So tired of the hype.

Every winter my truck got a 35L backpack stuffed full of MountainHouse (among other things) Enough food to walk out if I needed to.

Didn't have to worry about much else, because winter gear, sleeping gear, tarps, tools, and etc were onboard all the time (It's a mountain truck after all). Added some spares, and counted on natural accumulation to build that inventory.

Tech tip: When you buy a new set of Carhartts, have your old ones professionally cleaned and vacuum sealed = The whole mess of em will fit under your seat. That's where mine lived, all the time. Same with my old mukluks - They just lived behind the seat in the truck. That way I always had em, and they worked as dry spares if I was in my new set.

But you should always, always, always have hard weather gear onboard. Even if you ain't planning on leaving town. If you've ever needed to walk out, you'd understand.

We ended up with Freezing rain the other day. 2 hour delay for schools in the area. City schools closed.

We have an Arctic cold snap coming ... again, not unprecedented for this time of year in my region ... still damn cold enough to burst pipes and freeze saltwater (below 17 degrees F).

For the real cold weather - Magnesium Chloride or Calcium Chloride - are required as snow/ice melter.

IMHO, Calcium Chloride works best when Hell freezes over.

Make sure to rotate any food stock in that SHTF bag... When S really DOES HTF, you don't want to survive munchin on ganky-ass 5 year old vienna sausages.

THAT was a high cost realization, right there. I PAID for that one.

Yeah... That's why it's stuffed with my normal camping food stuff - I always used it up the following summer, and bought it fresh in the fall.

It's really kinda dumb, because my kitchen box in the camper probably carries 30 days worth anyway... But that is kinda kept in catch-all fashion - I don't inventory that, so I don't KNOW what's in there. So it was always easier to fill that 35L with food for the winter.

Anyway, if it is winter, That camper would be on the truck too... If my truck survives the event (whatever that means) I will be sitting pretty. Even if it's 30 below.

It gets cold enough here, that they just don't salt the roads.
Sand at the intersections...
Vehicles last a lot longer, too.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Granola bars and pop tarts will last for quite a while.

Oh, the weather outside is frightful
But the fire, it's so delightful
And since we've no place to go
Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow!

And it doesn't show signs of stopping
And I brought me some corn for popping
The lights are turned way down low
Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow!

Granola bars and pop tarts will last for quite a while.

Flour, sugar, salt, coffee (instant will do), baking powder.
For sure, all that... Add some pemmican, jerky, and hard tack and I can go a long, long time.

Pretty much anything rice so long as it is in a mylar bag... Zatarans, Rice a Roni, and my fav is knorr brand, which used to be Lipton's. Many are ready to serve - just put the bag in a boil for a couple minutes and there ya go.

Of course, anything MountainHouse. Spam will last easy though a year... Freeze dried or canned chicken... canned beef... all of which also is available in mylar... Freeze dried veggies.

Pack er full of all that and leave off the pop tarts. Although a couple bags of fun size Snickers and Milky Way are a must-have.  happy77

I bought this four years a ago, and I use it everyday. So used to it now, I cant imagine being without it.
I am drinking rose black tea that I made with it even as I write this. Great for those freezing temps.

Used to be - Fried Spam is a considerable delicacy in the PacNW and points north. But I am kosher anymore... I wouldn't pack Spam now.

Massive 17-inch snowstorm triggers lockdown alerts in 5 US states
Story by Ally Webb • 1h

The early December storm sweeping across the United States began by dumping up to 17 inches of snow in Colorado’s Sangre de Cristo Mountains, quickly stranding travelers and turning normally clear roads into treacherous corridors of ice and blowing snow. By midweek, the National Weather Service was urging people to delay travel as snowplows struggled to keep up and visibility dropped to near zero in some mountain passes. What started as a powerful collision of Pacific moisture and cold inland air is now evolving into a broad weather system with impacts stretching from the central Rockies to New England.

Meteorologists say a strong early-winter jet stream is pulling moist air from the Pacific over a mass of colder continental air, a combination that favors heavy, prolonged snowfall. The storm is expected to linger for roughly 48 hours in many locations, with the heaviest accumulations in higher elevations of Colorado, Wyoming, and New Mexico, and later in parts of northern New England.

Snow totals in some mountain areas could reach 17 inches, accompanied by gusty winds and sharply reduced visibility. Forecasters warn that even short trips could become hazardous, particularly on routes that climb rapidly in elevation. The system’s broad circulation is also drawing in colder air behind the main front, extending icy conditions on roads and sidewalks long after the heaviest snow subsides.

Drove back from the rig last night (five below), and only had to use 4WD on the unpaved 3 miles at the rig end. The pavement wasn't completely dry and clear, but the patch ice was such that I could always keep a couple of tires on pavement. No biggie. It's winter.

It's supposed to warm up tomorrow (30s above zero), so I'll finish scraping the ice off the rest of the sidewalk and steps (what the snowthrower couldn't get), fire up the vehicles and shuffle them so I can clear the snow out around where they've been parked...

Winter fun!
