Hurricane Erin rapidly intensifies into catastrophic Category-5 monster storm: Warning for East Coast

Daily Mail
By LAUREN ACTON-TAYLOR
16 August 2025

Hurricane Erin has quickly whipped into a catastrophic Category-5 monster storm travelling west across the Atlantic as the East Coast is warned of deadly water conditions.

The storm, sustaining winds of 160mph, is not expected to hit the United States, but heavy rainfall and dangerous water conditions are due to strike.

Swells from the hurricane are expected to cause 'life-threatening surf and rip currents' on the East Coast, as well as the northern Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Hispaniola, the Turks and Caicos Islands, the Bahamas and Bermuda.

Depending on Erin's size and strength, waves could reach 30 feet or more, meteorologists warned.

'Families heading to U.S. Atlantic beaches for a late-summer vacation next week need to be extremely cautious when venturing into the surf,' AccuWeather lead hurricane expert Alex DaSilva warned.

'More than 50 people have lost their lives to rip currents and rough surf at beaches across the country so far this year, without any major hurricane nearby.'

Erin was upgraded to a Category-5 from a Category-3 storm on Friday evening. A Category-5 storm consists of winds above 157mph.

'By the middle of next week, Erin is forecast to at least double or triple in size, which will result in rough ocean conditions over the Western Atlantic,' the National Hurricane Center said.

Mentioned on another thread that this might be the best thing to happen.

A mid August Cat 5 storm lasting a week or two, and not impacting any land (likely).    This churning ought to drop the temp of the ATL, and help suppress others.

OTOH, the Gulf of America is a cauldron of heat right now, and not a whole lot of lows, or other met features to prevent a big storm.  Historically , this isn't a good trend for our parts (TX-FL)

The latest GFS run has hit the books, and it has diverged on strength and path from NHC guidance

GFS has it about 100-150 miles off the coast of Hatteras as a Cat 3 947Mb storm.  Like always, you never can really nail these things down this far out.

  • Dems-greatest existential threat to USA republic!
With the climate change kooks, every storm is the biggest ever seen, and a given season the worst due to climate change.  Then you hear someone that sounds credible say hurricanes are no worse now than they were 100 years ago.  They come in all sizes 100 years ago, and they still do.

It is all about relieving you of your money.  PERIOD!!!  Al Gore would be a billionaire many times over had he managed to get the scheme through Congress of Cap & Trade.  When that did not work out to line his pocket, he resorted to becoming a major voice for climate change.

These climate kooks are all grifters!

When I use the "WIND SPEED" button on the Ventusky weather map and then drag the cursor to the ring of Erin, the wind speed is a mere 34mph.

How can that be a CAT 5?

If hasn't changed, the NHC uses Hurricane Hunter Plant data, and then extrapolates 10-15 mph downward at the surface.

And if the store is over sea, and no plane data, they estimate based on sat data.

August 17, 2025 9:54 PM ET

A State of Emergency has been issued by the Hyde County Board of Commissioners for Ocracoke Island, North Carolina due to the expected flooding that will come from Hurricane Erin and the impacts that it will have on Highway 12. The order is effective as of Sunday at 8:00 p.m.

The board also ordered two mandatory evacuations. For visitors, they have to leave the area immediately, while residents need to begin evacuations Tuesday at 6:00 a.m.

It’s expected that Hurricane Erin will remain off the coast, however, the storm will be increasing in size and it’s anticipated that it will have impacts on the coastline of Ocracoke that will be life-threatening. Highway 12 will also be rendered impassable.

Hurricane Erin's life-threatening path revealed in latest forecast as tens of thousands of East Coast residents are evacuated

Daily Mail
By STACY LIBERATORE
18 August 2025

A State of Emergency has been declared in parts of North Carolina as Hurricane Erin approaches, bringing life-threatening surf and dangerous rip currents.

Officials in Dare County, home to more than 38,000 residents, ordered mandatory evacuations beginning at 10am ET on Monday.

Beaches along the Outer Banks could see waves reaching 20 feet starting Tuesday, the National Hurricane Center warned.

Erin is currently about 951 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, moving northwest at 13 mph. Maximum sustained winds have reached 130 mph, making it a major Category 4 hurricane.

However, it briefly reached Category 5 status on Saturday with the eye about 130 miles east-northeast of Grand Turk Island.

Richard Pasch of the NHC said: 'You´re dealing with a major hurricane. The intensity is fluctuating. It´s a dangerous hurricane in any event.'

The storm is expected to affect the Tri-State Area from Tuesday through Thursday, particularly along the Jersey Shore and Long Island's South Shore.

Coastal communities, including New York City beaches, could face rip currents, high surf with waves up to 12 feet, flooding, beach erosion, and wind gusts of 20 to 40 mph.

Life-threatening storm warnings issued as Hurricane Erin moves toward US East Coast

Daily Mail
By STACY LIBERATORE
19 August 2025

Hurricane Erin has intensified as it barrels north over the Atlantic Ocean, bringing dangerous conditions to the US East Coast over the next several days.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has issued a Storm Surge Warning for the North Carolina coastline from Cape Lookout to Duck, warning of life-threatening flooding from rising waters moving inland.

Tropical Storm Warnings are in effect from Beaufort Inlet to Duck, with conditions expected within the next 36 hours, and a Tropical Storm Watch is in place north of Duck to Cape Charles Light, Virginia.

Officials caution that the storm surge, combined with high waves, could lead to significant beach erosion, overwash and impassable roads.

Life-threatening surf and rip currents are also expected along beaches from the Bahamas to the Mid-Atlantic, including Bermuda and parts of Atlantic Canada.

Beachgoers are urged to follow local warnings, lifeguard instructions and evacuation orders if issued.

The hurricane’s size continues to grow, with hurricane-force winds extending up to 80 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds reaching as far as 230 miles.

Erin is expected to accelerate as it moves northeast into the mid-latitude westerlies by Thursday.

Hurricane Erin shifts path as millions brace for life-threatening waves

Daily Mail
By STACY LIBERATORE
20 August 2025

Hurricane Erin is about 450 miles east of North Carolina where officials have ordered evacuations

Millions of Americans are preparing for Hurricane Erin's arrival offshore as forecasters warn the storm will unleash 'large, powerful, life-threatening' waves.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) said Wednesday that Erin is now moving north-northwest, closer to the East Coast, but is expected to turn north and recurve, avoiding a direct US landfall.

However, the hurricane's proximity is creating hazardous conditions along the coast. Waves of 15 to 20 feet are expected, and heavy coastal erosion is likely in North Carolina as the storm moves slowly offshore over the next several days.

North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein declared a state of emergency Tuesday in advance of the storm, delegating powers to government officials to mobilize workers and equipment along the coast.

'To folks on the coast, now is the time to prepare,' Stein said in a post on X. 'Check your emergency kits, make sure you have emergency alerts turned on, and listen to emergency guidance in case you need to evacuate.'

Tropical storm conditions could spread into southeastern Virginia on Thursday, and strong winds and hazardous surf may affect the Mid-Atlantic, southern New England, and Atlantic Canada from Thursday through Saturday.

'Erin is a large hurricane. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 90 miles from the center, and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 265 miles,' the NHC said.

The Category 2 hurricane's winds weaken to 100mph on Tuesday, but the NHC predicts the storm could see its winds increase to 110mph as it passes North Carolina on Thursday.

New Jersey declares State of Emergency as Hurricane Erin barrels up East Coast

Daily Mail
By STACY LIBERATORE
21 August 2025

New Jersey has declared a State of Emergency as Hurricane Erin threatens the coast.

Governor Phil Murphy issued the order on Thursday, warning residents to prepare for 'life-threatening rip currents... at all ocean beaches across the state.'

'Absolutely no one should be in the water today or tomorrow. Dangerous surf and rip currents are expected over the next several days,' Murphy shared on social media.

Areas in the north have already experienced violent winds that knocked down trees and power lines.

The State of Emergency covers all 21 counties in the Garden State, which is home to more than nine million people, and will remain until 2am ET Saturday.

Erin moved away from the North Carolina coast early Thursday, but forecasters cautioned that its strong winds and dangerous swells could impact the Atlantic coastline from Virginia to Nova Scotia in the coming days.

'Over the past couple of days, we have seen the effects of Hurricane Erin along the Jersey Shore in the form of dangerous rip tides. Today and tomorrow will be no exception,' Murphy said.

The National Weather Service (NWS) said residents in coastal communities should prepare for widespread roadway flooding.

'Many roads become impassable. Some damage to vulnerable structures may begin to occur,' the NWS said in an alert.

Hurricane Erin surges north: Millions warned of threat to life from Virginia to New York

Daily Mail
By STACY LIBERATORE
21 August 2025

Hurricane Erin has shifted north, posing significant risks of destructive surf, powerful rip currents and coastal flooding along the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast shorelines.

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued coastal flood warnings on Thursday for residents across parts of Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey and Long Island, New York.

Erin is expected to generate large breaking waves of 8 to 16 feet and life-threatening rip currents along the coast through Friday evening, with High Surf Advisories and Beach Hazards Statements in effect.

Coastal flood warnings project 1 to 3 feet of inundation above ground level in low-lying areas, with the most severe impacts expected during Thursday evening's high tide.

Residents should prepare for widespread road closures, potential flooding of homes and businesses, and significant erosion of beaches and dunes, particularly in vulnerable coastal communities.

The NWS advised avoiding flooded roads and staying out of the surf due to dangerous conditions that could lead to property damage and pose risks to life.

'Take the necessary actions to protect flood-prone property. If travel is required, do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth,' the NWS said.

'The surf will be extremely dangerous for everyone, and swimming is absolutely discouraged.

Keep in mind, yes, responsible forecasters accurately did.

But, as our resident Daily Mail oversharer who posted a half-dozen scare articles in the thread has thereby demonstrated... that hasn't translated to the overall media. That hurricane led off the evening news a few nights ago, even though it didn't come close to land. There is a sensationalism problem when it comes to news coverage of the weather in this country.
