Interesting as there are stores in my area that are doing away with self check out as stores are losing $$$. I prefer someone else to check me out and bag my groceries but that's just a personal preference.
As for providing bags -- not around  here.  You are welcome to bring your own shopping bags, but for the most part plastic bags are still used and once in awhile paper bags depending on the items.
The amount of theft is unfortunate, and probably means that most of the self-checkouts will end up being done away with.
Around here, at the grocery store, one can either bring one's own bags or pay 25 cents a piece for flimsy paper bags - plastic bags are illegal now (f**king democrats).
The only exception is the Target, which provides reusable Target-branded bags made out of some sort of recycled plastic that they do not charge for.  That's handy, so I do some of the shopping I would otherwise do in the supermarket (Stop & Shop) at the Target.
