Cracker Barrel Stock Plummets After Controversial Rebrand

Cracker Barrel is in hot water with both Wall Street and its loyal customers after rolling out a sweeping rebrand that’s rattled investors and outraged longtime fans. On August 21, the company rolled out a new logo and modernized interior design under its “All the More” campaign.

But rather than boosting enthusiasm, the changes have sparked widespread backlash and a stunning drop in share price. The rebrand included the removal of Cracker Barrel’s beloved “Uncle Herschel” logo—an image of a man sitting on a barrel that had become a signature of the company since 1977.

In its place, the company introduced a minimalistic design: simple gold text on a plain background, stripped of its nostalgic character. Cracker Barrel also announced plans to remodel its restaurants, phasing out their signature country-store décor—complete with trinkets, dark wood, and front-porch rocking chairs—in favor of brighter, sleeker aesthetics.

The market reaction was swift and brutal. Shares plunged more than 14% at one point, wiping out nearly $200 million in market value before a modest recovery left stock prices down around 13.9% at $50.84 per share. Major outlets, including CBS and CNN, reported drops ranging from 8% to 15% depending on the time of day. Wall Street watchers were stunned.

Popular burger chain Steak N’ Shake did not hold back in criticizing the controversial rebrand decision made by one of its competitors, Cracker Barrel, which has generated widespread criticism online and led to a significant dip in the company’s stock price.

Cracker Barrel offers a wide range of traditional southern cuisine and comfort food. Inside, Cracker Barrel locations are known for their decor, which includes wooden rocking chairs on front porches, stone fireplaces, and nostalgic artifacts, evoking the feel of an old-school general store.

In recent weeks, the company has started the process of rapidly overhauling its interior design. Many of the unique artifacts and props have been removed from the dining rooms in favor of scaled down decorations limited to walls.

The company has also redesigned its tables and dining areas to become more in line with modern fast food chains, a move critics have said is cutting down on the company’s appeal. Despite the backlash, Cracker Barrel chief marketing officer Sarah Moore has defended the rebrand. “This is also centered on making our stores easier to operate,” Moore said back in May.

The backlash reached a fever pitch on Tuesday, when the company announced that it would be doing away with its iconic logo in favor of a scaled-down version. The iconic image of a man, dressed as an old school general store owner, sitting next to a barrel has been axed in favor of generic font.

Being part of the rural culture, we regularly eat at Cracker Barrel and found the food and service good at most locations until 2020 with the pandemic, which pretty much ruined it.  It's a crying shame because we really did enjoy the southern comfort food, reminiscent of what my grandma used to fix, especially for breakfast.

All the woke DEI you're seeing is almost completely attributed to Blackrock and their leverage over companies due to their massive portfolio of shareholdings in those companies.

What I don't understand is why an investment firm would deliberately crash stocks in their portfolio and lessen  their value. Goes against every rule of investing there is.

When traveling, I always prefer the good old fashioned cafe or diner to corporate fast food places.

Cracker Barrel was my safe alternative when I could not find those as it was consistent even though a franchise.

It's remarkable how such incompetent people land executive roles in for-profit organizations.  All Cracker Barrel needed was a return to passable food quality ... i.e. meat dishes made to order, and vegetables not tasting like they just came out of a can from Walmart. 

Not only should this woman be fired, but the shareholders should sue her and the Board of Directors.

The embattled CEO of Cracker Barrel has been accused by workers of slashing working hours and reducing food quality, Daily Mail can exclusively reveal, as she faces calls for her resignation over a disastrous rebrand.

The chain debuted a new logo for the first time in 48 years earlier this week, sparking outrage among customers and wiping millions off the company stock price, which shed almost $100 million in market value on Thursday.

President and CEO Julie Masino, who earns $1 million a year, has become a target for those outraged over the change.

Staff have vented over what they describe as poor management at the highest level of the company by airing their grievances on the employment review site Glass Door.

A crew member in Minnesota posted: 'To the CEO Julie Masino, stop cutting our hours.

'We are making less pay for more work when we are understaffed because you suck at bringing this dead company from its grave.

'Stop lowering your food quality. No it is NOT a good idea to force your cooks to serve bacon that is over a day old. Bacon shouldn't be saved overnight, believe it or not.'

One worker, who claims they are an Associate Manager at a branch in South Carolina, posted: 'New leadership is driving the company down.

'There is now nothing that makes Cracker Barrel any different from every other below-average restaurant chain.'

Nothing really 'new' in this. Just more pile-on negative coverage of the Bud Light process currently happening. Exactly the same scenario. Age old super-successful company hires a young bouncy smiling young female who loves all things related to LGBXYZ stuff to revitalize the brand. And she immediately erases everything about the brand which made it successful in the name of making it align with the "views of today". However, the 'modern views' of young female fully indoctrinated college graduates are a million miles away from the views of over 90% of America.

I realize it's The Babylon Bee, but the article is essentially correct.  Waffle House is a solid business model, even if they have, uh, colorful entertainment at some locations.

One big positive for Waffle House is that they cook the food in front of you.  You have eyes on the cook at all times.
