Ukrainian forces have eliminated a sabotage group from Russia’s elite Senezh Special Operations Center in the Sumy region, military correspondent Andriy Tsaplienko reported on October 16.

According to Tsaplienko, the unit—part of the 3rd Directorate of the “Senezh” Center—had been operating across the Kharkiv, Sumy, and Chernihiv regions, conducting raids against civilians and Ukrainian troops.

Russian unit’s mission ended abruptly when they were ambushed by Ukraine’s State Border Guard special unit “Dozor,” supported by fighters of the 105th Territorial Defense Brigade.

“The Ukrainian response was swift and decisive,” Tsaplienko noted. The Russian unit’s commander was eliminated in the clash, along with five other members, while eight more were wounded.

The identities and callsigns of the eliminated Russian operatives were later confirmed: “Teacher” (the commander), “Djambul,” “Varus,” “Hryha,” “Voron,” “Harley,” “Filin,” “Armen,” “Fakir,” “Hacker,” “Henry,” and “Khrust.”

Russians Start Equipping Shahed Drones with Air-Burst Warheads

The Russians have started mounting a new fragmentation–high‑explosive warhead with an air‑burst capability on Shahed (Geran) kamikaze drones.

The Telegram channel Mines and Coffee with Sandwiches reported the development.

According to the source, the enemy has recently started outfitting its drones with modernized warheads.

The warhead casing measures 300 mm in diameter and 375 mm in length. The external surface shows batch markings, the manufacturer’s identification, and a yellow line.

Preformed fragments are located in the upper section of the casing. The lower section features three filler necks and six threaded bolts for mounting an inertia‑type base fuze, model 493M.

The explosive is described as a plastisol charge – likely OLA or LP‑30T – however, the exact mass and weight of the charge are currently unknown. The author of the post estimates it at roughly 50 kilograms.

In addition, a LiDAR sensor was found in the casing, which may indicate the capability for an air‑burst detonation above the target at a predetermined altitude.

This suggests that the new warhead is designed not only for contact detonation but also to enhance the effectiveness of fragmentation‑high‑explosive damage through detonation at a predetermined altitude.

The use of such warheads may be driven by the need to target objects protected by anti-drone structures, such as nets.

Furthermore, this could be employed for strikes on areas, maximizing damage to people, buildings, vehicles, and other objects.  .  .  .

If someone invades your home, murders your family, kidnaps your children, and burns down your house, no one should expect the homeowner to “get along” with the home invader and “make a deal.”  There is only one “deal.” Good, honorable, and decent neighbors come to the aid of the homeowner, the home invader is removed, isolated, and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Not just to achieve justice in that individual instance, but also to send a clear message to all other would-be home invaders that they will never, ever be rewarded for their bad behavior. Not now. Not ever.

FRANKFURT/BRUSSELS, Oct 18 (Reuters) - Austria said on Saturday that it would agree to the European Union's latest sanctions package against Russia, in an about-face of its earlier stance and removing a key hurdle ahead of a vote early next week.

EU foreign ministers are due to convene on Monday in Luxembourg when they hope to finalise the bloc's 19th sanctions package against Moscow for its invasion of Ukraine.

Reuters reported earlier this month the passage of the package was deadlocked because Austria was demanding that the EU unfreeze some Russian assets to compensate Austria's Raiffeisen Bank International (RBIV.VI), opens new tab for penalties imposed by Russia.

But other EU governments would not go along. The package needs unanimous support from the EU's 27 member states.
"Austria supports continued pressure on Russia and will approve the 19th package of sanctions on Monday," the country's foreign ministry said in a statement.

The sanctions package includes an array of energy and financial measures, including a ban on Russian liquefied natural gas from January 1, 2027, bringing forward the date from January 1, 2028.

Slovakia has also voiced reservations about it, but four EU diplomats said the European Commission was expected to issue a letter on Monday that should address Slovakia's concerns.  .  .

That's EXACTLY right, which is why it is so troubling that so many supposed Conservatives are demanding that the Ukrainians surrender to the Russians simply because the war is too damned expensive or inconvenient.

What happened to American Exceptionalism and the U.S. being the beacon of light for the world, standing against tyranny and injustice, and promoting the ideals of freedom and liberty? I guess that's all just passe now.

The Kremlin reiterated its commitment to Russia's war demands that amount to Ukraine's full capitulation in response to US President Donald Trump's October 17 proposal for peace in Ukraine. Russian Security Council Deputy Chairperson Dmitry Medvedev responded on October 18 on his English and Russian language social media accounts to Trump's October 17 call for both Russia and Ukraine to each “claim victory” in Ukraine.

Medvedev claimed that this call is not applicable to Russia and that Russia needs a victory “with the conditions everyone knows.

Medvedev is likely referring to the Kremlin's consistent pre-war demands to install a pro-Russian puppet government in Ukraine, Ukrainian neutrality and NATO abandoning its open-door policy, and limiting the size of Ukraine's military as such that Ukraine could not defend itself against future Russian aggression.


Kremlin officials and mouthpieces broadly reacted to the October 17 meeting between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky by cautiously reiterating Kremlin informational lines that aim to divide Ukraine from Western support and justify continuing its war in Ukraine.

Russian officials expressed cautious optimism about Trump's reported decision against provisioning Ukraine with Tomahawk missiles at this time, but Medvedev hedged that US weapon deliveries will continue to Ukraine, however.

Ukraine's October 2025 strikes against an oil terminal in occupied Feodosia, Crimea, appear to have significantly degraded the terminal, and it is unclear when or if Russia will be able to repair it. Planet satellite imagery captured on October 17 and published on October 18 shows significant damage to multiple fuel tanks at the Feodosia oil terminal following Ukrainian strikes against the terminal on October 6, 7, and 13.

Russian state business outlet Gazeta dot ru reported on October 18 that a poll from online finance platform WEBBANKIR found that 74 percent of Russian drivers have “noticed” gasoline price increases since August 2025 and that 90 percent expect further increases.

A Russian social media commentator claimed on October 18 that Russian authorities continue to delay preparations to transfer the ZNPP to the Russian power grid, and that Russian shelling cuts off power to the ZNPP, which depends on the Dniprovska power line running through Ukrainian-controlled territory ... claimed that Russian authorities are currently working to connect the ZNPP to Russia's newly constructed 201-kilometer power line that will complete the full integration of the occupied ZNPP to Russia's power grid, but noted that this will reportedly take several weeks.

ISW continues to assess that Russia's eventual integration of the ZNPP into the Russian power grid will pose significant risks to nuclear security at the plant and allow Russia to seize Ukrainian energy generation assets for its own benefit.

Donald Trump’s lead negotiator has been pushing Volodymyr Zelensky to hand over the entire Donetsk region to Russia in order to end the war in Ukraine, it has emerged.

Steve Witkoff, who has met with Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, five times this year, told the Ukrainian delegation visiting the White House last Friday to surrender the territory its forces control.

It is one of the key demands made by Putin, who made clear in a phone call with Mr Trump last week that he still wants Ukraine to give up the stretch of land as a precondition for peace, The Washington Post reported.

However, the surrender of Donetsk is a red line for Ukraine, which has long refused to cede the territory, which Russia has failed to capture despite fighting since 2014.

Kyiv still holds about a quarter of Donetsk province. The land makes up part of the so-called “fortress belt”, a string of heavily defended towns that blocks Russia from making rapid westward advances towards the capital.

In a meeting at the Oval Office, Mr Witkoff, whose official title is special envoy to the Middle East, noted that most of the population in Donetsk grew up speaking Russian, two senior officials familiar with the conversation told The Washington Post.

Giant Russian gas plant suspends intake from Kazakhstan after Ukrainian drone strike

MOSCOW, Oct 19 (Reuters) - The Orenburg gas processing plant, the largest facility of its kind in the world, has been forced to suspend its intake of gas from Kazakhstan after a Ukrainian drone attack, Kazakhstan's energy ministry said on Sunday.
Orenburg regional governor Yevgeny Solntsev had said earlier on Sunday that the plant had been partially damaged and that the drone strike had caused a fire to break out at a workshop at the plant. The fire was later put out, Russian media outlet Kommersant reported, citing the operator.

Ukraine, which confirmed it hit a gas processing plant in the Orenburg region and an oil refinery in the Samara region, has stepped up its attacks on Russian refineries and other energy facilities since August to try to disrupt petrol supplies and deprive Moscow of funding.
Ukrainian military said there were explosions and fire at the site.
It is the first reported strike on the plant, which forms part of the Orenburg gas chemical complex.
The facility, operated by Gazprom, has an annual processing capacity of 45 billion cubic metres and handles gas condensate from both the Orenburg oil and gas field and Kazakhstan’s Karachaganak field................

At one point in the meeting, the US president threw Ukraine’s maps of the battlefield to one side, the official familiar with the encounter said. According to the official, Trump said he was “sick” of seeing the map of the frontline of Ukraine again and again.

“This red line, I don’t even know where this is. I’ve never been there,” Trump said, according to the official.

Russian Railways (RZD) expects a wave of layoffs due to the “difficult economic situation” and a decline in freight transportation.

RZD CEO Oleg Belozerov instructed his deputies and heads of structural departments to prepare proposals for reducing staff numbers, restructuring, and adjusting schedules, RBC reports.

A company source stated that the reason is the decrease in workload and the “difficult economic situation.” Hiring new employees will be restricted.

Earlier, in August, RZD’s management reduced the workweek amid declining freight traffic. Until the end of the year, employees of the central office and regional administrations will be required to take two unpaid days off per month.

Yakutia’s long-suppressed anger moves toward defiance

In Yakutia or the Sakha Republic, Russia’s largest republic spanning over three million square kilometers in Siberia, separatist sentiment has evolved into a movement of identity, survival, and now defiance.

Long treated as Moscow’s colony, Yakutia generates billions in diamonds, gold, and gas, yet its people remain among Russia’s poorest, living amid environmental devastation and neglect. Anger has been brewing for years, but the war in Ukraine has lit the fuse. Thousands of young Yakuts have died fighting for Russia’s ambitions, suffering 40 times more casualties than soldiers from the Moscow district, all while their homeland continues to be plundered.

In September 2025, local deputy Alexander Ivanov crossed the final line by openly discussing Yakutia’s need to separate from Russia during an interview in Türkiye. Trump’s announcement followed a phone call with Putin and on the eve of his planned White House meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

It is unclear whether Trump is aware of the 1994 Budapest Memorandum, in which Russia pledged to respect Ukraine’s territorial integrity. Putin first violated that promise in 2014 when he invaded and annexed the Crimean Peninsula, and again in 2022 with his full-scale invasion.

In response to HuffPost’s query about who suggested Budapest, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt responded, “Your mom did,” and White House communications director Steven Cheung replied: “Your mom.”

“I’m sure Trump doesn’t know and doesn’t care,” said Jim Townsend, who has worked at both the Pentagon and NATO and is now an analyst with the Center for a New American Security. “Trump likes Orban and probably thinks he’s doing him a solid. Also, Putin is an Orban friend. Most of the world would not consider Budapest neutral ground for such a meeting but I guess Trump and Putin do.”

Yakutia’s long-suppressed anger moves toward defiance

In Yakutia or the Sakha Republic, Russia’s largest republic spanning over three million square kilometers in Siberia, separatist sentiment has evolved into a movement of identity, survival, and now defiance.

Long treated as Moscow’s colony, Yakutia generates billions in diamonds, gold, and gas, yet its people remain among Russia’s poorest, living amid environmental devastation and neglect. Anger has been brewing for years, but the war in Ukraine has lit the fuse. Thousands of young Yakuts have died fighting for Russia’s ambitions, suffering 40 times more casualties than soldiers from the Moscow district, all while their homeland continues to be plundered.

In September 2025, local deputy Alexander Ivanov crossed the final line by openly discussing Yakutia’s need to separate from Russia during an interview in Türkiye. He called on Yakuts not to fear those who have occupied their land, directly challenging Moscow’s authority. His ties with pan-Turkic circles in Istanbul and support for protests in the Altai Republic have made him a symbol of the awakening.

Meanwhile, fighters from Yakutia are already taking up arms in Ukraine’s Siberian Battalion, envisioning a free Yakutia, fighting Russian forces, and inspiring those back home.

Putin will likely try to reimpose control over Hungry or take it outright back into the New Soviet Union, now that 47 has come down as a Putin Puppet by giving him Ukraine on platter.
