Reports: Hamas Responds to Trump; Agrees to Release All Hostages

Al Jazeera reported Friday that Hamas delivered its response to President Donald Trump’s peace plan, hours after the president gave the terror group a deadline of 6:00 p.m. ET on Sunday or else face total destruction.

Al Jazeera reported:

    The Palestinian group says that, in order to end Israel’s war on Gaza and a complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from the enclave, it is ready to release all Israeli captives – both those who are living and dead – according to the exchange plan outlined in Trump’s proposal.

    “In this context, the movement affirms its readiness to immediately enter into negotiations through the mediators to discuss the details of this agreement,” Hamas said in a statement shared on Telegram.

    It also said it agrees to hand over the administration of Gaza to an independent body of Palestinian technocrats, “based on Palestinian national consensus and Arab and Islamic support”.

The response did not, apparently, include an agreement to disarm — a core Israeli and American demand.

However, the prospect of releasing all of the hostages, if real, would create real pressure for a compromise.

It is possible that a deal could be struck on or around the second anniversary of the Hamas terror attack of October 7, 2023, that began the war. That attack also occurred on the last day of the seven days of the Jewish holiday of Sukkot (Feast of Tabernacles); this year, October 7 again coincides with Sukkot, on the first day.

Trump’s ultimatum did not specify whether Hamas needed to agree in full to all 20 points in the deal.

Hamas announces that it has submitted its response to US President Donald Trump’s proposal for ending the Gaza war, declaring that it is prepared to release all remaining hostages under the terms laid out in the plan and that it is ready to immediately enter negotiations with the mediators to discuss the details.

The group is ostensibly referring to talks that still need to be held regarding the identities of the roughly 2,000 Palestinian security prisoners and bodies of slain Gazans who would be released in exchange for the 48 hostages, 20 of whom are believed to be alive.

But the Hamas statement stipulates that the hostages will be released “with the provision of the field conditions necessary for the exchange process.”

The group says it appreciated international efforts on the matter, including the one advanced by Trump, highlighting the US proposal’s provisions ending the war, releasing Palestinian prisoners, surging aid into Gaza, rejecting the occupation of the Strip, and rejecting the displacement of Palestinians from the enclave.

It’s also not immediately clear whether the formal response submitted to the mediators is the same as the public statement, given that the latter also makes no mention of Hamas’s qualms regarding the proposal’s envisioned withdrawal of the IDF from Gaza.

An Arab diplomat told The Times of Israel that Hamas and the mediators were expected to seek amendments regarding this issue, due to displeasure with the 11th-hour changes that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu secured that slowed and limited the pull-out of Israeli troops.

IIRC Hamas agreed to release hostages long ago.  I personally don't believe that there are any hostages alive and even if so, can you imagine the horror that they have suffered and what shape they are now in.

Hamas is NEVER going to comply.  They have proven over and over and over and over again that they cannot be trusted.

Qatar frames Hamas response as 'its agreement to President Trump’s plan'

Amid reports from Israel that Donald Trump ignored objections from Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, when he decided to treat the conditional response from Hamas to his peace plan for Gaza as a yes, a Qatari government spokesman has framed the Hamas response the same way.

“The State of Qatar welcomes the announcement by Hamas of its agreement to President Trump’s plan, and its readiness to release all hostages as part of the exchange framework outlined in the plan,” the statement from Majed Al Ansari, an adviser to Qatar’s prime minister, begins.

It continues:

We also affirm our support for the statements made by the President calling for an immediate ceasefire to facilitate the safe and swift release of hostages, and to achieve rapid results that would put an end to the bloodshed of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. At the same time, the State of Qatar affirms that it has begun working with its partners in the mediation the Arab Republic of Egypt, in coordination with the United States of America, to continue discussions on the plan in order to ensure a path toward ending the war.

According to the Israeli journalist Barak Ravid, Netanyahu told Trump after the Hamas response was received, but before Trump welcomed it, that he sees it as a rejection of Trump’s plan, not an acceptance.

If Ravid’s reporting is accurate, Trump’s statement welcoming the Hamas response could be an attempt to box in the Israeli prime minister.

For decades, Netanyahu has managed to successfully resist that sort of pressure from American presidents. After his first meeting with Bill Clinton in 1996, Clinton reportedly raged to aides, “Who the bleep does he think he is? Who’s the bleep superpower here?”

Hamas said in a statement Friday it has agreed to parts of the ceasefire deal that President Trump outlined earlier this week, including a demand to release all hostages — but the group suggested other portions of the deal should be subject to negotiation.

A U.S. official told CBS News the United States views Hamas' response as positive, though there are details that still need to be hammered out, such as the decommissioning of weapons, which may begin as soon as next week.

This is true. But, I was told years ago by my hubby, whatever life throws at you, your goal is to live. We'll worry about the aftermath later. The only thing that can't be fixed is dead.

Italy already saw more than 2 million people rally on Friday across the country in a one-day general strike to support the residents of Gaza.

More than 2 million people across Italy rallied in over 100 cities on Friday for a one-day general strike over Israel’s detention of activists from the Gaza flotilla and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s perceived cautious stance on the conflict, Italy’s largest union said.

Large crowds protested across the country during the strike, blocking roads in many cities.

The CGIL, one of two unions to call the strike, said over two million people across Italy had taken to the streets in over 100 demonstrations.

CGIL head Maurizio Landini noted “the extraordinary and unprecedented participation of young people, who are calling for a future of peace.”

Up and down the country, from Turin and Trento in the north to Bari and Palermo in the south, people gathered for marches and flashmobs, blocking highways or train tracks.

The strike saw trains canceled or delayed, some schools closed, and even some prisoners downing tools.

In Florence, protesters approached the gates of the Italian national soccer team’s training center to demand its upcoming World Cup qualifier against Israel not be played because of the war against Hamas in Gaza.

At least 80,000 people marched in Rome, according to police. Organizers put the number at 300,000.

Over 80,000 people demonstrated in Milan, police told AFP, with a sea of people clapping and waving the Palestinian flag as they made their way through the streets, carrying a massive banner reading: “Free Palestine, Stop the War Machine.”

Organizers claimed 50,000 people were marching in Turin and 40,000 in Genoa, while 10,000 protesters were blocking the port of Naples.

Witkoff, negotiators en route to Cairo as Hamas sends delegation for Gaza deal talks - report

US Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are expected to arrive in Cairo for talks on the deal to end the war in Gaza, a source familiar with the negotiations reported on Saturday.

Hamas negotiators are also expected to arrive in Cairo on Saturday night, according to Saudi outlet Al Arabiya.

An Israeli delegation will arrive on Sunday or Monday.

Officials believe that there is limited time to strike a deal, hence the rush to the negotiating table. “We are heading into a dramatic week," a senior Israeli official told Israeli media outlet N12.

The deal, as originally stated by US President Donald Trump, calls for the release of all hostages, living and deceased, within 72 hours of agreement.

However, N12 reported that Israel understands that the timetable for the hostages' release could be stretched out depending on the situation on the ground in Gaza.

One Hamas official told the AFP that Egypt will host an "intra-Palestinian dialogue on Palestinian unity and the future of Gaza, including the administration of the Gaza Strip."

"We are ready to begin negotiations immediately to finalize all issues," the anonymous Hamas official added.

Al Sharq reported that Israel will reportedly exchange 250 life prisoners and more than 1,700 prisoners who were arrested after the October 7 massacre.

N12 reported that Israeli security officials have already begun making a list of the prisoners who could be released as part of the hastened negotiations. Both sides are also preparing withdrawal maps.

The Israeli delegation is reportedly trying to speed up talks on the hostages, and wants to table discussions on an IDF withdrawal from Gaza, the meaning of the full ceasefire, and the names of the prisoners set to be released.

Trump on Netanyahu moving ahead with his Gaza deal: ‘I said, Bibi, this is your chance for victory. He was fine with it. He has no choice’

US President Donald Trump spoke by phone with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday, and found the Israeli leader surprisingly willing to move ahead with Trump’s plan to end the war, the president tells Axios.

Trump also tells the outlet that Hamas supports the deal.

Trump’s advisers told him before the call that Netanyahu had reservations about the proposal, according to the news site, but Netanyahu agreed to move ahead when they spoke.

We had great receptivity for our plan — every country of the world in favor,” he tells Axios. “Bibi is in favor. Hamas went a long way — they want to do it. Now we will need to close it.”

I said, ‘Bibi, this is your chance for victory.’ He was fine with it,” Trump tells Axios. “He’s got to be fine with it. He has no choice. With me, you got to be fine.”

US President Donald Trump told Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to be “so bleep negative” in a tense phone call on Friday, Axios reports.

The conversation took place shortly after Hamas announced that it had submitted its response, in which it welcomed parts of the US proposal, while hinting at resistance regarding other sections and insisting that additional negotiations were needed to finalize the terms.

According to a US official, Netanyahu told Trump the ambivalent Hamas response was “nothing to celebrate.”

“I don’t know why you’re always so bleep negative,” responded Trump, per the official. “This is a win. Take it.”

Trump expected Hamas to reject the plan, and was pleasantly surprised by the terror group’s response, says Axios.

A US official says it was a somewhat combative conversation and that Trump was irked, but that they finally reached an agreement. “Ultimately, President Trump wants peace, and that’s what matters most. The administration is already working closely with Israel to accomplish that,” says a US official.

An Israeli official tells the outlet that Netanyahu said in private meetings on Friday that he sees Hamas’s response as a rejection of the Trump plan, and that he wanted to fight the idea that Hamas had accepted the proposal.

After Trump told Israel on Friday to stop bombing Gaza in a Truth Social post accepting Hamas’s response to the proposal, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the military to halt offensive operations in Gaza and decided to send a negotiation team to Cairo for final talks on the deal’s details.

The release of Hamas hostages and Israeli prisoners is one of the topics to be discussed as part of the negotiations between Hamas and Israel to begin in Egypt tomorrow.  The 72 hour clock for the releases should start ticking when agreement on logistics is reached.

The delays are complete b.s.    Doubtful that any are alive after all this time.  Hamas is brutal and barbaric and has no value for human life.

This is not a delay @libertybele  ...  The release of the hostages, dead and alive, has been agreed to by Hamas.  The release of 1,400 prisoners has been agreed to by Israel.  The next step for both is to finalize the logistics ----

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Saturday night in Israel that he ordered his negotiators, led by Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer, to travel to Egypt to finalize the technical details of the hostage release.’

"Our goal is to limit the negotiations to just a few days,” Netanyahu said.

Trump’s plan, therefore, puts Netanyahu in a bind like never before. On the one hand, he can hardly say no to the plan being imposed by Israel’s most important ally and cheered on by most of the world. As reported by Axios, when he told Trump that Hamas’s response is nothing to celebrate, the US President hit back, “I don’t know why you’re always so f***ing negative. This is a win. Take it.”

On the other hand, going ahead with the deal puts Netanyahu’s government at risk, and with it, his ability to continue delaying trials on multiple corruption charges in Israel, and not to forget, the protests in Israel against the proposed reform aimed to give the state full control of the Supreme Court or court decisions. An end to the war also means a public reckoning with his own failings with respect to Hamas’s October 7, 2023, terror attack.

Recall that in March, when Israel abandoned the January ceasefire with Hamas, Netanyahu blamed it all on Hamas’ refusal to release more hostages before negotiations on ending the war proceeded, something that was not part of the January agreement.

In June, Israel attacked Iran despite the ongoing negotiations between Iran and Israel’s principal ally, the US, over the future of Tehran’s nuclear programme (reportedly, a deal was close).

And most recently, the September 9 strike on Qatar, targeting Hamas negotiators, was by far the most stunning disruption by Israel. Ironically, it is this attack and the shockwaves it sent across the Arab world that arguably pushed Trump to accelerate plans for peace in Gaza.

What Netanyahu will do from here is hard to predict. He finds himself trapped between domestic political concerns and geopolitical pressure from Trump, Europe and the Arab states. A possible response, then, is that he stalls and accuses Hamas of not agreeing to the terms, and convinces Trump that he must “finish the job.” In fact, according to NPR, in order to prevent Smotrich and other far-right politicians from quitting in protest, the Trump plan may not even be brought to a vote in his cabinet.

The plan, therefore, might still fall apart, and there is enough evidence from this year alone not to be too optimistic about any plan until it has been fully implemented. What is reasonably clear is that Netanyahu would invite further global isolation for himself (he took a longer route to the US to bypass arrest in Europe), his government (Smotrich and Ben-Gvir are sanctioned and banned from entering certain countries) and his country, should the war go on.
