Weather hell for 42 million Americans: Snowstorm stretching 1,200 miles to dump up to 18 inches this

Looks like winter to me.  It cane early.  But it is not a one off.
So tired of the hype.

Every winter my truck got a 35L backpack stuffed full of MountainHouse (among other things) Enough food to walk out if I needed to.

Didn't have to worry about much else, because winter gear, sleeping gear, tarps, tools, and etc were onboard all the time (It's a mountain truck after all). Added some spares, and counted on natural accumulation to build that inventory.

Tech tip: When you buy a new set of Carhartts, have your old ones professionally cleaned and vacuum sealed = The whole mess of em will fit under your seat. That's where mine lived, all the time. Same with my old mukluks - They just lived behind the seat in the truck. That way I always had em, and they worked as dry spares if I was in my new set.

But you should always, always, always have hard weather gear onboard. Even if you ain't planning on leaving town. If you've ever needed to walk out, you'd understand.

I keep a SHTF set up 24/7/365 in the back of my vehicle. Food, water assorted tools.

We ended up with Freezing rain the other day. 2 hour delay for schools in the area. City schools closed.

We have an Arctic cold snap coming ... again, not unprecedented for this time of year in my region ... still damn cold enough to burst pipes and freeze saltwater (below 17 degrees F).

For the real cold weather - Magnesium Chloride or Calcium Chloride - are required as snow/ice melter. 

IMHO, Calcium Chloride works best when Hell freezes over.

I keep a SHTF set up 24/7/365 in the back of my vehicle. Food, water assorted tools.

Make sure to rotate any food stock in that SHTF bag... When S really DOES HTF, you don't want to survive munchin on ganky-ass 5 year old vienna sausages.

THAT was a high cost realization, right there. I PAID for that one.

Yeah... That's why it's stuffed with my normal camping food stuff - I always used it up the following summer, and bought it fresh in the fall.

It's really kinda dumb, because my kitchen box in the camper probably carries 30 days worth anyway... But that is kinda kept in catch-all fashion - I don't inventory that, so I don't KNOW what's in there. So it was always easier to fill that 35L with food for the winter.

 Anyway, if it is winter, That camper would be on the truck too... If my truck survives the event (whatever that means) I will be sitting pretty. Even if it's 30 below.

IMHO, Calcium Chloride works best when Hell freezes over.

It gets cold enough here, that they just don't salt the roads.

Granola bars and pop tarts will last for quite a while.

Flour, sugar, salt, coffee (instant will do), baking powder.
For sure, all that... Add some pemmican, jerky, and hard tack and I can go a long, long time.

Pretty much anything rice so long as it is in a mylar bag... Zatarans, Rice a Roni, and my fav is knorr brand, which used to be Lipton's. Many are ready to serve - just put the bag in a boil for a couple minutes and there ya go.

Of course, anything MountainHouse. Spam will last easy though a year... Freeze dried or canned chicken... canned beef... all of which also is available in mylar... Freeze dried veggies.

Pack er full of all that and leave off the pop tarts. Although a couple bags of fun size Snickers and Milky Way are a must-have.

I bought this four years a ago, and I use it everyday. So used to it now, I cant imagine being without it.
I am drinking rose black tea that I made with it even as I write this. Great for those freezing temps.

Used to be - Fried Spam is a considerable delicacy in the PacNW and points north. But I am kosher anymore... I wouldn't pack Spam now.
