If the air campaign intensifies, maintenance, supply, and support needs intensify, too. That means more people.
Otherwise, something gets missed, and our pilots, aircrew, and even our bases and vessels may be put at greater risk.

Changing weapons platforms means more people, too. A B-52 requires between 53 and 62 man hours per flight hour, and the B-1 and B-2 require close to 100. The more gee whiz stuff you have, the more systems to maintain. BUFFs are relatively simple bomb trucks compared to the Bone and the Spirit.

Okay ... 50,000 US troops are needed on the ground for systems maintenance, not battle.   I know very little about this side of war and can only pray you're right.

Exact breakdowns for "actual combat troops" (often meaning ground combat units like Army/Marine infantry) are not publicly detailed in current reports.

When I was in Vietnam, almost sixty years ago now, for every point of the spear type (Sneaky Pete) there were at least twenty technical and logistical support people (me) there. That was then. I hate to guess how many it takes now.

That is not what that means. It means the targets in the heavily populated areas have been hit with precision bombs and the facilities out in the open can now be bombed to oblivion with less precise weapons.

A lot of support personnel are doing things all over the world which are never known or acknowledged. When people ask me which campaign were you in? The only answer is, 'all of them'. I did the stuff I did in war and in peace alike, all in support of the military. And nobody ever knew.

So yes. Support personnel are the foundation of the 11bang bang combat troops.

No, they are not, and for good reason. Every Marine a rifleman, and all that. I was just addressing the logistical needs of air units.

Satellites above can see where every launch comes from. Mobile ones can move between launches. These cannot.

IIRC, a "JDAM kit" attaches to a "dumb" bomb and makes it a guided bomb. Not knowing it Bomb IQ, I don't know whether it's Genius, Smart, or almost smarter than .

Fox News’ Jen Griffin is reporting that Kurdish forces have launched a ground offensive against Iranian regime forces in the country’s northwest, a region home to a sizable Kurdish population.

“Thousands of Iraqi Kurds have launched a ground offensive in Iran,” Griffin reported at 4:13 p.m. Eastern Time, citing an unnamed U.S. official. Barak Ravid, the senior foreign affairs correspondent, further confirmed that Iranian Kurdish forces had launched attacks within Iranian territory.

Involvement of Iraqi Kurds has been disputed as of this report. The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), the leading political party in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, has denied involvement in any ground operation or the broader US-Israel war against Iran.

Several media outlets, including CNN and Reuters, had reported that discussions between U.S. officials and Iranian Kurdish opposition groups regarding the possibility of a limited ground operation into western Iran. The discussions had reportedly been taking place over several months, though the reports have surfaced in the wake of ongoing U.S. and Israeli combat operations against Iran, which have led to retaliatory attacks throughout the region.

Sources familiar with the planning described the talks as exploratory, with focus placed on whether and how armed Kurdish groups could engage Iranian security forces in border areas.

Here’s what I’m understanding about the Kurdish ground movement reports in southwestern Iran.

So far it appears limited to small scale clashes along the border. Kurdish forces are positioning and preparing.

At the same time, U.S. and Israeli officials are running heavy information warfare, likely to confuse and stretch the heII out of the IRGC.

Kurdish sources are again dismissing claims of an offensive to regional news outlets. Reporting surrounding the ostensible offensive is currently murky and may be more of an information operation than a kinetic one.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said President Trump had a "good feeling" Iran was going to strike U.S. assets and personnel in the Middle East before moving forward with the attack on Iran over the weekend.

Leavitt made the comment when she was asked how a conversation the president had with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last week regarding the late Iranian leader's location played into Mr. Trump's thinking.

"I think it was important with respect to the timeline," Leavitt said. "But I think the president, prior to that phone call, had a good feeling that the Iranian regime was going to strike United States assets and our personnel in the region."

Leavitt insists U.S. had plans in place to evacuate Americans despite delays


As the Trump administration faces criticism from Democrats in Congress while many Americans in the Middle East are scrambling to find a way to get home, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt insisted the administration had a plan in place.

CBS News chief White House correspondent Nancy Cordes pointed out that, as recently as Tuesday night, days into the war, the State Department hotline that Americans abroad were urged to call told them "do not rely on the U.S. government for assisted departure."

Leavitt said that the automated message has since been fixed.

Cordes asked why the administration didn't focus more on having a plan in place for immediate evacuations, given how critical the president and his allies have been of the chaotic and deadly U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021.

"Again, I just laid out for you that there have been plans in place and that the State Department has been very clear to the American people, that traveling within this region, not to travel to these regions," Leavitt said. "We gave notices to leave immediately the countries where these Americans were within."

Widespread notices for Americans to leave those Middle Eastern countries didn't come until well after the U.S. attack on Iran began.

Thousands of Kurdish fighters have a launched a ground invasion in Iran, according to a US official.

The Kurdish militias, based across the border in Iraq, began the offensive in northwestern Iran on Wednesday.

President Donald Trump on Sunday night spoke with the heads of Kurdish militant groups in Iraq to discuss the situation in Iran.

The CIA was exploring plans to arm the Kurdish forces with the aim of sparking a popular uprising, CNN reported Tuesday.

The Kurdish groups are widely seen as the most well-organized faction of the fragmented Iranian opposition and are believed to have thousands of battle-hardened fighters.

Their entry into the war could pose a significant challenge to the besieged authorities in Tehran and could also risk pulling Iraq further into the conflict.

Asked about Kurdish involvement, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told reporters: 'None of our objectives are premised on the support or the arming of any particular force.

'So, what other entities may be doing, we're aware of, but our objectives aren't centered on that.'

I don't know the chronological order, but I do remember hearing Rubio's plea that people need to register at an embassy and it was important to include a phone number so that they can be reached to assist them in departing -- he even stated that large commercial planes may be used.  He was very adamant in strongly urging leaving the area and repeated a phone number that could be called for assistance.
