, you don't know you're doing it until something happens... And in security, when something happens, it's really, really bad.

Which is why it helps to have fresh eyes on the situation.

That K-9 had fresh eyes (and a fresh nose), but the handler wasn't listening.

Live in  harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly, do not claim to be wiser than you are.  Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all.  If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.

There may be a little 'chub' there, but keep in mind that body armor adds an inch all around. No one looks skinny in that gear, even if they are.
