We'll see what happens,  I can see Walmart and other supermarkets in certain areas needing to close because of rampant thefts and looting once SNAP benefits run out.

Walmart addresses social media rumors that it will close stores when SNAP benefits lapse

Walmart is pushing back against viral social media rumors falsely claiming the retail giant plans to close stores amid looting threats tied to a possible lapse in federal food assistance funding.

The rumors have spread across TikTok as the federal government shutdown stretches into its fifth week and threatens to disrupt federal programs, including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which provides food aid to more than 40 million Americans.

"These claims are false, and we will continue to be open for business," a Walmart spokesperson told FOX Business in an email..........

WallyWorlds revenue will take a hit without those SNAP shoppers.

As to shrinkage.... I'd double the loss prevention staff in the ghetto stores and close the swindle lanes.... aka, self checkout.

Walmart will have to increase their Security in some locations and add parking lot patrols.  Other grocers too.  More people will use curbside and delivery options.

Yup

I hate those self checkout lanes with a fiery passion.
I also despise it when they make me checkout myself and then want to see my receipt at the door before I leave.  Nope, sorry. That's when being deaf comes in handy. They say, "Ma'am, can I see your receipt, please?" and I keep walking and say, "Thank you! You have a good day, too!"

I tried curbside during COVID and it became frustrating because they didn't have many of the items that I wanted and kept texting me to select other options.  What a pain that became and I finally told them to just forget the entire order.

Not so much around here, but in the inner city I would almost be afraid of getting robbed during curbside.

Delivery seems like the better option??

Probably.  Unless one lives in a really bad neighborhood.

Love self-checkout; can't stand having to sit there watching some mostly brain-dead retard lazily sliding things past the scanner in no particular order and then stuffing everything willy-nilly into the bags that I'm forced to provide.

It's a shame that so many of them are used for self-provided five-finger discounts.

Interesting as there are stores in my area that are doing away with self check out as stores are losing $$$. I prefer someone else to check me out and bag my groceries but that's just a personal preference.

As for providing bags -- not around  here.  You are welcome to bring your own shopping bags, but for the most part plastic bags are still used and once in awhile paper bags depending on the items.

The amount of theft is unfortunate, and probably means that most of the self-checkouts will end up being done away with.

Around here, at the grocery store, one can either bring one's own bags or pay 25 cents a piece for flimsy paper bags - plastic bags are illegal now (f**king democrats).

The only exception is the Target, which provides reusable Target-branded bags made out of some sort of recycled plastic that they do not charge for.  That's handy, so I do some of the shopping I would otherwise do in the supermarket (Stop & Shop) at the Target.

I totally agree. And with full check out they carry the order to your car. I tried self-checkout. I guess I'm slow, but it was really hard to find the barcodes on a lot of items especially produce. . And heaven forbid you buy wine or beer! That involves major "assistance" from store management. Let's stop the world until a manager gets here to verify that I'm old enough. I get it, but the people behind you get testy, lolo.

I won't use self checkout if I have produce if it's sold by the weight.

Why?  I've never had a problem with weighing produce at self-checkout.

It's a PITA -- self checkout here for produce involves searching the screen for the proper item and then weighing it. Much easier to have a cashier just scan the darned item.

Unless you have certain markdowns or produce which requires looking up a product code.
