Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, shared photos Saturday of the damage to Camp Mystic, taken during a helicopter tour following the flood.

Buildings appeared to be either completely washed away, or reduced to rubble.

Based on that video, it went from very little flow to peak flow in about 3 minutes...

I thought the flooding we had here a few weeks ago, in which 9 died, was horrendous. This is beyond comprehension.  **nononono*

The total number of people who have lost their lives in the devastating floods has risen to 43. There are 28 adults and 15 children.

Puts this in perspective, doesn't it.

Which is why I am always looking for the exit in canyon country (but I scope that out most anyplace, just out of habit).

As noted above, there were warnings - so the leftists trying to blame this on Trump can just eat rocks and die.  (No, I didn't know we had a National Water Center at NOAA, but here we are).

The NWS National Water Center started issuing flood hazard advisories for Texas back on July 1st.

In Texas Hill Country, where flash floods are common, questions linger about lack of warnings

Kristi Noem, the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, said although she does not oversee the NWS, she said the timeline she received from them stated that alerts about flash flooding in Central Texas began at 1:18 p.m. on Thursday, July 3.

“On July 3rd at 1:18 p.m., a flood watch was issued, although it was moderate, it wasn’t to the extremes that it was, that when the system came over the area that it stalled, it was much more water that much like I think we experienced during Harvey... the same type of system that was unpredictable in the way that it reacted and the way that it stopped right here and dumped unprecedented amounts of rain that caused a flooding event like this,” Noem said.

The initial flood watch sent by NWS on Thursday predicted rain amounts of between 5 to 7 inches. Weather messaging from the office, including automated alerts delivered to mobile phones to people in threatened areas, grew in the early morning hours of Friday, urging people to move to higher ground and evacuate flood-prone areas, said Jason Runyen, a meteorologist in the National Weather Service office.

Rain in Central Texas began to fall around midnight on July 4, and, according to reports, the first flash flood warning issued by NWS was at 1:14 a.m. Friday.

The most serious warnings came around 4 a.m. when NWS issued a flash flood emergency warning of an “extremely dangerous and life-threatening situation,” urging immediate evacuations to higher ground.................

The flooding came amid concerns about staffing levels at the NWS, after the Trump administration fired hundreds of meteorologists this year as part of Elon Musk’s DOGE cuts.

Between 2 and 7 a.m., the Guadalupe River in Kerrville rose from 1 to more than 34 feet in height, according to a flood gauge in the area. The flooding reached its peak at around 6:45 a.m. in Kerrville, hours after warnings were first issued, according to the gauge..

I'm sorry if this offends anyone but anyone who lives or operates a business in the Texas hill country has seen this kind of thing happen so many times they should know by now what can happen. Going to bed and hoping for the best is patently irresponsible warnings or no warnings!
"I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.

"So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."

With that being the case, I would think that any sort of warning along that river should draw some serious attention, especially if you are responsible for the lives of children.

:yowsa: :amen: And it isn't just that river! Any stream in the area will do.

It's much the same wherever, only with different hazards.

Hurricane country, you keep an eye on things and either prepare to hunker down or batten the hatches and bug out.

Out here, if someone warns of a blizzard, you check the pantry (should already be stocked), plug the car in and make sure you have gas for the snowthrower. Don't plan on traveling (though I have, more than once, with winter gear to survive being outside for a while if it came to that).

I have lived in the hills in Virginia, and you don't screw around in the bottoms when a "toad drownder" rolls up the holler--you go to higher ground.
I always watched the sky before going into any of the tight canyons out west, and never felt comfortable in those, even if I could see a ready escape route.
And never, ever, drive into moving water if you value your life.

As it happens I was in San Antonio this past week, my phone was constantly buzzing with flash flood warnings. People claiming that the NWS didn’t let people know there was flooding imminent/happening are lying to you for political points on the backs of dead children

I’m hundreds of miles away and I started getting flash flood warnings for six different counties (including mine). One of them was Kerr County. That was on Thursday evening.

There are very few things that get me angry in politics. I try to keep things light and not take things too seriously.
But the people who are glossing over the deaths of children during an ongoing search-and-rescue operation to take baseless political shots are sick.
